Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world has become digital and technological advances have multiplied circuits with access to data, their processing and their diffusion. New technologies have now reached a certain maturity. Data are available to everyone, anywhere on the planet. The number of Internet users in 2014 was 2.9 billion or 41% of the world population. The need for knowledge is becoming apparent in order to understand this multitude of data. We must educate, inform and train the masses. The development of related technologies, such as the advent of the Internet, social networks, "cloud-computing" (digital factories), has increased the available volumes of data. Currently, each individual creates, consumes, uses digital information: more than 3.4 million e-mails are sent worldwide every second, or 107,000 billion annually with 14,600 e-mails per year per person, but more than 70% are spam. Billions of pieces of content are shared on social networks such as Facebook, more than 2.46 million every minute. We spend more than 4.8 hours a day on the Internet using a computer, and 2.1 hours using a mobile. Data, this new ethereal manna from heaven, is produced in real time. It comes in a continuous stream from a multitude of sources which are generally heterogeneous. This accumulation of data of all types (audio, video, files, photos, etc.) generates new activities, the aim of which is to analyze this enormous mass of information. It is then necessary to adapt and try new approaches, new methods, new knowledge and new ways of working, resulting in new properties and new challenges since SEO logic must be created and implemented. At company level, this mass of data is difficult to manage. Its interpretation is primarily a challenge. This impacts those who are there to "manipulate" the mass and requires a specific infrastructure for creation, storage, processing, analysis and recovery. The biggest challenge lies in "the valuing of data" available in quantity, diversity and access speed.

Then, it focuses on the use of techniques and tools based on artificial intelligence (AI) to solve the challenges related to this problem. A global diagram presenting the general principle of these techniques is presented. Then, these techniques are compared according to a set of criteria in order to show their advantages and disadvantages with respect to the conditions and constraints of intelligent energy management applications in the context of energy transition. Several examples are used throughout the white paper to illustrate the concepts and methods presented. An intelligent electrical network (smart grid—SG) includes heterogeneous and distributed electricity production, transmission, distribution and consumption components. It is the next generation of electricity network able to manage electricity demand (consumption/production/distribution) in a sustainable, reliable and economical way taking into account the penetration of renewable energies (solar, wind, etc.). Therefore, a (SG) smart grid also includes an intelligent layer that analyzes the data provided by consumers as well as that collected from the production side in order to optimize consumption and production according to weather conditions, the profile and habits of the consumer. In addition, this system can improve the use of green energy through renewable energy penetration and demand response.

Book excerpt: Thingalytics by Dr. John Bates is the most powerful book written to date about the Internet of Things (IoT), showing businesses how to take advantage of the fast Big Data that flows from the digital planet. Thingalytics, a composite of "Things" and "Analytics," shows organizations how to use real-time analytics and algorithms to seize the opportunities that flow from IoT while simultaneously minimizing threats. The Internet of Things is changing the world. As each device--from tractors to refrigerators to ships--is digitized and connected to the Internet it presents a unique opportunity for innovative businesses to learn from, and take advantage of, the digital data it creates. Illustrated by real-life case studies from global, visionary organizations such as Coca-Cola, Greyhound Bus and Medtronic, Thingalytics highlights how the alchemy of real-time analytics and smart algorithms can help turn fast Big Data into actionable gold nuggets for any business, anywhere.Digital disruption to traditional "bricks-and-mortar" businesses is happening now. Organizations must transform themselves using digital technologies. Time does not stand still in this brave, new digital world. "Digital Darwinism is unkind to those who wait," says R "Ray" Wang, who has written the Forward to Thingalytics. Using real stories from some of the most tech-savvy retailers, banks, transportation and soft drink providers, Thingalytics delves into the world of analytics and algorithms to show the reader how to seize the opportunities buried within IoT. John Bates personally interviewed each of the people featured in this book. His deep knowledge of their vision, their businesses and their goals gives him the insight and the gravitas to explain how each organization is conquering the digital world. Pulling from exciting examples of real-life innovation and invention, John makes IoT come alive; from the exotic shops of Istanbul, Turkey, to tractors in a field in Iowa or a hospital operating room in Florida, Thingalytics depicts how IoT can make our lives happier, easier, more productive and even safer. Winners in the IoT race will not only profit but could--just possibly--avert disaster.
