Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on development of blockchain-based new-generation financial infrastructures, in which a systematic, complete theoretical framework is proposed to explore blockchain-based securities trading platform, central securities depository (CSD), securities settlement system (SSS), central counterparty (CCP), payment system (PS) and trade repository (TR). The blockchain-based new FMI has attracted much attention in the securities industry. At present, the cross-border depository receipt (DR) business faces a dilemma between efficiency and security. In this book, the author proposes a blockchain-based new DR solution, manifesting the potential for using blockchain technology in the FMI field. In addition, using Hashed Timelock Contract (HTLC) as the underlying technology in the DR scenario, specific process and operations are proposed for delivery versus payment (DvP), delivery versus delivery (DvD) or payment versus payment (PvP) and other exchange-of-value methods. This book further studies how to carry out opening positions, end-of-day settlement of margin, forced liquidation and settlement at maturity, for exchange-traded derivatives, such as futures and options, under the blockchain-based technological framework. Blockchain technology not only naturally fits into the decentralized or non-centralized characteristic of the OTC market but also can effectively address the pain points and difficulties of the OTC market. This book provides an in-depth analysis of existing specific issues in China’s bond market, regional equity markets and asset management market, among other OTC markets, and proposes relevant blockchain-based solutions. Blockchain technology does not change the public policy objectives for FMI. The blockchain-based new FMIs are still subject to compliance, safety and efficiency requirements. This book provides a comprehensive assessment of the applicability of the Principles for Financial Market Infrastructures (PFMI) to them, in particular, analyzes their legal basis, off-chain governance and system security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blockchain technology is one of the most popular technologies in the recent decade. In 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto published a paper entitled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. This paper was the starting point of this technology. As of 2017, it has been nine years since blockchain’s development. During these years, blockchain has gradually developed toward industrialization from the initial technology boom. Although cryptocurrency and virtual currency transactions represented by Bitcoin fell to the bottom from the peak period of speculation in 2014, the investment of the relevant industries of blockchain in the world still rose gradually. With the deepening commercialization, the application of blockchain has been pervasive and has involved the financial sector and many other fields other than finance. Blockchain technology has revolutionized our day-to-day lives, and mass adoption of decentralized technology is predicted to happen shortly. This book has carried out valuable research in the provision of laws, rules, and systems in financial technology to make up for the shortcomings of existing research. At the same time, the book provides a large number of cases to explain how blockchain will fall, as well as the possible legal issues in landing. Blockchain and tokenomics are legal monographs in the blockchain industry that bridge the gaps in the legal reference of current blockchain business practices. This book will enable blockchain investors, blockchain entrepreneurs, and blockchain application explorers to understand the current and future practices of blockchain applications in a more transparent, more intuitive, and more comprehensive way by knowing the existing legal oversight and the future possibilities under the supervision of the work of blockchain.

Book excerpt: While creating new forms (Shari'ah-compliant standards) to operationalize Islamic values and ethics into the current conventional economic system and banking products is crucial to sustain the Islamic economy as it is today, we also need to develop new strategies to cope with the next economic evolution. The digital revolution in financial services is under way, and digital disruption has the potential to shrink the role and relevance of today’s banks, while simultaneously creating better, faster, cheaper services that will be an essential part of everyday life. This forward-looking book discusses the crucial innovation, structural and institutional development for financial technologies (fintech) in Islamic finance. The authors explain concepts in fintech and blockchain technology and follow through with their applications, challenges and evolving nature. The book provides insights into technology which will enable and enhance actual prescribed Islamic behaviors in modern economic transactions. Case studies highlight how to cope with modern transactional behavior with the advent of global online/mobile markets, shorter attention spans, and impersonal trade exchange.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excessive costs, cumbersome processes, disincentives and what's more: all manner of isolated, self-serving sector solutions. A financial system with methods and processes from yesteryear shapes our banking. Indeed, our entire life and society—especially the state and administrative bodies—are based on such archaic processes. In addition, billions of people worldwide are excluded from the financial system as they are not even in possession of a bank account. Banks, currencies, payment methods and administrative transactions are, on the whole, not sustainable. They are responding neither to the needs of many customers/citizens, nor to the challenges of the times. Politically and socially, we are drifting about aimlessly, lacking control and efficiency. Financial expert and entrepreneur Yasin Sebastian Qureshi—at age 29 the youngest person ever licensed to run a European bank—describes groundbreaking solutions that have long been in existence: digitalisation and its offspring the Internet, mobile phones and blockchain which are actively determining progressive developments, and whose most radical embodiment so far has been the rise of Bitcoin an other cryptocurrencies. The revolutionary thing about blockchain, however, is not the mere payment process, but the underlying technology, the more efficient processes and, in particular, its decentralised character and interconnectedness. Together with Benjamin Bilski (Forbes "30 under 30"), Qureshi outlines the future of finance and all the relevant administrative processes in business and state, even entire states, on the basis of such blockchains. The authors also dissect the history, meaning and nature of money; it has always been in a state of transformation—but now is in one of complete upheaval. The two also shed light on the social, economic and political consequences of these mutations. But what will happen if everything is organised into blockchains? The answer is certainly not one that should be feared. The new foundations of our daily and working existence are unleashing forces that have so far been pointlessly and inefficiently tied up in technocratic working environments. Following on from, and leaving behind, the Industrial Revolution, a new revolution is now on the rise. Starting in the financial system, it will turn everything there on its head and qucikly expand to other areas. Blockchain is restoring time and its potential to all us—which we can use for other, better and more creative things. Cash, however, is likely to disappear in the medium term—as well as banks, at least as we know them today..

