Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As scientific analysis of testable hypotheses has replaced the speculative approach to study of bone disease in recent and fossil amphibians and reptiles, the field has advanced from simply reporting observations to analyzing their implications. This process is predicated upon a reproducible data base which explains/diagnoses the nature of bony alterations and a secure review of the literature. Thereby hangs the rub. The herpetological literature are difficult to access (let alone read) and are scattered through many prominent and eclectic journals and in the lay literature. While older diagnoses often have not stood the test of time, the clarity of report descriptions usually allows confident identification of the underlying pathology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their abundance in many parts of North America, salamanders have generally been neglected by all but a few specialists. In this book—first published in 1943—Sherman C. Bishop discusses in a lively but authoritative manner the 126 species and subspecies of salamanders that are known to exist in the United States, Canada, and Baja California. Group by group, Bishop describes salamanders in accounts that give the common and technical names, type of locality, range, habitat, size, anatomical characteristics, color, breeding habits, and relationships—all in a uniform arrangement that makes the handbook especially convenient for studying both living animals and laboratory specimens. His brief introduction surveys the relationships and general habits of salamanders and gives information on collecting and preserving them. In his foreword, Edmund D. Brodie, Jr., a specialist on salamanders, updates the taxonomy of the group.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cunner, Tautogolabrus adspersus (Walbaum), also known as the chogset or bergall, is commonly found around wharves and docks and on rocky bottoms along the northeastern coast of North America. It is distributed from Newfoundland southward to the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, with a major center of abundance in the Massachusetts Bay area. In these northern waters, cunners are most numerous in shallow inshore areas, although they are frequently taken near wrecks and shoals up to 30 miles at sea. There is little evidence in support of seasonal migration patterns and individuals remain near their areas during their formative years. At one time, the cunner was a favorite fish of New England anglers. During the 1880's between 200,000 and 300,000 pounds of cunner were taken in the New England commercial harvest. However, since the turn of the century, commercial catches have been negligible because of poor demand.

Book excerpt: The fourth edition of the textbook Herpetology covers the basic biology of amphibians and reptiles, with updates in nearly every conceptual area. Not only does it serve as a solid foundation for modern herpetology courses, but it is also relevant to courses in ecology, behavior, evolution, systematics, and morphology. Examples taken from amphibians and reptiles throughout the world make this book a useful herpetology textbook in several countries. Naturalists, amateur herpetologists, herpetoculturists, zoo professionals, and many others will find this book readable and full of relevant natural history and distributional information. Amphibians and reptiles have assumed a central role in research because of the diversity of ecological, physiological, morphological, behavioral, and evolutionary patterns they exhibit. This fully revised edition brings the latest research to the reader, ranging over topics in evolution, reproduction, behavior and more, allowing students and professionals to keep current with a quickly moving field. - Heavily revised and updated with discussion of squamate (lizard and snake) taxonomy and new content reflected in current literature - Includes increased focus on conservation biology in herpetology while retaining solid content on organismal biology of reptiles and amphibians - Presents new photos included from authors' extensive library
