Book Synopsis Between a Rock and a Hard Place by : Aron Ralston

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most extraordinary survival stories ever told -- Aron Ralston's searing account of his six days trapped in one of the most remote spots in America, and how one inspired act of bravery brought him home. It started out as a simple hike in the Utah canyonlands on a warm Saturday afternoon. For Aron Ralston, a twenty-seven-year-old mountaineer and outdoorsman, a walk into the remote Blue John Canyon was a chance to get a break from a winter of solo climbing Colorado's highest and toughest peaks. He'd earned this weekend vacation, and though he met two charming women along the way, by early afternoon he finally found himself in his element: alone, with just the beauty of the natural world all around him. It was 2:41 P.M. Eight miles from his truck, in a deep and narrow slot canyon, Aron was climbing down off a wedged boulder when the rock suddenly, and terrifyingly, came loose. Before he could get out of the way, the falling stone pinned his right hand and wrist against the canyon wall. And so began six days of hell for Aron Ralston. With scant water and little food, no jacket for the painfully cold nights, and the terrible knowledge that he'd told no one where he was headed, he found himself facing a lingering death -- trapped by an 800-pound boulder 100 feet down in the bottom of a canyon. As he eliminated his escape options one by one through the days, Aron faced the full horror of his predicament: By the time any possible search and rescue effort would begin, he'd most probably have died of dehydration, if a flash flood didn't drown him before that. What does one do in the face of almost certain death? Using the video camera from his pack, Aron began recording his grateful good-byes to his family and friends all over the country, thinking back over a life filled with adventure, and documenting a last will and testament with the hope that someone would find it. (For their part, his family and friends had instigated a major search for Aron, the amazing details of which are also documented here for the first time.) The knowledge of their love kept Aron Ralston alive, until a divine inspiration on Thursday morning solved the riddle of the boulder. Aron then committed the most extreme act imaginable to save himself. Between a Rock and a Hard Place -- a brilliantly written, funny, honest, inspiring, and downright astonishing report from the line where death meets life -- will surely take its place in the annals of classic adventure stories.

Book Synopsis Between Rock and a Hard Place by : Robert Parker Mills
Download or read book Between Rock and a Hard Place written by Robert Parker Mills and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the first "fear of AIDS" case tried in America. It tells the untold story of the trial that the general public heard nothing about. By telling the true story from the perspective of the lawyer who actually represented the Estate of Rock Hudson it is hoped the reader, acting as the 13th juror, will see the gross injustice done to the late actor by Christian and Rock's alleged friend, Mark Miller, as well as the court, the jury, and the press, all of which were blinded from the truth by this newly discovered disease called AIDS. Marc Christian claimed he was given a death sentence because Rock didn't tell him of his AIDS diagnosis and continued to have high risk sex with him. 25 years later Christian died not from HIV or AIDS. He was never HIV positive. How could this be if he was telling the truth that he continued having anal sex with Hudson 3 to 5 times a week for 8 months after Rock was first told he had full blown AIDS? Christian was either superhuman and they should clone his blood as a cure for AIDS, or he simply didn't tell the truth at trial, where Rock Hudson could not defend himself because Christian waited until Rock died, and found out he wasn't in his Will, before bringing his lawsuit.

Book Synopsis Between a Rock and a Hard Place by : Tony Evans
Download or read book Between a Rock and a Hard Place written by Tony Evans and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You know the story: God told Abraham he would become a great nation. Then he told him to sacrifice his own (and only) son, Isaac. Abraham obeyed God and was about to kill Isaac—when God intervened. This is a classic 'between a rock and a hard place' situation. So how was Abraham able to obey in the face of losing it all? Or to bring it closer to home—what would you have done? In this powerful book, Tony Evans reveals what to do when your love for God is tested. According to Evans, “When you don’t know God, or when you either forget or dismiss what is true about Him, then you don’t know how to respond…” Moving through passages in both the Old and New Testaments, Evans makes a powerful case for obedient living as the key to an abundant life.

Book Synopsis Rock and Hard Places by : Andrew Mueller
Download or read book Rock and Hard Places written by Andrew Mueller and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2010-02-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Mueller is Australian by birth, a Londoner by choice, a wanderer by nature, and a journalist by profession. Unable to decide between being a rock critic, travel writer, or foreign correspondent, he hit upon the novel, if time-consuming, solution of trying to be all three at once. In Rock and Hard Places, published originally in the U.K. in 1999, now re-envisioned and updated and available for the first time in the United States, he travels to Lebanon with the Prodigy, comes to America with Radiohead, and goes all over the place with U2. He ventures to Bosnia Herzegovina with an aid convoy in the middle of the war, sees Def Leppard play in a cave in Morocco, and attempts to ask the Taliban not only what they think they’re up to, but who they fancy for the World Cup. He flings himself head first down the Cresta Run, sits in Stalin’s armchair, chases ambulances through Moscow, chases some kind of lost tribe in India, wakes up at least once in a park in Reykjavik, and strongly advises avoiding the seafood salad in Sapporo Airport. He’s funny. Occasionally he makes a point.

Book Synopsis The Museum of Useless Efforts by : Cristina Peri Rossi
Download or read book The Museum of Useless Efforts written by Cristina Peri Rossi and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Museum of Useless Efforts Cristina Peri Rossi renders familiar, everyday situations uncanny through lyrical reinterpretations; at the same time, she somehow makes the uncanny appear quite ordinary. Crafting peculiar?and sometimes claustrophobically small?worlds, Peri Rossi explores the universal themes of desire, violence, and truth and the simultaneous and contradictory human capacities to repress and resist, speak and silence, desire and ignore. In these tales an insomniac is tormented by a stubborn lamb that refuses to jump over the fence; the momentary hesitation of a man on a crowded subway staircase who forgets whether he was going up or down unleashes pandemonium; and a patient receives a frantic call from his psychoanalyst, distraught that his wife has taken a new lover.

He took his love for words and for life and expressed it through poetry. Derricks writing became the stage upon which his mind was free to express itself without the fear of being ridiculed or misunderstood. Wearing his heart in his pen, Derrick openly expresses his emotions and feelings regarding a wide variety of everyday experiences as they affect him. With vivid descriptions, colorful imagery, and witty wordplay, he matures and cultivates his true feelings as he faces lifes challenges. He embraces his accomplishments such as graduations and being a loving father, and confronts the challenges presented by divorce, abortion, adultery, abandonment, and loneliness. The Voyage of Cultivation explores a young mans life, taking him on an endless journey of emotional reevaluation. Love? Does love make beauty appear better than it seems? Or does love bring you more pleasure from your reality than it does from your dreams? Honestly, there is no true explanation of love, but at any given moment that I hear the word, youre the only person that I am thinking of.