Book excerpt: This book highlights the design, use and structure of blockchain systems and decentralized ledger technologies (B/DLT) for use in the construction industry. Construction remains a fragmented change-resistant industry with chronic problems of underproductivity and a very low digitization factor compared to other fields. In parallel, the convergence, embedding and coordination of digital technologies in the physical world provides a unique opportunity for the construction industry to leap ahead and adopt fourth industrial revolution technologies. Within this context, B/DLT are an excellent fit for the digitization of the construction industry. B/DLT are effective in this as they organize and align digital and physical supply chains, produce stigmergic coordination out of decentralization, enable the governance of complex projects for multiple stakeholders, while enabling the creation of a new class of business models and legal instruments for construction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive pioneering blueprint covering the what, why and how of the blockchain. Blockchains are new technology layers that rewire the Internet and threaten to side-step older legacy constructs and centrally served businesses. At its core, a blockchain injects trust into the network, cutting off some intermediaries from serving that function and creatively disrupting how they operate. Metaphorically, blockchains are the ultimate non-stop computers. Once launched, they never go down, and offer an incredible amount of resiliency, making them dependable and attractive for running a new generation of decentralized services and software applications. The Business Blockchain charts new territory in advancing our understanding of the blockchain by unpacking its elements like no other before. William Mougayar anticipates a future that consists of thousands, if not millions of blockchains that will enable not only frictionless value exchange, but also a new flow of value, redefining roles, relationships, power and governance. In this book, Mougayar makes two other strategic assertions. First, the blockchain has polymorphic characteristics; its application will result in a multiplicity of effects. Second, we shouldn’t ask ourselves what problems the blockchain solves, because that gives us a narrow view on its potential. Rather, we should imagine new opportunities, and tackle even more ambitious problems that cross organizational, regulatory and mental boundaries. Drawing on 34 years of technology industry experience as an executive, analyst, consultant, entrepreneur, startup mentor, author, blogger, educator, thought leader and investor, William Mougayar describes a future that is influenced by fundamental shifts brought by blockchain technology as the catalyst for change. William Mougayar has been described as the most sophisticated blockchain business thinker. He is a blockchain industry insider whose work has already shaped and influenced the understanding of blockchain for people around the world, via his generous blogging and rigorous research insights. He is a direct participant in the crypto-technology market, working alongside startups, entrepreneurs, pioneers, leaders, innovators, creators, enterprise executives and practitioners; in addition to being an investor, advisor, and board member in some of the leading organizations in this space, such as the Ethereum Foundation, OpenBazaar and Coin Center. Just as the Internet created new possibilities that we didn’t foresee in its early years, the blockchain will give rise to new business models and ideas that may still be invisible. Following an engaging Foreword by Vitalik Buterin, this book is organized along these 7 chapters: 1. What is the Blockchain? 2. How Blockchain Trust Infiltrates 3. Obstacles, Challenges & Mental Blocks 4. Blockchain in Financial Services 5. Lighthouse Industries & New Intermediaries 6. Implementing Blockchain Technology 7. Decentralization as the Way Forward The Business Blockchain is an invitation for technologists to better understand the business potential of the blockchain, and for business minded people to grasp the many facets of blockchain technology. This book teaches you how to think about the blockchain.
