This collection explores what may be called the idea of India in ancient times. Its undeclared objective is to identify key concepts which show early Indian civilization as distinct and differently oriented from other formations. The essays focus on ancient Indian texts within a variety of genres. They identify certain key terms—such as janapada, desa, varṇa, dharma, bhāva—in their empirical contexts to suggest that neither the ideas embedded in these terms nor the idea of Bharatavarsha as a whole are “given entities,” but that they evolved historically. Professor Chattopadhyaya examines these texts to unveil historical processes. Without denying comparative history, he stresses that the internal dynamics of a society are best decoded via its own texts. His approach bears very effectively on understanding ongoing interactions between India’s “Great Tradition” and “Little Traditions.” As a whole, this book is critical of the notion of overarching Indian unity in the ancient period. It punctures the retrospective thrust of hegemonic nationalism as an ideology that has obscured the diverse textures of Indian civilization. Book excerpt: Scientists have discovered the ruins of an ancient city Dwarika off the coast of India in the Marine archeology in the Gulf of Khambhat - earlier known as Gulf of Cambay an inlet of the Arabian Sea on the W coast of India. Artifacts from the city have been carbon dated to about 9,500 years ago. The remains of what has been described as a huge lost city may force historians and archaeologists to radically reconsider their view of ancient human history. To put the significance of such a find in view, the oldest human cities are about 7,000 years old, and the oldest Indian city is Harappa, about 4,600 years old. The Cambay ruins really predate the oldest known human city by more than two thousand years and the oldest Indian city by nearly 5,000 years. The consequences of this, if true, may indeed be huge, as there may be a massive chronological problem in this discovery. It means that the whole model of the origins of civilization with which archaeologists have been working will have to be remade from scratch.It does not take long, however, for the entire story to begin to unravel once a critical eye it turned towards the claims. I always like to consider the credibility of such claims. In this case, finding a city older than any previously known city is not entirely doubtful. It is possible that a culture in one location developed a city which did not survive and was forgotten to history. The oldest example of anything is always only as old as the oldest example discovered, and so scientists are frequently pushing back the date of the "oldest" something as new discoveries are made.Like most scientific discoveries made in a discipline that is already well developed, new discovery tends to deepen knowledge or provide further context, but rarely overturn well-established facts. This would be an interesting new piece to the puzzle of ancient human history but could be little more than a side note as far as other ancient civilizations are concerned.However, the new find does stretch credibility, as it seems now reliable that there was a civilization capable of building a massive city thousands of years earlier than anywhere else for any part of the world except India.

Modern historians by design were probably instructed by successive governments to draw a veil over these atrocities during this period in an effort at reducing social feuding among various communities. This book is also an effort to highlight some of the dangerous trends currently permeating through Indian society. The current narrative in this country is now moving in the direction of highlighting the effects of demographic changes, Islamic militancy, Christian evangelism and Maoism or Naxalism as it is commonly called. Of particular concern to the author is the uncontrolled migration of people from across our borders and Christian evangelism, this latter phenomenon threatening to destroy the social fabric and our native culture. This work attempts to highlight the fact that the Hindu society has unwittingly fallen into the technology trap with no safety net to protect our native culture.

Critically examining past master narratives in light of emerging alternatives, these essayists ask us to reevaluate the stories we tell, the narrative traditions within which they are situated, and the audiences they are designed to persuade.
