Book Synopsis The Alexandreis by : Walter Chatillon
Download or read book The Alexandreis written by Walter Chatillon and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2006-10-16 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter of Châtillon’s Latin epic on the life of Alexander the Great was a twelfth- and thirteenth-century “best-seller:” scribes produced over two hundred manuscripts. The poem follows Alexander from his first successes in Asia Minor, through his conquest of Persia and India, to his progressive moral degeneration and his poisoning by a disaffected lieutenant. The Alexandreis exemplifies twelfth-century discourses of world domination and the exoticism of the East. But at the same time it calls such dreams of mastery into question, repeatedly undercutting as it does Alexander’s claims to heroism and virtue and by extension, similar claims by the great men of Walter’s own generation. This extraordinarily layered and subtle poem stands as a high-water mark of the medieval tradition of Latin narrative literature. Along with David Townsend’s revised translation, this edition provides a rich selection of historical documents, including other writings by Walter of Châtillon, excerpts from other medieval Latin epics, and contemporary accounts of the foreign and “exotic.”

Book Synopsis Everything Explained That Is Explainable by : Denis Boyles
Download or read book Everything Explained That Is Explainable written by Denis Boyles and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything Explained That Is Explainable is the audacious, utterly improbable story of the publication of the Eleventh Edition of the legendary Encyclopædia Britannica. It is the tale of a young American entrepreneur who rescued a dying publication with the help of a floundering newspaper, and in so doing produced a series of books that forever changed the face of publishing. Thanks to the efforts of 1,500 contributors, among them a young staff of university graduates as well as some of the most distinguished names of the day, the Eleventh Edition combined scholarship and readability in a way no previous encyclopedia had (or ever has again). Denis Boyles’s work of cultural history pulls back the curtain on the 44-million-word testament to the age of reason that has profoundly shaped the way we see the world.
Download or read book Chicago written by A. J. Liebling and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Chicagoans rose in protest over A. J. Liebling’s tongue-in-cheek tour of their fair city in 1952. Liebling found much to admire in the Windy City’s people and culture—its colorful language, its political sophistication, its sense of its own history and specialness. But Liebling offended that city’s image of itself when he discussed its entertainments, its built landscapes, and its mental isolation from the world’s affairs. Liebling, a writer and editor for the New Yorker, lived in Chicago for nearly a year. While he found a home among its colorful inhabitants, he couldn’t help comparing Chicago with some other cities he had seen and loved, notably Paris, London, and especially New York. His magazine columns brought down on him a storm of protests and denials from Chicago’s defenders, and he gently and humorously answers their charges and acknowledges his errors in a foreword written especially for the book edition. Liebling describes the restaurants, saloons, and striptease joints; the newspapers, cocktail parties, and political wards; the university; and the defining event in Chicago’s mythic past, the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre. Illustrated by Steinberg, Chicago is a loving, if chiding, portrait of a great American metropolis. “Good entertainment. The book is attractively designed, the illustrations are first-rate and Mr. Liebling can write.”—New York Times “Mr. Liebling’s entertaining book can be highly recommended.”—New York Herald Tribune “He has shown his readers in his lively, sardonic style exactly the split-personality city that he feels Chicago to be.”—San Francisco Chronicle

Download or read book @earth written by Peter Kennard and published by Tate. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains no words: instead it tells its story in the universal language of photomontage, long the favoured medium of radical artists. The author is one such, whose work has consistently questioned power structures and injustice, from his anti-nuclear works of the 1980s to his powerful works in response to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This photo-essay in seven chapters, combining new works, made together with Tarek Salhany, with iconic images from throughout the author's 40-year career. It makes a powerful statement about the impending eco-crisis, the arms race and the injustices of the power structures dominating today's world.

Book Synopsis Nineteen Eighty-Four by : George Orwell
Download or read book Nineteen Eighty-Four written by George Orwell and published by epubli. This book was released on 2021-01-09 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Novel", often published as "1984", is a dystopian social science fiction novel by English novelist George Orwell. It was published on 8 June 1949 by Secker & Warburg as Orwell's ninth and final book completed in his lifetime. Thematically, "Nineteen Eighty-Four" centres on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of persons and behaviours within society. Orwell, himself a democratic socialist, modelled the authoritarian government in the novel after Stalinist Russia. More broadly, the novel examines the role of truth and facts within politics and the ways in which they are manipulated. The story takes place in an imagined future, the year 1984, when much of the world has fallen victim to perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, historical negationism, and propaganda. Great Britain, known as Airstrip One, has become a province of a totalitarian superstate named Oceania that is ruled by the Party who employ the Thought Police to persecute individuality and independent thinking. Big Brother, the leader of the Party, enjoys an intense cult of personality despite the fact that he may not even exist. The protagonist, Winston Smith, is a diligent and skillful rank-and-file worker and Outer Party member who secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion. He enters into a forbidden relationship with a colleague, Julia, and starts to remember what life was like before the Party came to power.
