Book excerpt: Spanning more than 100,000 verses, the Mahabharata is undoubtedly one of the largest epics in the world. On the surface, the story of the Kuru Dynasty, and their struggles for power, the epic deals with far reaching themes of love, friendship, hatred, and every emotion in between. The great war at its centre ends with the lines between right and wrong and the victors and vanquished all blurring together. This book of Tales is the author’s interpretation of some of the events of the epic, and deals with mostly imaginary scenarios which are not touched upon in the epic. Despite its vastness and scope, the epic glosses over several areas which have formed a part of the imaginary landscape of several authors and this book is the result of the imagination of one such author. This collection includes the short story, “The Forgotten Son,” which had won Honourable Mention in the Writers of the Future Contest.
Book Synopsis In Dialogue with the Mahābhārata by : Brian Black
Download or read book In Dialogue with the Mahābhārata written by Brian Black and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mahābhārata has been explored extensively as a work of mythology, epic poetry, and religious literature, but the text’s philosophical dimensions have largely been under-appreciated by Western scholars. This book explores the philosophical implications of the Mahābhārata by paying attention to the centrality of dialogue, both as the text’s prevailing literary expression and its organising structure. Focusing on five sets of dialogues about controversial moral problems in the central story, this book shows that philosophical deliberation is an integral part of the narrative. Black argues that by paying attention to how characters make arguments and how dialogues unfold, we can better appreciate the Mahābhārata’s philosophical significance and its potential contribution to debates in comparative philosophy today. This is a fresh perspective on the Mahābhārata that will be of great interest to any scholar working in religious studies, Indian/South Asian religions, comparative philosophy, and world literature.

Download or read book The Mahabharata written by and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mahabharata is one of the greatest stories ever told. Though the basic plot is widely known, there is much more to the epic than the dispute between Kouravas and Pandavas that led to the battle in Kurukshetra. It has innumerable sub-plots that accommodate fascinating meanderings and digressions, and it has rarely been translated in full, given its formidable length of 80,000 shlokas or couplets. This magnificent 10-volume unabridged translation of the epic is based on the Critical Edition compiled at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute. * The final volume ends the instructions of the Anushasana Parva. The horse sacrifice is held, and Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, Kunti, Vidura and Sanjaya leave for the forest. Krishna and Balarama die as the Yadavas fight among themselves. The Pandavas leave on the great journey with the famous companion—Dharma disguised as a dog. Refusing to abandon the dog, Yudhishthira goes to heaven in his physical body and sees all the Kurus and the Pandavas are already there. * Every conceivable human emotion figures in the Mahabharata, the reason why the epic continues to hold sway over our imagination. In this lucid, nuanced and confident translation, Bibek Debroy makes the Mahabharata marvellously accessible to contemporary readers.
Book Synopsis Nonviolence in the Mahabharata by : Alf Hiltebeitel
Download or read book Nonviolence in the Mahabharata written by Alf Hiltebeitel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Indian mythological texts like the Mahābhārata and Rāmāyaṇa, there are recurrent tales about gleaners. The practice of "gleaning" in India had more to do with the house-less forest life than with residential village or urban life or with gathering residual post-harvest grains from cultivated fields. Gleaning can be seen a metaphor for the Mahābhārata poets’ art: an art that could have included their manner of gleaning what they made the leftovers (what they found useful) from many preexistent texts into Vyāsa’s “entire thought”—including oral texts and possibly written ones, such as philosophical debates and stories. This book explores the notion of non-violence in the epic Mahābhārata. In examining gleaning as an ecological and spiritual philosophy nurtured as much by hospitality codes as by eating practices, the author analyses the merits and limitations of the 9th century Kashmiri aesthetician Anandavardhana that the dominant aesthetic sentiment or rasa of the Mahābhārata is shanta (peace). Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent reading of the Mahabharata via the Bhagavad Gita are also studied. This book by one of the leaders in Mahābhārata studies is of interest to scholars of South Asian Literary Studies, Religious Studies as well as Peace Studies, South Asian Anthropology and History.

Book Synopsis Mahabharata Unravelled - II by : Ami Ganatra
Download or read book Mahabharata Unravelled - II written by Ami Ganatra and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of Mahabharata Unravelled covered the itihasa of our ancestors true to the narration of Rishi Veda Vyasa. But the Mahabharata is more than a story of the past. It has extensive discourses on ethics, personal and social interaction, administration, jurisprudence and related topics, in the form of conversations. For instance, the Shanti Parva, the largest of the 18 parvas, is a treatise on Raja Dharma. Advice on the responsibilities and duties of leaders and administrators is imparted to Yudhishthira by Bhishma from his bed of arrows on the field of war. Then there is a profound dialogue between Dhritarashtra and the erudite Vidura that appears in Udyoga Parva, popularly known as Vidura Neeti. Likewise, there is a thought-provoking story narrated by Rishi Markandeya to the Pandavas of a meat-seller who teaches dharma to a Brahmin named Kaushika. In this book, Ami Ganatra highlights the most important lessons from the Dharma discourses found in the Mahabharata. Their teachings hold true even in current times, perhaps more so than ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man is a social animal; no man can live in isolation. We are surrounded by people. We have family, friends, social acquaintances, work acquaintances and so on. Since the time of our birth, we add names, relationships and people in our social calendars. They become an integral part of our lives as we interact with them on a daily basis. If a person does not acquire knowledge or does not put their common sense to use, continues to live an ignorant life or chooses to remain blind, it is the worst kind of life. It is a life of misery and ill luck. In Mahabharata Retold Part-1, we saw the reasons behind the war. Mahabharata Retold Part-2 marks the best and worst times of one’s life and the time after such a period. Life never ends. We gain and lose in the same life. Our decisions are right at one stage of life and the same decisions stand wrong on another. Life is a series of changes that are unpredictable by the human mind. It not only covers the greatest war of mankind but also tells us what happened after it—how war changes the world around us. Mahabharata’s war was not the only purpose of this Veda’s compilation.
