Book excerpt: The book of 1 Kings outlines the rise and fall of ancient Israel through the stories of fourteen kings. It is a book of great victories and devastating failures. In its pages are violence, betrayal, power, and politics. But no matter how great the accomplishments or evil the deeds, none of these kingdoms built by human kings could last. John Woodhouse walks us through this book passage by passage as it reveals how God's purpose for the kings reaches far beyond what they could accomplish in their lifetimes. Their lives are part of a greater story, bearing witness about the King of kings, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world—building and strengthening our faith as we set our eyes on the kingdom that will last forever.

Book Synopsis The David Story: A Translation with Commentary of 1 and 2 Samuel by : Robert Alter
Download or read book The David Story: A Translation with Commentary of 1 and 2 Samuel written by Robert Alter and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A masterpiece of contemporary Bible translation and commentary."—Los Angeles Times Book Review, Best Books of 1999 Acclaimed for its masterful new translation and insightful commentary, The David Story is a fresh, vivid rendition of one of the great works in Western literature. Robert Alter's brilliant translation gives us David, the beautiful, musical hero who slays Goliath and, through his struggles with Saul, advances to the kingship of Israel. But this David is also fully human: an ambitious, calculating man who navigates his life's course with a flawed moral vision. The consequences for him, his family, and his nation are tragic and bloody. Historical personage and full-blooded imagining, David is the creation of a literary artist comparable to the Shakespeare of the history plays.

Book excerpt: In this Bible speaks Today volume, John Olley shows how the two books of Kings retell the past as preached history, addressing the exilic situation of the original readers. Within this account of short-term success but ultimate failure, there are pointers of hope, of God's continuing purposes and promises. In rich and often surprising ways, the narrative in Kings is part of the history that has shaped, and will continue to shape, the faith and life of Christian believers.

Book excerpt: The Book of Kings narrates the vivid and turbulent history of Israel and its monarchs. In I Kings: Torn in Two, master educator Alex Israel uncovers the messages hidden between the lines of the biblical text and draws rich and indelible portraits of its great personalities. Revealing a narrative of political upheaval, empire building, religious and cultural struggle, national fracture, war and peace, I Kings: Torn in Two depicts the titanic clashes between king and prophet and the underlying conflicts that can split apart a society. Using traditional commentaries and modern literary techniques, the author offers a dynamic dialogue between the biblical text and its interpretations. Book Synopsis The Historical Books of the Bible: FIRST KINGS by : Jeanne Gossett Halsey
Download or read book The Historical Books of the Bible: FIRST KINGS written by Jeanne Gossett Halsey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-09-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EXCERPT: "When I read about the mighty King David, now an elderly man with poor blood circulation (see 1 Kings 1:1-3), I immediately remembered my once-robust father Don Gossett - a great man of God in his own right - in his latter years never being quite warm enough. A great warrior David had famously been, but now old age had caught up to him and he spent his time covered with blankets and sitting by braziers, with his personal nurse-assistant Abishag devoted to his comfort. The picture told of an infirm man told is unmistakable - but it should not be assumed that David was also senile. In his final years, my father's memory made not have been as sharp as it once had been, but he was still wise and filled with the Spirit of the Lord. David may have been physically feeble, but there is nothing to suggest he was past being capable of ruling as the King."
Download or read book 1 Kings written by H. L. Rossier and published by Irving Risch. This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Book of Samuel presents the establishment of the kingdom of Israel* by David; the opening of First Kings shows us this kingdom definitely established by Solomon. It should be noted that the rule of Solomon forms one Continuous whole with that of David. The death of the aged king did not cause even a momentary interruption, Solomon having sat upon the throne of his father during David's lifetime. In type, this is a unique and continuous reign which, while presenting most contrasting characteristics according to one or the other of its periods, unites both of them in an indissoluble and absolute unity. Considered in its entirety, this reign begins with the rejection of the true king of Israel (1 Sam.), is consolidated, after victory, in the midst of dissensions of the people and strife (2 Sam.), and is finally established in peace, righteousness, and glory at the beginning of the book which now occupies us. This account, as indeed the whole of the Word, directs our eyes to Christ and presents His reign in all its various phases. Rejected as Messiah, He appears again upon the scene in the last days, gradually gathers Judah and the tribes of Israel under His sceptre, extends His dominion over the nations by judgments, but also in grace, until the final establishment of His universal, millennial kingdom. Then, in peace and in righteousness He rejoices in His victory, associating His earthly people with Himself in this.
Book Synopsis The Books of Kings, Volume 1 by : Cyril J. Barber
Download or read book The Books of Kings, Volume 1 written by Cyril J. Barber and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-09-23 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a recent essay "The Unmarked Way" Harvard scholar Oscar Handlin wrote: "At some point, midway into the 20th century, Europeans and Americans discovered that they had lost all sense of direction. Formerly familiar markers along the way had guided their personal and social lives from birth to maturity to death. Now, disoriented, they no longer trust the guideposts and grope in bewilderment toward an unimagined destination...." Dr. Handlin's observation confirms the fact that history has repeated itself. One of the guideposts that could lead us through the maze of confusing theories is the Book of Kings. Without the light of history shining over our shoulders we lose our sense of direction. The admonition of the prophet Jeremiah points us back to the lighted path: He counseled the people of his day to "Ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls." Now, more so than ever before, we need the teaching of 1 and 2 Kings, and that after all is the purpose of these studies. Read them and see.
