Book excerpt: Mikael Krogerus and Roman Tschäppeler have tested the 44 most important communication theories and distilled them in book form, alongside clear and entertaining illustrations. • Want better conversations? Ask open-ended questions that have no right or wrong answers—make your partner feel brilliant. • Want better meetings? Ban smartphones, use a timer, and make everyone stand up. • Want better business deals? Focus on the thing, rather than the person; on similarities, rather than differences; and on good outcomes, rather than perfect ones. Whether you want to present ideas more clearly, improve your small talk, or master the art of introspection, The Communication Book delivers, fusing theoretical knowledge and practical advice in a small but mighty package. With sections on work, the self, relationships and language, this book is indispensable for anyone who wants to improve what they say, and how they say it.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September and October 2001, at least four letters containing anthrax spores were mailed to news media personnel and two U.S. Senators, leading to the first cases of bioterrorism-related anthrax in the United States. The contaminated letters, which were delivered through the U.S. mail system, caused 22 cases of anthrax, 5 of them fatal. Nine postal employees associated with two postal facilities that processed the letters -- Trenton in New Jersey and Brentwood in Washington, D.C. -- contracted anthrax and two Brentwood employees died. The U.S. Postal Service closed Trenton and Brentwood, but other contaminated postal facilities remained open. GAO's review covers Trenton, Brentwood, and three of these other facilities. As requested, this report describes the following: (1) the factors considered in deciding whether to close the five facilities, (2) the information communicated to postal employees about health risks and the extent of the facilities' contamination, and (3) how lessons learned from the response to the contamination could be used in future situations. GAO is making recommendations to help ensure that the Postal Service has comprehensive, clear, accurate, and up-to-date guidance for any future anthrax response. The Postal Service indicated that it had taken or would take action on GAO's recommendations.

While beneficial, the latest in cutting-edge technology and techniques aren’t enough to ensure the best possible care for patients. The key to better healthcare outcomes is communication. Over the past four decades, the Academy of Communication in Healthcare has worked tirelessly with health systems, teaching communication skills that put relationships—between patients and providers, as well as among providers—at the center of care. Now, for the first time, ACH’s proven and effective methodology is detailed in this invaluable step-by-step guide. You’ll learn communication skills that will enable you to: * Provide more accurate diagnoses and effective treatments—and improve patient outcomes * Boost patient adherence and lower hospital readmission rates * Make fewer errors and reduce malpractice risks * Increase patient satisfaction and build teamwork among providers * Further develop your communication skill set—and help others do the same In this practical—and potentially life-saving—volume, you’ll discover special sections on teamwork, coaching, shared decision-making, feedback, conflict engagement, diversity, and communicating through hierarchy. The book also provides institutional initiatives to help you implement change in your organization and outlines a field-tested blueprint for healthier communication across the entire industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a light touch and sensible techniques, Dr. Jim Petersen distills years of counseling and pastoral ministry into an informal volume loaded with practical tips, examples and techniques to practice. His book highlights our culture’s courtroom-like communication that often puts people at odds with each other. Most people think they listen well but don’t and folks walk away unheard, misunderstood and disconnected. Readers will chuckle in recognition at the tongue-in-cheek but spot-on “flat-brain” theory of emotions. It shows how and why we get upset and confused in tense situations and what to do about it. It lays the practical groundwork to better manage emotionally loaded situations. This book shows communication that works and is equally appropriate for professionals, such as pastors and therapists and for the general public. The ingenious Talker-Listener Card gives a taking-turn method to end arguing as we know it. It works for couples, business relationships, church listening programs, counselors, group discussions and the family dinner table listening game. Thirty listening techniques will help the reader immediately begin to turn enemies into friends, poor relationships into decent ones and good relationships into better ones. These accessible skills are being used in pastoral counseling classes, counseling offices, church staffs, professional offices, on dates, in corporate board rooms and at kitchen tables around the country .

Book excerpt: A Tried, True, and Tested Formula to Increase Customer Satisfaction and Boost Your Brand One conversation with a client changed everything for the author, Charlotte Purvis: "We do not want the people answering the phones to sound like they are just sitting around at home talking to their family and friends." That statement was the catalyst for Charlotte Purvis to develop the 3-F Customer Communication Formula. Friendly + Formal + Focused = Customer Service Success This Formula helped her clients create an environment where Customer Service Professionals (CSPs) spoke in a manner that customers would know they were contacting a Best-in-Class Contact Center, instead of someone sitting at home chatting on the phone with their family and friends. That conversation with the client was over 20 years ago, and since then Charlotte Purvis has coached and trained hundreds of Customer Service Professionals using her 3-F Customer Service Formula. As a result, literally millions of customers have benefited from the service they've received based on this formula. "Customer Service Professionals" include advisors, agents, consultants, assistants, specialists, representatives, coordinators, sales enrollment specialists, and basically anyone who communicates with customers. In a world that is becoming increasingly more competitive, when anyone can start a business with a website and a product idea, and when more customers are buying online than ever before, outstanding customer service will set you apart from your competition. There is no question that investing in improving your customer service will pay dividends in the long term. This book is for Customer Service Professionals, Corporate Leaders, Small Business Owners, Faith Community Leaders, Managers, Supervisors, Trainers, Coaches, Subject Matter Experts, Government Agencies, Non-profit Organizations, and anyone interested in customer communication and customer service success. The Three Phases of Customer Interactions-Connection, Conversation, and Closure-and how to apply the 3-F Formula to each phase. How to speak the language of customer service, manage challenging situations, and offer each customer an excellent experience. 10 Statements Every Organization Needs in order to develop a custom approach to Customer Service. How to provide Extreme Customer Service, especially during a global crisis. Success Stories about how the 3-F Customer Communication Formula has helped clients reach and exceed their customer service goals. The Charlotte Purvis Story about how she took lessons learned in her beloved Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and from her years of client engagements to develop a formula that not only benefits customers but also helps her clients advance in their personal and professional lives. And More! This book is really two books in one. Part 1 is for Customer Service Professionals (CSPs) and part 2 is for Customer Service Leaders. Book excerpt: This IBM® Redbooks® publication documents the strength and value of the IBM security strategy with IBM z Systems hardware and software (referred to in this book by the previous product name, IBM System z®). In an age of increasing security consciousness and more dangerous and advanced persistent threats, System z provides the capabilities to address today's business security challenges. This book explores how System z hardware is designed to provide integrity, process isolation, and cryptographic capability to help address security requirements. We highlight the features of IBM z/OS® and other operating systems that offer a variety of customizable security elements. We also describe z/OS and other operating systems and additional software that use the building blocks of System z hardware to meet business security needs. We explore these from the perspective of an enterprise security architect and how a modern mainframe must fit into an enterprise security architecture. This book is part of a three-volume series that focuses on guiding principles for optimized mainframe security configuration within a holistic enterprise security architecture. The intended audience includes enterprise security architects, planners, and managers who are interested in exploring how the security design and features of the System z platform, the z/OS operating system, and associated software address current issues, such as data encryption, authentication, authorization, network security, auditing, ease of security administration, and monitoring.
