Huizenga, reveals the significance of St. Matthew’s Jesus: He is Emmanuel, God with us always, who saves his people from their sins by dying for them. In showing how Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament, gave us a way to live, and taught us how to follow the narrow way to the kingdom of heaven, St. Matthew modeled the fourfold way of reading Scripture according to letter and spirit. Above all, St. Matthew’s Gospel presents Jesus Christ founding the Catholic Church as a robust, rigorous religion with rich rituals, chiefly the sacrificial Eucharist as sustenance on the narrow way to heaven. Jesus demands much of his Church, but the same Jesus who commands his Church also promises and delivers much—above all, himself. Keyed to the lectionary and featuring a section on the relevance of St. Matthew’s Gospel for our contemporary age, Behold the Christ will make the Gospel and indeed the Faith real to today’s readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today with so many changes in society, stress in our daily lives, and mistrusts among nations it is important to look to the Bible for guidance and inspiration. God still speaks to men through His Word. Matthew focuses on Jesus as the Messiah and the King. He demonstrates that Jesus was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and the promise God had made to Israel. Although Matthew does not have the universal appeal of Luke, he does show how Gentiles were a part of Jesus’ ministry in spite of His desire to focus on the people of Israel. They are represented in the genealogy, in the visit of the Magi, in the healing of the centurion’s servant, the deliverance of the daughter of the Syrophoenician woman, the centralization of His ministry in “Galilee of the Gentiles,” and in the Great Commission. The commentary is an exposition of the Gospel of Matthew, which considers the context, historical background, parallel passages of Scripture, in addition to theological principles. It includes a bibliography, charts, maps, and other helps. Its contents are designed to help pastors, teachers, and Bible students to read the Gospel of Matthew with greater clarity and understanding, and helps them proclaim God’s Word with power and conviction. This new commentary on the Gospel of Matthew provides the scholar, student, and ministry practitioner with access to the Gospel. It opens Matthew’s message of Jesus as the Messiah and King with clarity and emphasis. One comes away from the commentary encouraged to proclaim that same message—Jesus is the Messiah and King! James Railey, Jr., PhD, Former Academic Dean A/G Theological Seminary Dr. Charles Estridge has given students and preachers of Scripture a great gift in this new Gospel commentary. His study of Matthew is wide-ranging in its sources, faithful to the plain meaning of Scripture, concise in structure, warmly pastoral in application, and irenic in its discussion of varying viewpoints. Best of all, the serious student of God’s Word will find spiritual bread here which he or she can feed to others who hunger for the Word of God. Enjoy this exposition of Matthew’s five discourses on the teachings and life of the Messiah—the One who inherited the Kingdom of David and fulfilled the world-changing promises made to Abraham! Paul York, PhD, Chi Alpha Missions Training and Mobilization Dr. Charles Estridge is a capable scholar and a ministry practitioner with years of experience in pastoral ministry and theological training in bible schools in America and Africa. Moreover, he is a man who loves Jesus Christ and who has spent his life in service for the Church. Pastors, teachers, and students of the Bible will find his commentary full of insight into the message of the Gospel of Matthew. It demonstrates careful exegesis and practical reflection on the meaning of the text. It is a valuable tool that will help those called by God to preach and teach His word. I highly recommend it. Jesus Who Came to Blot Out Your Sins (Matthew 3:13-17) 11. “Behold, I Send My Messenger” (Mark 1:1-5) 12. Let’s Believe in Jesus with the Understanding of John the Baptist (Luke 1:1-17) The New Testament begins with the Four Gospels, that is, the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. All of the Four Gospels dealt with and completely recorded the ministry of John the Baptist. It is because his ministry is so important. Without the understanding of the ministry of John the Baptist, we cannot claim to know the ministry of Jesus Christ. If so, we can ask ourselves, "Was the ministry of John the Baptist recorded in the Four Gospels of that much importance?" Pointing out John the Baptist, even Jesus said, "And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come" (Matthew 11:14). Hence, John the Baptist was a man born on this earth to carry out a special ministry. Jesus also said, "And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force" (Matthew 11:12). This is true because John the Baptist was born on this earth, and when he baptized Jesus Christ, the sins of this world were passed on to Him. Thus, Jesus was able to take on the sins of this world at once. By having allowed this to be so, the Lord has allowed those who believe in the ministry of John the Baptist and the ministry of Jesus to enter Heaven by receiving the cleansing of sins. This is the meaning inherent in the Scripture passage from the Gospel of Matthew chapter 11, verses 12-14. Do you believe that the gospel of the water and the Spirit is the Truth? If you do, it means that you know the ministry of John the Baptist and the ministry of Jesus completely. However, many Christians who do not understand the ministry of John the Baptist do not know the gospel Truth of the water and the Spirit, and they lead their life of faith only with the fervors of their flesh. Though ignorance, such people do not even try to know the ministry of John the Baptist written in the Four Gospels. Hence, the ministry of John the Baptist has all too long been coming under disregard even among Christians who claim to believe in Jesus. Perhaps for this reason, I find there isn't that many people who have interest in the ministry of John the Baptist these days. Thus, people are prone to look strangely at those who have interest on this topic. It is because many people have been looking away from the ministry of John the Baptist and the ministry of Jesus reluctantly for all too long. The New Life Mission https://www.bjnewlife.org

