Arriving in Egypt during food riots, he heads west into Libya, where billions in oil money have produced little except citizens eager to flee to Europe or join the jihad in Iraq. In Tunis, Mewshaw visits an abandoned Star Wars movie set where Al Qaeda has just kidnapped two tourists. Ignoring U.S. Embassy warnings he crosses into Algeria, traveling through mountain towns and seething metropolises where 200,000 people have died during more than a decade of sectarian violence. Searching for the tombs of seven monks murdered by Islamic fundamentalists, he reaches a village where six more people have been beheaded the day before. When he interviews a repentant terrorist responsible for 5,000 deaths, the man praises the Boy Scouts for training him. By contrast, the Moroccan city of Tangier seems almost tame. But then he meets the last literary protégé of Paul Bowles who accuses Bowles of plagiarism and murder. In the end, the reader, like the author, is immersed in a fascinating adventure that's sometimes tragic, often funny, occasionally terrifying and always a revelation of a strange place and its people.

Book excerpt: The rapid change in consumer preferences pertaining to tourism brings an increase in demand elasticity together. Besides, the fact that security gradually gains importance in tourism has become an important factor that affects demand. Global terror, which gains impetus with the globalization across the world, has been affecting tourism where the effects of globalization are felt the most. Seasonality of tourism and frequent occurrence of crises led by terror have caused tourism to rank first among sectors with high venture in terms of both business and tourism. Although tourism and terrorism are completely different concepts, they are mentioned together in public opinion in recent years. Economic, political and social chaos that is brought about by the partnership of terrorism and tourism reflects upon not only national but also international context and that extends the activity and run of terrorism while it decreases the activity of tourism.

The study suggests that the high sensitivity of tourists to the occurrence of terror is due to a large elasticity of substitution among tourist destinations rather than high risk aversion. This conclusion emerges from the estimated parameters of a model in which "representative tourists" originating from the largest economies optimally choose among destinations characterized by different probabilities of terror activity. The estimated parameters are also used to conduct some counterfactual experiments and assess tourism sensitivity to changes in the incidence of terror and costs. Furthermore, welfare losses due to terror are computed both for countries of origin and destinations.

This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 2.1, University of Plymouth (Cornwall College Newquay (in partnership with UoP)), course: Marine Sports Science (BSc Hons), language: English, abstract: The tourism industry has significant repercussions in regards to economic value to destinations worldwide but is susceptible to external shocks such as terrorism as tourist numbers follow terroristic activity causing economic damage to destinations beyond managerial control. Surf tourism is of growing economic, social and environmental value to destinations in Indonesia due to the region’s abundance of high quality waves and resulting attractiveness to surfers however, it is a region frequented by terrorist activity. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of terrorism on commercial surf tourism as a sub segment of the global tourism industry. Data was obtained using a survey consisting of 5 closed ended questions assessing IAO variables of traveling surfers regarding the perception of terrorism as a risk influencing destination choice and travel plans. 42 usable responses were collected over a three-month period from January 7th to March 28th 2016. Results of the statistical analysis suggest that surfers demonstrate a different behaviour in comparison to other tourists and have a low perception of terrorism as a risk influencing destination choice. In fact, from the data and statistical analysis it appears that the significant reliance on the quality of waves at a destination outweighs the risk of terrorism as an influence on destination choice, therefore accepting the tested hypothesis, which stated that surf tourists do not perceive terrorism as a high risk influencing destination choice or travel plans. Suggestions for future research include a replication of this study using a larger sample size and changes to the design of the questionnaire in order to improve upon limitations and further investigate conspicuous findings of this study as well as potential links to the field of behavioural psychology.

Book excerpt: This book seeks to take a critical approach to the role of the law in shaping and defining tourism and the tourism experience. A central argument of the book will be that the underlying values of tourism are often at odds with a concern for human rights, cultural heritage and sustainable environments. But it will be argued that it would be wrong to think that the role of law is simply relegated to that of dealing with the hard edges of the tourist industry and tourist behaviour. Instead, we will argue that the law itself shapes and has shaped the nature of tourism and that, importantly; there are choices in how it does this. The book will argue that there is a need for a more focussed role for law in tourism and that international law can provide standards within which domestic law can evolve a 'new' law for tourism which might promote human rights and the preservation of culture and the environment. The book will also argue that this role for law is crucial in the current 'age of uncertainty.' The panic of global terrorism has created various tensions for tourism which the law has tended to address through increasing powers for surveillance and policing. This book will argue that the more fundamental issues which it calls on the law to address may provide a more lasting solution to the reasons behind current global conflict and its connection with tourism. The book will utilise a range of legal documents and materials from across a variety of disciplines to achieve its objectives.
