Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we propose a new family of Belief Conditioning Rules (BCR) for belief revision. These rules are not directly related with the fusion of several sources of evidence but with the revision of a belief assignment available at a given time according to the new truth (i.e. conditioning constraint) one has about the space of solutions of the problem.

Book Synopsis On the Behavior of Dempster’s Rule of Combination and the Foundations of Dempster-Shafer Theory by : Albena Tchamova
Download or read book On the Behavior of Dempster’s Rule of Combination and the Foundations of Dempster-Shafer Theory written by Albena Tchamova and published by Infinite Study. This book was released on 2012-04-16 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the base of simple emblematic example we analyze and explain the inconsistent and inadequate behavior of Dempster-Shafer’s rule of combination as a valid method to combine sources of evidences. We identify the cause and the effect of the dictatorial power behavior of this rule and of its impossibility to manage the conflicts between the sources. For a comparison purpose, we present the respective solution obtained by the more efficient PCR5 fusion rule proposed originally in Dezert-Smarandache Theory framework. Finally, we identify and prove the inherent contradiction of Dempster-Shafer Theory foundations.
Book Synopsis Resistance to Belief Change by : Joseph R. Lao
Download or read book Resistance to Belief Change written by Joseph R. Lao and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the human proclivity to resist changing our beliefs. Drawing on psychological, neurological, and philosophical research, and integrating topics as wide ranging as emotion, cognition, social (and physical) context, and learning theory, Lao and Young explore why this resistance to change impedes our learning and progression. They also suggest that failure to adapt our beliefs to available and informed evidence can incur costs that may be seen in personal growth, politics, science, law, medicine, education, and business. Resistance to Belief Change explores the various manifestations of resistance, including overt, discursive, and especially inertial forms of resistance. As well as the influential factors that can impact upon them, the book also examines how the self-directed learner, as well as teachers, may structure the learning experience to overcome resistance and facilitate progressive and adaptive learning. Lao and Young find that the impediments to learning and resistance to change are far more prevalent and costly than previously suggested in research, and so this book will be of interest to a range of people in cognitive development, social psychology, and clinical and educational psychology.

Book Synopsis A Mathematical Theory of Evidence by : Glenn Shafer
Download or read book A Mathematical Theory of Evidence written by Glenn Shafer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1976-04-21 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both in science and in practical affairs we reason by combining facts only inconclusively supported by evidence. Building on an abstract understanding of this process of combination, this book constructs a new theory of epistemic probability. The theory draws on the work of A. P. Dempster but diverges from Depster's viewpoint by identifying his "lower probabilities" as epistemic probabilities and taking his rule for combining "upper and lower probabilities" as fundamental. The book opens with a critique of the well-known Bayesian theory of epistemic probability. It then proceeds to develop an alternative to the additive set functions and the rule of conditioning of the Bayesian theory: set functions that need only be what Choquet called "monotone of order of infinity." and Dempster's rule for combining such set functions. This rule, together with the idea of "weights of evidence," leads to both an extensive new theory and a better understanding of the Bayesian theory. The book concludes with a brief treatment of statistical inference and a discussion of the limitations of epistemic probability. Appendices contain mathematical proofs, which are relatively elementary and seldom depend on mathematics more advanced that the binomial theorem.
Download or read book Belief Change written by Dov M. Gabbay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-10-31 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belief change is an emerging field of artificial intelligence and information science dedicated to the dynamics of information and the present book provides a state-of-the-art picture of its formal foundations. It deals with the addition, deletion and combination of pieces of information and, more generally, with the revision, updating and fusion of knowledge bases. The book offers an extensive coverage of, and seeks to reconcile, two traditions in the kinematics of belief that often ignore each other - the symbolic and the numerical (often probabilistic) approaches. Moreover, the work encompasses both revision and fusion problems, even though these two are also commonly investigated by different communities. Finally, the book presents the numerical view of belief change, beyond the probabilistic framework, covering such approaches as possibility theory, belief functions and convex gambles. The work thus presents a unified view of belief change operators, drawing from a widely scattered literature embracing philosophical logic, artificial intelligence, uncertainty modelling and database systems. The material is a clearly organised guide to the literature on the dynamics of epistemic states, knowledge bases and uncertain information, suitable for scholars and graduate students familiar with applied logic, knowledge representation and uncertain reasoning.
