Unlike reviews on book-sale sites and the open Internet, many of the reviews are serious, academic works. This invaluable resource for literary and biographical research is essential for readers' advisory and collection development. It provides excerpts from, and citations to, reviews of adult and juvenile fiction and non-fiction. It also includes descriptive summaries of the books. Virtually every book has at least one substantial review excerpt, and most have at least two.
Book Synopsis The Short Writings of Nelson Algren by : Richard F. Bales
Download or read book The Short Writings of Nelson Algren written by Richard F. Bales and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nelson Algren was a renowned Chicago writer known for his social commentary and his novels like The Man with the Golden Arm and A Walk on the Wild Side. Although he continues to be remembered almost exclusively for his novels, this book aims to highlight the value and influence of his short form works. Before he died in 1981, Algren had amassed a genre-defying body of work, including short stories, articles, poems and book reviews. The present book features a comprehensive analysis and discussion of Algren's lost literature, including everything but his novels. One of the pieces covered is a masterpiece of race relations written in 1950, more than 60 years before the galvanization of the Black Lives Matter movement. Another is a scathing poem about Algren's transatlantic love affair with Simone de Beauvoir. Both items are reprinted in the book courtesy of the Algren estate. This book also includes references to Algren's works that have yet to be studied by Algren scholars.

It is a historical saga of a race's struggle for freedom and equality and their undeterred quest for a real identity. It begins with their forcible transportation from their native land of Africa to America, their incarceration as slaves in the American colonies, their emancipation from slavery, their travails and tribulations due to social segregation, political and economical deprivation and their untiring fight to be accepted as an integral component of the American mainstream society. It is a literature that records the physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and psychological expression of a people going through the process of conception, growth and maturity from a racially confined state to a self-contained state.

Book excerpt: Early math skills are crucial to children’s math and school success in the following years. Shared book reading allows different mathematical conversations to pass between parent or teacher and child. NCTM (1989) promotes the using of mathematics storybooks as a way of introducing mathematical ideas to children, as it offers a meaningful context for teaching mathematics concepts to children. Shared book reading improves children’s problem-solving skills, allows for an exchange of ideas, establishes logical, and may prompt discussion of abstract concepts. This chapter reviews how children learn mathematics and research on the use of storybooks for mathematics skill development. It concludes with examples of how explicit and implicit storybooks, in either paper or digital versions, may be used. Keywords: Storybooks, mathematics, children’s learning of mathematics, children’s development
