For example, steel plates and Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) jackets are externally bonded to members to increase their capacity in flexure and shear. However, due to the issue of corrosion these strengthening systems may lose their efficiency with time. FRP materials have been used to strengthen many structural components of different shapes and types. FRP jackets, FRP Strips, and FRP rods have commonly been used to rehabilitate existing structural components. The many advantages of using FRP as strengthening materials have made this material an attractive alternative: advantages such as lightweight, high strength, and ease of setting up. Among the many applications using FRP, Near Surface Mounted -- Fiber Reinforced polymer (NSM-FRP) is a promising technique used to strengthen concrete members. However, de-bonding issues have to be overcome to make this technique efficient and reliable. The NSM-FRP technique consists of making a groove along the surface of the concrete member to be retrofitted with depth less than the cover of the member. After cleaning the groove, epoxy paste is used to fill two-thirds of the groove's depth. The FRP element is then mounted in the groove. Finally, the groove is filled with epoxy and the excessive epoxy is leveled with surface of the concrete. This technique makes the FRP material completely covered by epoxy in the cover of the concrete. This method can be used for strengthening both the positive and negative moment regions of girders and slabs. Groove size, paste, concrete, and rods properties are the main variables that control the efficiency of the NSM-FRP rods. The main objective of this research project is to determine the behavior of reinforced concrete beams that are strengthened with NSM-CFRP reinforcement bars. In this research project, the bond characteristics of NSM-CFRP reinforcement bars are first determined from pullout tests. Then, NSM-CFRP rods are installed in reinforced concrete beams and the beams are tested. Loads, strains, and deflections are measured and theoretical and measured capacities are compared. Finally, the reliability and efficiency of using NSM-CFRP rods technique in retrofitting existing structures is observed.

