Book Synopsis Language and Slavery by : Jacques Arends
Download or read book Language and Slavery written by Jacques Arends and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This posthumous work by Jacques Arends offers new insights into the emergence of the creole languages of Suriname including Sranantongo or Suriname Plantation Creole, Ndyuka, and Saramaccan, and the sociohistorical context in which they developed. Drawing on a wealth of sources including little known historical texts, the author points out the relevance of European settlements prior to colonization by the English in 1651 and concludes that the formation of the Surinamese creoles goes back further than generally assumed. He provides an all-encompassing sociolinguistic overview of the colony up to the mid-19th century and shows how ethnicity, language attitude, religion and location had an effect on which languages were spoken by whom. The author discusses creole data gleaned from the earliest sources and interprets the attested variation. The book is completed by annotated textual data, both oral and written and representing different genres and stages of the Surinamese creoles. It will be of interest to linguists, historians, anthropologists, literary scholars and anyone interested in Suriname.

Book Synopsis A Vision for London, 1889-1914 by : Susan D. Pennybacker
Download or read book A Vision for London, 1889-1914 written by Susan D. Pennybacker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-11-08 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The London County Council was a the world's largest municipal government and a laboratory for social experimentation before the Great War. It sought to master the problems of metropolitan amelioration, political economy and public culture. Pennybacker's social history tests the vision of London Progressivism against its practitioners' accomplishments. She argues that the historical memory of the hopes inspired by LCC achievement and the disillusions spawned by failure, are potent forces in today's deeply ambivalent responses to metropolitan politics in London. The `new women', bohemian London, scandal in the building industry, midwifery, lodging houses, children's provision and the music hall were all provocative issues in LCC work. Their story richly evokes life in the turn-of-the-century metropolis and illustrates the complexities of `municipal socialism'.

Book Synopsis Music and the Occult by : Joscelyn Godwin
Download or read book Music and the Occult written by Joscelyn Godwin and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is an adventure into the unexplored territory of French esoteric philosophies and their relation to music. Occultism and esotericism flourished in nineteenth-century France as they did nowhere else. Many philosophers sought the key to the universe, some claimed to have found it, and, in the unitive vision that resulted, music invariably played an important part. These modern Pythagoreans all believed in the Harmony of the Spheres and in the powerful effects of music on the human soul and body. Faced with the challenge of the rationalist Enlightenment, then with that of modern scientism, they adapted their occultism to the prevailing style ... A widely published musicologist and authority on esotericism, Godwin is able to give a clear and concise context for these philosophers' often surprising beliefs, and he demonstrates how this "speculative music" influenced composers such as Satie and Debussy, who were familiar with occultism. His long study of music and the Western esoteric tradition makes him uniquely qualified to unravel the strange story of these forgotten sages."--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Sri Swami Satchidananda, Apostle of Peace by : Joan Wiener Bordow
Download or read book Sri Swami Satchidananda, Apostle of Peace written by Joan Wiener Bordow and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The dedicated ever enjoy supreme peace. Therefore live only to serve." This direction from ancient scriptures has been a guiding light for Sri Swami Satchidananda, one of the world's most respected and loved spiritual masters. His life has been dedicated to the service of others--all others regardless of race, religion, nationality, or any other category. An authentic holy man with a keen sense of humor and humility, Swami Satchidananda's radiance, benevolence, tolerance and understanding have helped to bring peace and enlightenment not only to those who practice Yoga but to thousands of Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims and others all over the globe. Sri Swami Satchidananda: Apostle of Peace tells the life story of this remarkable being. Born into a deeply spiritual family, he became a successful businessman and happy family man. After losing his wife, he chose the path of renunciation and devoted himself completely to spiritual life. Years of studying with many great sages and saints led him to his Guru, the legendary Sri Swami Sivananda. Swami Satchidananda soon became known as a great spiritual teacher in both the East and the West. Nicely balanced between the actual sayings, writings, and informal teachings of Swami Satchidananda himself and the running narrative of his extraordinary life, this biography stands as both an amazing, highly entertaining story, and as an inspirational guide and book of spiritual wisdom. From the Foreword by Father Thomas Keating, OCSO: "Sri Swami Satchidananda has devoted himself tirelessly to the promotion of spirituality, transcultural values and understanding among the world religions."
Book Synopsis Genocide Perspectives IV by : Colin Tatz
Download or read book Genocide Perspectives IV written by Colin Tatz and published by UTS ePRESS. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genocide isn't past tense and the Nazi and Bosnian eras are not yet closed. The demonising of people as 'unworthy' and expendable is ever-present and the consequences are all too evident in the daily news. These fourteen essays by Australian scholars confront the issues: the need for a measuring scale that encompasses differences and similarities between seemingly divergent cases of the crime; the complicity of bureaucracies, the healing professions and the churches in this 'crime of crimes'; the quest for historical justice for genocide victims generally following the Nuremberg Trials; the fate of children in the Nazi and postwar eras; the 'worthiness' of Armenians, Jews and Romani people in twentieth century Europe; and the imperative to tackle early warning signs of an incipient genocide. Colin Tatz is a founding director of the Australian Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, visiting fellow in Politics and International Relations at the Australian National University, and honorary visiting fellow at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. He teaches and publishes in comparative race politics, youth suicide, migration studies, and sports history.
