Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and Comparative Toxicology, Volume 31 aims to explore some of the potentially important and crucial areas in experimental toxicology. The book discusses tumor promoters and genotoxic chemicals in short-term testing for carcinogenicity, as well as the significance of preneoplastic liver lesions in experimental animals. The text also describes the factors known to be associated with increased risk of liver neoplasia as a human disease, and the extent to which it is known that the same factors have a similar effect in laboratory animals. Neurobehavioral toxicology; immunotoxicology; and the endocrine system as the target in experimental toxicology are also considered. The book further tackles the uses of gamma-glutamyltransferase in experimental toxicology, as well as the predictive value of ocular irritation tests. Toxicologists, biochemists, pathologists, and those involved in preventive medicine and community health will find the text invaluable.

Human behavior can be affected by such exposure and can give important clues that a person or population is in danger. If we can understand the mechanisms of these changes, we can develop better ways of testing for toxic chemical exposure and, most important, better prevention programs. This volume explores the emerging field of neurobehavioral toxicology and the potential of behavior studies as a noninvasive and economical means for risk assessment and monitoring. Pioneers in this field explore its promise for detecting environmental toxins, protecting us from exposure, and treating those who are exposed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was developed in response to a need in behavioral teratology for a comprehen sive set of reviews of the field's many topics brought together in a single source. This volume represents the first effort to synthesize and integrate research in the field since 1969 when Justin Joffe wrote Prenatal Determinants of Behaviour. Joffe's book became a standard reference for many years, particularly for the experimental design of animal investigations. It has become increasingly evident, however, that some aspects of design once considered inviolate have changed and become part of a more flexible approach. In current research the emphasis is on a set of prioritized, but focused, experimental ques tions rather than on designs which factor all possible variables into every experiment. Also, new design considerations have arisen over the last 15 years, not appreciated when Joffe wrote. Moreover, the sheer volume of new experimental evidence generated since 1969 has increased the content of the field several fold. These considerations made a new review and critical appraisal of the field compelling. The book is divided into four major sections. Part I contains four chapters. These chapters provide discussions of the general principles of behavioral teratogenesis, and information on the historical, governmental, and methodological contexts in which the field operates. The purpose of these chapters is to provide the framework within which the review chapters in the remainder of the book may best be understood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic provides stark evidence of the importance of medicine on a global scale. However, revisiting the influenza pandemic of 1918 provided a perspective as we searched for a viable vaccine and instituted public health measures. This shows that medical knowledge is an accumulative process extending to the past and it is in the spirit of that legacy that this bibliography has been compiled. The book is a one-stop resource that cites literature related to the historical aspects of medicine. It also acknowledges medicine’s global reach and devotes significant effort in that respect. Although the online world seems to dominate on both a social and educational level, there is still a need for thoughtfully curated and focused reference works and this bibliography accomplishes that goal. The book has 9,000+ citations. It utilizes the WHO's International classification of Diseases for the section on diseases and disorders and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's Product Code Classification Database for the section on medical devices, equipment, and instruments. It includes detailed subject, geographuc, and people indexes for an easy reference.

Neurobehavioral development and maintenance include both neurobiological and neurochemical development of the brain and are affected by nutritional influences. Methods for assessing neurotoxicity and current status of neurotoxicity screening procedures are described. Specific research is detailed briefly. Finally, current issues in neurotoxicity such as food colors, amino acids, vitamins and megavitamins,drug/diet interaction, nutrients as drugs, dietary control of behavior, anticonvulsant drugs, and fetal alcohol syndrome are discussed.