Book excerpt: In December 1996, the then CEB established a Task Group with the main objective to elaborate design guidelines for the use of FRP reinforcement in accordance with the design format of the CEB-FIP Model Code and Eurocode2. With the merger of CEB and FIP into fib in 1998, this Task Group became fib TG 9.3 FRP Reinforcement for concrete structures in Commission 9 Reinforcing and Prestressing Materials and Systems. The Task Group consists of about 60 members, representing most European universities, research institutes and industrial companies working in the field of advanced composite reinforcement for concrete structures, as well as corresponding members from Canada, Japan and USA. Meetings are held twice a year and on the research level its work is supported by the EU TMR (European Union Training and Mobility of Researchers) Network "ConFibreCrete”. The work of fib TG 9.3 is performed by five working parties (WP): Material Testing and Characterization (MT&C) Reinforced Concrete (RC) Prestressed Concrete (PC) Externally Bonded Reinforcement (EBR) Marketing and Applications (M&A) This technical report constitutes the work conducted as of to date by the EBR party. This bulletin gives detailed design guidelines on the use of FRP EBR, the practical execution and the quality control, based on the current expertise and state-of-the-art knowledge of the task group members. It is regarded as a progress report since it is not the aim of this report to cover all aspects of RC strengthening with composites. Instead, it focuses on those aspects that form the majority of the design problems. several of the topics presented are subject of ongoing research and development, and the details of some modelling approaches may be subject to future revisions. as knowledge in this field is advancing rapidly, the work of the EBR WP will continue. Inspite of this limit in scope, considerable effort has been made to present a bulletin that is today’s state-of-art in the area of strengthening of concrete structures by means of externally bonded FRP reinforcement.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The demand for strengthening of aging reinforced concrete (RC) structures are continuously rising. Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) are the most widely used externally bonded-reinforcing (EBR) materials for strengthening and retrofitting of RC structural members. The use of high strength galvanized steel mesh (GSM) strengthening material has recently gained some acceptance. However, Both CFRP and GSM have high strength but have low ductility. Recently developed aluminum alloys (AA) have high ductility and some desirable characteristics that may overcome some of the shortcomings of CFRP and GSM. Combining AA with CFRP and GSM will result in a hybrid material with balanced strength and ductility. Therefore, the major aim of this research is to develop a hybrid ductile and strong retrofitting system by combining AA plates with GSM and CFRP laminates to strengthen RC beams in flexure. A comprehensive experimental program was carried out to determine the tensile strength and the bond strength of the hybrid system. Fifteen-coupon specimens were tested for tensile strength, six specimens of concrete prisms for bond strength and 25 T-beam specimens for flexural strength under a four-point loading. Results showed an increase in the flexural capacity of the strengthened specimen ranging from 10% to 77% compared to the control beam and a decline in ductility of 13% to 59% compared to the un-strengthened specimen. Furthermore, analytical models based on ACI 440.2R-08 guidelines were employed to capture the flexural behavior of the tested specimens. Experimental results correlated well with the analytical predictions in a range of 30% of the experimental values. The study concluded that the newly proposed hybrid systems are promising systems for the improvement of the flexural behavior (strength and ductility) of RC beams."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The in situ rehabilitation or upgrading of reinforced concrete members using bonded steel plates is an effective, convenient and economic method of improving structural performance. However, disadvantages inherent in the use of steel have stimulated research into the possibility of using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in its place, providing a non-corrosive, more versatile strengthening system. This book presents a detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforces polymer composite plates. It is based to a large extent on material developed or provided by the consortium which studied the technology of plate bonding to upgrade structural units using carbon fibre / polymer composite materials. The research and trial tests were undertaken as part of the ROBUST project, one of several ventures in the UK Government's DTI-LINK Structural Composites Programme. The book has been designed for practising structural and civil engineers seeking to understand the principles and design technology of plate bonding, and for final year undergraduate and postgraduate engineers studying the principles of highway and bridge engineering and structural engineering. Book excerpt: The use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) anchors can improve the performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in flexure with CFRP sheets. This improvement results from delaying or controlling the debonding of FRP sheets at failure. In this research, six full-scale T beams and six full-scale rectangular beams are prepared and tested as two separate series. All the specimens are strengthened identically using three layers of unidirectional CFRP sheets and one layer of bidirectional CFRP sheet. The first strengthened beam in each series is anchored with side GFRP bars inserted longitudinally to both sides of the beam. The second strengthened beam in each series is anchored with GFRP patches applied to both sides of the beam. CFRP spike anchors are utilized for the other beams in the two series. The third beam in each series is secured with CFRP spike anchors of 16 mm diameter at 140 mm spacing along the shear span. The fourth strengthened beam in each series is anchored with CFRP spike anchors of 19 mm diameter at 203 mm spacing along the shear span. Four CFRP anchors are applied to each shear span of the fifth beam in each series with 16 mm- diameter (spaced at 406 mm) to secure the flexural CFRP sheets. An end CFRP anchorage technique is considered for the last beam in each series, which includes installing one CFRP spike anchor placed at 76 mm from the free edge of CFRP sheets. The beams were tested under four-point bending until failure and the results for each series are evaluated. In addition, the outcome is compared with other anchorage techniques that have been examined by some researchers utilizing the same beam geometry and properties. The experimental testing and nonlinear analysis showed improvement in the flexural performance of anchored beams compared with those strengthened beams without anchorage. By attaining debonding or rupture failure modes for the T beams and concrete crushing failure mode for the rectangular specimens, the ultimate sectional force capacity is achieved. Accordingly, the results prove that the anchors offer an effective solution against premature debonding failure.

Book excerpt: Use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material has been a good solution for many problems in many fields. FRP is available in different types (carbon and glass) and shapes (sheets, rods, and laminates). Civil engineers have used this material to overcome the weakness of concrete members that may have been caused by substandard design or due to changes in the load distribution or to correct the weakness of concrete structures over time specially those subjected to hostile weather conditions. The attachment of FRP material to concrete surfaces to promote the function of the concrete members within the frame system is called Externally Bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymer Systems. Another common way to use the FRP is called Near Surface Mounted (NSM) whereby the material is inserted into the concrete members through grooves within the concrete cover. Concrete beam-column joints designed and constructed before 1970s were characterized by weak column-strong beam. Lack of transverse reinforcement within the joint reign, hence lack of ductility in the joints, and weak concrete could be one of the main reasons that many concrete buildings failed during earthquakes around the world. A technique was used in the present work to compensate for the lack of transverse reinforcement in the beam-column joint by using the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets as an Externally Bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymer System in order to retrofit the joint region, and to transfer the failure to the concrete beams. Six specimens in one third scale were designed, constructed, and tested. The proposed retrofitting technique proved to be very effective in improving the behavior of non-ductile beam-column joints, and to change the final mode of failure. The comparison between beam-column joints before and after retrofitting is presented in this study as exhibited by load versus deflection, load versus CFRP strain, energy dissipation, and ductility.

Book excerpt: Current conventional strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams using epoxy-bonded fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) technique requires difficult surface preparation and is susceptible to a brittle form of failure due to peel-off or debonding of the FRP laminate from the beam. This book presents two new mechanically-anchored FRP and dry fibre strengthening systems that can be used to improve the performance of RC beams in flexure and shear.
