Book excerpt: The book presents selected methods for accelerating image retrieval and classification in large collections of images using what are referred to as ‘hand-crafted features.’ It introduces readers to novel rapid image description methods based on local and global features, as well as several techniques for comparing images. Developing content-based image comparison, retrieval and classification methods that simulate human visual perception is an arduous and complex process. The book’s main focus is on the application of these methods in a relational database context. The methods presented are suitable for both general-type and medical images. Offering a valuable textbook for upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level courses on computer science or engineering, as well as a guide for computer vision researchers, the book focuses on techniques that work under real-world large-dataset conditions.

Book excerpt: Foundations of Computational Intelligence Volume 5: Function Approximation and Classification Approximation theory is that area of analysis which is concerned with the ability to approximate functions by simpler and more easily calculated functions. It is an area which, like many other fields of analysis, has its primary roots in the mat- matics. The need for function approximation and classification arises in many branches of applied mathematics, computer science and data mining in particular. This edited volume comprises of 14 chapters, including several overview Ch- ters, which provides an up-to-date and state-of-the art research covering the theory and algorithms of function approximation and classification. Besides research ar- cles and expository papers on theory and algorithms of function approximation and classification, papers on numerical experiments and real world applications were also encouraged. The Volume is divided into 2 parts: Part-I: Function Approximation and Classification – Theoretical Foundations Part-II: Function Approximation and Classification – Success Stories and Real World Applications Part I on Function Approximation and Classification – Theoretical Foundations contains six chapters that describe several approaches Feature Selection, the use Decomposition of Correlation Integral, Some Issues on Extensions of Information and Dynamic Information System and a Probabilistic Approach to the Evaluation and Combination of Preferences Chapter 1 “Feature Selection for Partial Least Square Based Dimension Red- tion” by Li and Zeng investigate a systematic feature reduction framework by combing dimension reduction with feature selection. To evaluate the proposed framework authors used four typical data sets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is with greatpleasure that we present the proceedings of the 4th International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC 2008) in Las Vegas, Nevada. ISVC o?ers a common umbrella for the four main areas of visual computing including vision, graphics, visualization, and virtual reality. Its goal is to provide a forum for researchers, scientists, engineers and practitioners throughout the world to present their latest research ?ndings, ideas, developments and applications in the broader area of visual computing. This year,ISVC grew signi?cantly; the programconsisted of 15 oralsessions, 1 poster session, 8 special tracks, and 6 keynote presentations. The response to the call for papers was very strong; we received over 340 submissions for the main symposium from which we accepted 102 papers for oral presentation and 70 papers for poster presentation. Special track papers were solicited separately through the Organizing and Program Committees of each track. A total of 56 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 8 papers for poster presentation in the special tracks. All papers were reviewed with an emphasis on potential to contribute to the state of the art in the ?eld. Selection criteria included accuracy and originality of ideas, clarity and signi?cance of results, and presentation quality. The review process was quite rigorous, involving two to three independent blind reviews followed by several days of discussion. During the discussion period we tried to correct anomalies and errors that might have existed in the initial reviews.

This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 893 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image-guided therapy (IGT) uses imaging to improve the localization and targeting of diseased tissue and to monitor and control treatments. During the past decade, image-guided surgeries and image-guided minimally invasive interventions have emerged as advances that can be used in place of traditional invasive approaches. Advanced imaging technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET) entered into operating rooms and interventional suites to complement already-available routine imaging devices like X-ray and ultrasound. At the same time, navigational tools, computer-assisted surgery devices, and image-guided robots also became part of the revolution in interventional radiology suites and the operating room. Intraoperative Imaging and Image-Guided Therapy explores the fundamental, technical, and clinical aspects of state-of the-art image-guided therapies. It presents the basic concepts of image guidance, the technologies involved in therapy delivery, and the special requirements for the design and construction of image-guided operating rooms and interventional suites. It also covers future developments such as molecular imaging-guided surgeries and novel innovative therapies like MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery. IGT is a multidisciplinary and multimodality field in which teams of physicians, physicists, engineers, and computer scientists collaborate in performing these interventions, an approach that is reflected in the organization of the book. Contributing authors include members of the National Center of Image-Guided Therapy program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and international leaders in the field of IGT. The book includes coverage of these topics: - Imaging methods, guidance technologies, and the therapy delivery systems currently used or in development. - Clinical applications for IGT in various specialties such as neurosurgery, ear-nose-and-throat surgery, cardiovascular surgery, endoscopies, and orthopedic procedures. - Review and comparison of the clinical uses for IGT with conventional methods in terms of invasiveness, effectiveness, and outcome. - Requirements for the design and construction of image-guided operating rooms and interventional suites.

This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various applications in the field of pulmonary image analysis require a registration of CT images of the lung. For example, a registration-based estimation of the breathing motion is employed to increase the accuracy of dose distribution in radiotherapy. Alexander Schmidt-Richberg develops methods to explicitly model morphological and physiological knowledge about respiration in algorithms for the registration of thoracic CT images. The author focusses on two lung-specific issues: on the one hand, the alignment of the interlobular fissures and on the other hand, the estimation of sliding motion at the lung boundaries. He shows that by explicitly considering these aspects based on a segmentation of the respective structure, registration accuracy can be significantly improved.
