Then, one afternoon she was sitting across from her manager in a translucent glass office and the words she feared most exited her superior’s mouth. How could a 34-year old with a successful corporate career, doting husband, and amazing children be one secret away from blowing up her life? In this powerful self-development book, Broken, Changed and Rearranged, Liesl reveals what happens when the worst part of life is on public display and how crisis was the bottom, she needed to find herself. Perhaps you are carrying around stories that are left untold. These carefully edited chapters in your life feel impossibly heavy. In the silence, these stories are a constant reminder you are never free. You are captive to a fear that constantly rests inside your stomach, “What happens when they know?” Are you ready to step outside the silence and set yourself free? In Broken, Changed and Rearranged, you will learn to: • Own your story so it no longer has power over you or those you love • Identify beliefs and patterns that led you to choose your destructive stories • Listen deeply to your inner voice and respect its wisdom • Align your life priorities to what you care deeply about • And MOSTLY...not allow un-important voices to shape your life

Book excerpt: The vertebrate immune system is distinctive among defense systems of multicellular organisms. In addition to nonspecific immunity, it generates a randomized array of millions of antigen receptors (immunoglobulins and T-cell receptors). A subset of these receptors are critical for binding to invading microbes or biochemicals from them to tag the microbes for elimination. Three site-directed DNA modification processes are critical to this process in vertebrates. V(D)J recombination generates the array of exons that encode the antigen binding pockets. Recent work summarized in this volume describes the dissection of this process at the biochemical level. The mechanism of the reaction is now understood in considerable detail. The proteins that catalyze many steps of the process have now been identified by biochemical and genetic recon stitution and by analysis of genetic mutants defective in V(D)J recombination. Class switch recombination is the process by which the variable domain exon of the heavy chain is changed from IgM to IgG, IgA. or IgE. Recent progress is described in the de velopment of an extrachromosomal substrate assay system. Molecular genetic analysis of the process in transgenics is defining some of the cis sequence requirements. Biochemical assays for defining enzymatic components are also described. In addition to exciting progress in V(D)J recombination and class switch recombination, one chapter describes recent pro gress in somatic hypermutation.

And “Lit Demystified Quickly” is a tongue-in-cheek poem about larger-than-life literary figures such as James Joyce, William Faulkner, and Walt Whitman./divDIV Camels Are Easy, Comedy’s Hard is a classic compendium of the wisecracks and wisdom for which Blount is renowned./divDIV/div/div

Book excerpt: Laugh-out-loud observations from “America’s foremost humorist” (Chicago Tribune). What Men Don’t Tell Women: Well, that’s just for starters. Roy Blount Jr. realized that nearly all of his writing involved things people don’t tell people: what Southerners don’t tell Northerners, what the sick don’t want to hear from the well, what no one would ever tell their mother, and what authors rarely admit to their readers. That all changes in this “honest . . . funny” collection of confessional essays about sex, friendship, marriage, male bonding, female patience, and Elvis (The Boston Globe). One Fell Soup: A deliciously funny stew of reviews, diatribes, investigations, meditations, assorted grumblings, and verse about the absurdities of American life, death, fears, and ambition. Included in these fifty-nine easy pieces: the truth (as Blount sees it) about nudism, cricket-fighting, bowling, macaroni and cheese, black holes and black socks, nuclear holocausts, the CIA, domesticated fowl, pork bellies, God, and more. The whole shebang from “one of the most clever (see sly, witty, cunning, nimble) wordsmiths cavorting in the English language” (Carl Hiaasen). Camels Are Easy, Comedy’s Hard: Flesh-eating piranha! Synchronized swimming! Rubber chickens! Edith Wharton! Crossword puzzles! All and then some in this giddy compendium of essays, celebrity profiles, silly games, and side trips. Parts sports journalism, literary criticism, travel writing, and aborted novel, tossed with a few poems and a neo-Biblical one-act play, this is an uproarious—and sometimes heartening—anthology of adventures from “one writer who never fails to please” (The Village Voice).

Book excerpt: Biology and history are often viewed as closely related disciplines, with biology informed by history, especially in its task of charting our evolutionary past. Maximizing the opportunities for cross-fertilization in these two fields requires an accurate reckoning of their commonalities and differences—precisely what this volume sets out to achieve. Specially commissioned essays by a team of recognized international researchers cover the full panoply of topics in these fields and include notable contributions on the correlativity of evolutionary and historical explanations, applying to history the latest causal-mechanical approach in the philosophy of biology, and the question of generalized laws that might pertain across the two subjects. The collection opens with a vital interrogation of general issues on explanation that apart from potentially fruitful areas of interaction (could the etiology of the causal-mechanical perspective in biology account for the historical trajectory of the Roman Empire?) this volume also seeks to chart relative certainties distinguishing explanations in biology and history. It also assesses techniques such as the use of probabilities in biological reconstruction, deployed to overcome the inevitable gaps in physical evidence on early evolution. Methodologies such as causal graphs and semantic explanation receive in-depth analysis. Contributions from a host of prominent and widely read philosophers ensure that this new volume has the stature of a major addition to the literature.

A scent of something stalks the tall, dry grass- The fragrance of the rain-I come; I pass. Acacia thorn and zigzag lightning rend And scratch their whistling way into the wind. Ant-castles silhouette the fire-swept plains Where tawny kings in limbo shake their manes. The clouds collapse; musk mixes with the breeze. Birds dart into the hard-knot of the trees. A vulture's wing is passed across the sun. Blood stirs to surly muscle on the run. The lion scans the landscape as it lies, His dignity indifferent to the flies.
