Palliative care is so much more than just treating symptoms at the end of a patient's life. Palliative care focuses on symptom management throughout the course of a patient's treatment and can be given alone, or in conjunction with chemotherapy or other curative treatment(s) (Yany and Mahon, 2012). Palliative care is defined as any treatment that will alleviate symptom burden and provide the patient with a better quality of life (Cramer, 2010). The initiation of palliative care should be started at the beginning of treatment for a patient with for a metastatic cancer diagnosis, in order for full benefits to be realized by the patient and their family members. Chemotherapy nurses play a significant role in the process of advocating for, and the initiation of, palliative care for their patients (Beland, 2013). Chemotherapy nurses usually work with a team of health care professions that are dedicated to providing palliative care to patients. This group is usually composed of a doctor, nurse, and other support staff, as needed to provide a comprehensive support system for patients. This paper covers the subject of palliative care through descriptive measures including: the problem statement, implementation, evaluation, dissemination and review of literature. It is the hope of this author that this paper will help facilitate the needed research, in this area, to provide palliative care early into the course of treatment, as a standard of care, for all cancer patients with metastatic disease.