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognising veiled allusions to the Old Testament in the four Gospels has long contributed to our understanding of the Gospels message. Nicholas Lunn takes the investigation of allusion a significant step further in The Gospels Through Old Testament Eyes. He explores allusions not just in isolated verses, but rather occurring throughout whole passages, demonstrating that many Gospel episodes interact with specific Old Testament accounts through an extended sequence of allusions. Furthermore, his examination is not restricted to episodes presented by a single Gospel, but includes allusions distributed across two or more Gospel treatments of the same event. In The Gospels Through Old Testament Eyes, Lunn offers a series of self-contained studies that bring to light allusions, many of them previously unnoted, that affirm the intricate interweaving of New Testament texts with those of the Old. This volume will greatly enhance your appreciation of the Gospels' presentation of Jesus's life and ministry. It will inform and equip scholars, pastors, preachers, Bible teachers and readers to appreciate new depths in the Gospels.

Book excerpt: Much of the material embodied in this volume has appeared in the course of the past nine years, in The Sunday School Times, and is used here in accordance with an understanding had with, and permission given by, the owners of that periodical when I assumed responsibility for the leading article on the weekly International Lesson. With so much matter already in print and available for use, it was thought best not to wait until circumstances permitted me to give a series of lectures on Matthew to be stenographically reported and edited for publication, but rather to write a connected exposition, filling in with new material what was lacking in the notes from The Sunday School Times. This accounts for the different form in which this book appears to those on the other Gospels for which I have been responsible. I send the book out with the earnest prayer that it may prove helpful to many. —H. A. Ironside

Book excerpt: Scripture says three times to Behold (look intently upon) Jesus. The first is the beginning of his ministry when John the Baptist exclaimed, “Behold the Lamb of God...” (John 1:36). Another is when none in heaven or earth is qualified to take the little book (the title deed to the earthly kingdoms) from the hand of Him sitting on the throne, the Apostle John is told, “Behold the Lion of the tribe of Judah...” (Rev. 5:5) The third is when Pilate, after finding no fault in Jesus, presented him before his accusers saying, “Behold the Man!” (John 19:5) Beholding the Lamb, we see the sacrificial Lamb that atones for sin. Beholding the Lion, we see the sovereign King that will make all things new. Beholding the Man, we see the second Adam who lived a perfect life among us. Knowing about this man’s humanity is as important as knowing about the other two aspects of his being. So what kind of a man was Jesus? This book introduces the reader to the individual his contemporary’s saw, while relying only on the Gospels as the source materials. His contemporaries saw someone quite different from the person modern Christians imagine him to be. The biblical Jesus was much more robust than contemporary teachers portray him. Due to incorrect, even disingenuous teaching, the modern church presents a witness that is less robust than was the case in previous generations. We need to behold the real biblical Jesus because, “The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.” – (Luke 6:40 KJV)
