Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following many reports that were published in the last two decades on correlations of multiphase structures of the surface of materials with their antithrombogenicity or biocompatibility a research project ''Design of Multiphase Biomedical Materials'' was carried out in Japan between 1982 and 1986. The objective of this research project was to elucidate various aspects of biomedical behaviour of multiphase systems at the interface with living bodies at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels. Multiphase materials studied cover polymers having microphase-separated structures, hydrogels, immobilized enzymes (or cells), ceramics and metallic materials. The research project was carried out by the following subgroups: -- Multiphase biomedical materials with microdomain structures -- Multiphase biomedical materials containing liquid components -- Hybrid-type multiphase biomedical materials with biological components -- Inorganic and metallic multiphase biomedical materials -- Methods for analysis and evaluation of multiphase biomedical materials This book contains the results of the research project in an edited form and aims to provoke a better understanding about various aspects of cell--material interactions in which the multiphase systems play a crucial role.

Book excerpt: Despite the recent advances in medical treatment, patients suffering from wounds such as burns or receiving surgical implants are still in great danger of infection. This has called attention to the need for better understanding of infections at the molecular level. Scientists from various disciplines summarize our knowledge today and investigate how methods to avoid wound and biomaterial-associated infections can be developed. These methods include new antibiotics, surgical strategies to prevent infection, and ways to stimulate the immune system and the tissue healing process. Specific topics include: the definition of microbial cell surface determinants important for adhesion to graft; the definition of extracellular bacterial enzymes and toxins involved in tissue breakdown and the local spread of infection; the prevention of the systemic spreading of infection with immunoglobulins and antibiotics; and the problem of multiple antibiotic resistance in most versatile pathogens.

Book excerpt: This Research Topic is Volume II of the article collection, Cells, Biomaterials, and Biophysical Stimuli for Bone, Cartilage, and Muscle Regeneration Over the last few years, a variety of tissue engineering strategies have been developed to improve the regeneration of bone, cartilage, and skeletal muscle. Numerous studies have proven that physical factors (external mechanical forces, and biomaterials’ features), as well as biochemical factors, may induce cells to reprogram their functions and dynamically adapt to the cellular microenvironment conditions. The advances in understanding the role of biophysical cues in the stem cells microenvironment point out the importance of their application in biomedicine and biotechnology to drive and modulate cell behavior for therapeutic purposes. In this context, many efforts are dedicated to design different strategies to engineer the physical aspects of the natural cellular microenvironment. The development of these technologies may be useful for identifying and studying the physical factors and help to clarify their downstream mechanisms to control cell behavior. This Research Topic will promote an overview of recent advances and cutting-edge approaches based on primary cells, stem cells, extracellular vesicles (EVs), biomaterial scaffolds, bioreactors, biophysical stimuli (e.g., mechanical forces, electromagnetic waves), and biochemical cues. All research involving one or more of the aforementioned cells and methods is welcome to elucidate new basic-research findings (e.g., molecular insights, biochemical pathways toward regeneration) and possible new clinical strategies (e.g., bioreactors for cell factories). An interdisciplinary design (e.g., biology/biochemistry plus bioengineering) is very welcome.

Biomedical engineers and neuroscientists around the world are working to improve the design and performance of existing devices and to develop novel devices for arti?cial vision, arti?cial limbs, and brain-machine interfaces. This book, Implantable Neural Prostheses 2: Techniques and Engineering Approaches, is part two of a two-volume sequence that describes state-of-the-art advances in techniques associated with implantable neural prosthetic devices. The techniques covered include biocompatibility and biostability, hermetic packaging, electrochemical techniques for neural stimulation applications, novel electrode materials and testing, thin-?lm ?exible microelectrode arrays, in situ char- terization of microelectrode arrays, chip-size thin-?lm device encapsulation, microchip-embedded capacitors and microelectronics for recording, stimulation, and wireless telemetry. The design process in the development of medical devices is also discussed. Advances in biomedical engineering, microfabrication technology, and neu- science have led to improved medical-device designs and novel functions. However, many challenges remain. This book focuses on the engineering approaches, R&D advances, and technical challenges of medical implants from an engineering p- spective. We are grateful to leading researchers from academic institutes, national laboratories, as well as design engineers and professionals from the medical device industry who have contributed to the book. Part one of this series covers designs of implantable neural prosthetic devices and their clinical applications.
