Book excerpt: Throughout the second half of the 20th century, fundamental differences in values and policy can be discerned in British-German relations. For historical, political, and economic reasons, the collective memories of both nations have retained very different identities and attitudes towards each other and towards the European continent and European integration. Yet, Britain is one of the most significant European partners for Germany and Germany is of great importance for Britains role in Europe. This book focuses on the influence of European integration on the policies of Britain and Germany towards each other. It considers British-German relations in the context of European integration in their historical dimensions since 1945. Britains ambiguous policy towards the GDR and Mrs Thatchers opposition to German unification are also discussed. In particular, the book focuses on the post-1990 relationship and examines the political, security related, economic and financial as well as the social aspects of the dynamic British-German relations in an ever more interdependent world. The influence of the US and France on both Germany and Britain and their European policies is therefore considered in detail. This book offers interesting and challenging insights into the evolution of British-German relations within the context of European integration in the post-Second World War and post-Unification era. The book argues that throughout the latter half of the twentieth century Britain and Germany can be characterised as uneasy allies. It is only since the late 1990s Britain and Germany appear to have become genuine partners in the context of European integration.
Download or read book Great Britain written by Keith Robbins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a timely exploration of national identity in Great Britain over nine hundred years of history. Our attitudes to the nation state are changing - national assemblies in Scotland and Wales and growing pressures for regional assemblies. In his vigorous new survey, Professor Robbins provides the background to these changing attitudes. He considers the development as well as the possible disintegration of the sense of "Britishness" among the inhabitants of Britain and investigates how - and why - they have preserved their own national and regional identities across several centuries of co-existence. Keith Robbins is Vice Chancellor of the University of Wales Lampeter. Among his many books, Longman has also published his highly successful study The Eclipse of a Great Power: Modern Britain 1870-1992 (Second Edition 1994). He is also General Editor of Longman's famous series ofProfiles in Power, with over 20 titles already in print and many more in preparation.
Book Synopsis Harold Wilson and Europe by : Melissa Pine
Download or read book Harold Wilson and Europe written by Melissa Pine and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NJR - BLURB IN RAW FORM The second British application to join the European Communities (EC) was made during Harold Wilson's second Labour government. It ended in failure with French President Charles de Gaulle's veto in November 1967. This book traces the development of Britain's policy towards the EC from the veto to the end of Wilson's government in June 1970. It is based upon recently released British archival resources, and begins with the puzzle of how it was possible for Edward Heath's Conservative government to open negotiations for membership just twelve days after taking office. The book suggests that Wilson's earlier diplomacy was vital for the Conservatives' successful negotiation of British entry by 1973. Despite the 1967 veto, the Wilson government continued to focus on Western Europe, to the diminution of previously important relationships with the United States, the Commonwealth and the European Free Trade Association. The book is focused on Wilson, and examines his personal role in European policy, demonstrating his control over the application, his management of cabinet, and his efforts to win over key European allies. It suggests that a key enabling factor for the pursuit of accession was the complacency of most ministers - with the exception of key foreign office ministers. On the continent, British diplomacy was crucial in creating an environment conducive to the eventual lifting of the French veto and success of the British application. It first facilitated meaningful collaboration with some EC member-states. Second, it prevented harmful developments in the Communities that might otherwise have made British accession more difficult. Wilson was crucially important to this policy and personally strove to ensure its success. Labour's defeat at the 1970 general election meant that the policy was carried to fruition by Heath and the Conservatives, but Wilson's efforts paved the way to eventual British membership.

Download or read book Euro-Politics written by Alberta Sbragia and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe 1992, the market integration of the twelve European Community (EC) member states, has attracted widespread attention as an economic project of enormous importance. But though journalists and scholars have focused much attention on the economic aspects of Europe 1992, the program's impact on the governance of the EC has been largely ignored—even though the creation of a single market is intimately linked to changes in governance. With each member state having a very different institutional structure, the variation within the EC is far greater than that found in federations such as the United States. Though this variety adds to the complexity of consensus building among the members, it allows effective representation of diverse national interests and needs, thus making the EC a very strong, competitive force. To negotiate effectively with this "new" Community, international policymakers will need a greater understanding of how the EC will operate in the wake of the Maastricht Summit. Euro-Politics examines various aspects of the institutional dynamics of the EC and offers important insight into policy making within the Community. David Cameron discusses the origin of the 1992 program and examines the role of the nation-state in the Community. Guy Peters surveys the "political" and executive institutions, while Martin Shapiro discusses the European Court of Justice and the evolution of judicial review within the Community. John Woolley examines the European Monetary System and the movement toward the "EuroFed," Gary Marks studies the importance of the Regional Funds for both the EC and selected member states, and Peter Lange discusses the Social Charter and its implications for both employers and unions. Alberta Sbragia concludes with an analysis of institutional dynamics and policymaking with the Community in light of the new questions they raise for traditional notions of governance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collected volume of essays focuses on two complementary themes: firstly, the theoretical approaches to the study of European Political Cooperation; and secondly, the empirical analysis of EPC activity. The volume does not argue one particular approach to the study of EPC, but rather presents competing, and often conflicting, theoretical perspectives. At the empirical level, a future research agenda is suggested and it is argued that EPC research should become comparative in nature.
