Book excerpt: Two infonnal meetings of consultants expert in hemostatic phenomena and in atherogenesis were held in Bethesda, Maryland, in December 1975 and February 1976 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Their purpose was to discuss the current status of knowledge concerning the thrombotic process in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. It was readily agreed that thrombosis often played a major role in plaque building and in plaque complication. It was also commented, however, that the data were qualitative in nature and that quantitative infonnation was remarkably sparse. The term thromboatherogenesis was thought to be appropriate for those phenomena in which the full expression of the thrombotic process is manifest. At the same time, recent research was noted in which what appears to be an important pathway for the initiation of atherogenesis arises from the reaction of platelets with injured arterial endothelium and'Subendothelium without necessarily involving the complete classical thrombotic process. A name was not coined for this circumstance, but it was held that thromboatherogenesis was not a fully appropriate one.

Book excerpt: This text combines extensive coverage of normal structure and function of the arterial wall with detailed accounts of the changes that occur in disease. These data are presented in a comprehensive way not found elsewhere; they are essential for the proper understanding of arterial disease and for its investigation using modern methodology. Development and the factors controlling vessel form and structure are first discussed; and the normal cellular populations, functions and interactions are then considered. Particular topics, such as pulmonary hypertension, the effects of trauma on vessels, and diabetic vascular disease, are reviewed in detail. This book will be of interest to all involved in the management of vascular disease.

Despite its importance on a population basis, research into the genetics of stroke has lagged behind that of many other disorders. However, the situation is now changing. Anincreasing number of single gene disorders causing stroke are being described, and there is growing evidence that polygenic factors are important in the risk of apparently "sporadic" stroke.Stroke Genetics provides an up-to-date review of the area, suitable for clinicians treating stroke patients, and both clinical and non-clinical researchers in the field of cerebrovascular disease. The full range of monogenic stroke disorders causing cerebrovascular disease, including ischaemicstroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, are covered. For each, clinical features, diagnosis, and genetics are described. Increasing evidence suggest that genetic factors are also important for the much more common multifactorial stroke; this evidence isreviewed along with the results of genetic studies in this area. Optimal and novel strategies for investigating multifactorial stroke, including the use of intermediate phenotypes such as intima-media thickness and MRI detected small vessel disease are reviewed. The book concludes by describing apractical approach to investigating patients with stroke for underlying genetic disorders. Also included is a list of useful websites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the edited transcript of the Second Topical Colloquium based on leads developed at the original conference on the artery and the process of arteriosclerosis (the Lindau Conference of 1970). The first follow-up colloquium on "The Smooth Muscle of the Artery" was held in Heidelberg in 1973. Planning for the present one was undertaken by the editors with Dr. C. Forbes Dewey, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. The meeting itself was held June, 1976 at the Delaware Water Gap, Pennsy1vani~, under the joint sponsorship of Totts Gap Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with financial support from the American Heart Association, the Office of Naval Research, and the Smith, Kline and French Company. The objective of the series of meetings, beginning at Lindau has been to examine from an interdisciplinary and international point of view the fundamental physiologic and pathophysiologic processes pertinent to the development of arteriosclerosis. This colloquium sought to examine critically the evidence relating hemodynamic forces to atherogenesis, to reconcile disparate findings and interpretations in so far as possible; and to make a synthesis of the present state of knowledge of the dynamics of arterial flow. Grateful acknowledgement is made for the valuable assistance of Joan Martin and Helen Goodell in the entire editorial process. The editors acknowledge with thanks the secretarial assistance of Moira Martin, Colleen Nagle, Cindy Carter and Pat Ide. Special thanks are due Joy Lowe who executed the entire final manuscript.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been recognized that atherosclerosis tends to develop in certain areas of the artery. Blood flow is thus considered to play an important role in such development. However, the direct mechanisms of the influence of blood flow on atherosclerosis are controversial. Recently, a number of active studies in this field have been carried out around the world. This volume consists of the contributions to a symposium held on the subject and offers a report of latest findings.

Book excerpt: The International Workshop - Conference on Atherosclerosis was held at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada, September 1 - 3, 1975. This book does not represent in a strict sense the entire proceedings of the above Workshop - Conference, but does reflect largely the format and the essential content of the scientific sessions. Thus, each of the three Sections of the book is comprised of the summarized presentations either at the Plenary Sessions (Section I), Proffered Papers (Section II) or Workshops (Section III). Section I comprises all the presentations of the Plenary Session on September 1 and the first three presentations at the Plenary Session on the last day of the Conference (September 3). The remaining two addresses of the latter Session (Resume of Workshop - Conference and Closing Remarks) follow the Section III at the end of the book. Sections II and III are subdivided into Chapters which correspond to the individual Sessions of Proffered Papers and Workshops, respectively. To facilitate the orientation, particularly for those who attended the Workshop - Conference, a Summary Table of all Sessions of Proffered Papers designated as Chapters in this book, precedes Section II, and a similar Summary Table of Workshops, also designated as Chapters, precedes Section III. The Tables include, in addition, the names of both Chairmen of each Session. The Chairmen whose names do not appear on either Summary Table are those who chaired the two Plenary Sessions, i. e.

Book excerpt: The present volume contains the first half of the edited tran script of a six-day Conference, "Fundamental Data on Reactions of Vascular Tissue in Man," held April 19-25, 1970, in Lindau, West Germany. The remainder of the proceedings, dealing with the epide miologic, clinical and preventive aspects of arteriosclerosis, will be published in a second volume. The Conference was held under the auspices of the International Society of Cardiology, the International Cardiology Foundation and the European Atherosclerosis Group. The aim of the Conference was to achieve a synthesis of present knowledge concerning arterioscle rosis. Therefore, workers were brought together from several coun tries and from various disciplines that do not ordinarily intercom municate for free exchange of data and ideas. Six broad subject areas were introduced by single papers; three of them are included in this volume. In the discussion which followed each formal pres entation, the participants attempted to reconcile disparate data and interpretations and to reach .a clear identification of important areas of ignorance and of crucial questions for future research. The format of the proceedings does not follow precisely that of the Conference itself. The formal papers are included, somewhat ab breviated, and excerpts of the discussion have been gathered under a series of topics arranged in logical sequence. Therefore, the quoted statements do not necessarily appear in order or in the place in the program where they were made. Principal issues, syntheses and unanswered questions are interspersed among the topics as edi torial comments.

Book excerpt: Knowledge of mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of occlusive arterial dis eases is fundamental for the design of prevention and treatment. A series of studies based on in vitro investigations, the experimental animal and the human being have slowly increased our understanding of cardiovascular diseases and unveiled their secrets to us. Over the last 60 years it has been generally assumed that dietary fats and lipids and the occurrence of atherosclerosis are closely related. Yet, even if epidemiological studies clearly indicate the existence of an association between the amount of composition of dietary lipids and morbidity and mortality of cardio vascular disease, our basic knowledge on cause and effect is still hidden in a cloud of uncertainty. The present book discusses the relation between dietary lipids and arterial throm bosis, which latter process has been observed in the coronary arteries in up to 90% of subjects with acute myocardial infaction. In this volume Dr. Hornstra, who has occupied himself with thrombosis research with never-failing enthusiasm, great skill and critical approach for the last fifteen years, tries to establish possible links between lipid metabolism and thrombosis. His literature studies are comprehensive and his investigations are impressive in that they give a new dimension and a new methodology to research of lipids and thrombosis.
