Since her well-being is linked to the well-being of the entire colony, the ability to find her among the residents of the hive is an essential beekeeping skill. In QueenSpotting, experienced beekeeper and professional “swarm catcher” Hilary Kearney challenges readers to “spot the queen” with 48 fold-out visual puzzles — vivid up-close photos of the queen hidden among her many subjects. QueenSpotting celebrates the unique, fascinating life of the queen bee chronicles of royal hive happenings such as The Virgin Death Match, The Nuptual Flight — when the queen mates with a cloud of male drones high in the air — and the dramatic Exodus of the Swarm from the hive. Readers will thrill at Kearney’s adventures in capturing these swarms from the strange places they settle, including a Jet Ski, a couch, a speed boat, and an owl’s nesting box. Fascinating, fun, and instructive, backyard beekeepers and nature lovers alike will find reason to return to the pages again and again. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeley, a world authority on honey bees, sheds light on why wild honey bees are still thriving while those living in managed colonies are in crisis. Drawing on the latest science as well as insights from his own pioneering fieldwork, he describes in extraordinary detail how honey bees live in nature and shows how this differs significantly from their lives under the management of beekeepers. Seeley presents an entirely new approach to beekeeping--Darwinian Beekeeping--which enables honey bees to use the toolkit of survival skills their species has acquired over the past thirty million years, and to evolve solutions to the new challenges they face today. He shows beekeepers how to use the principles of natural selection to guide their practices, and he offers a new vision of how beekeeping can better align with the natural habits of honey bees.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full color 58 honey bee and related pictures. This book is for the beginner through advanced beekeeper. After 50 years of working with bees in mainly the southeastern United States, my aim in writing this book is to provide useful tips and techniques on bee keeping and production with special attention to its financial dimensions. Such information should be helpful to the advanced beginner as well as the experienced professional. However, since all beekeeping is local, some of these tips and techniques may not work in every area. In addition, beekeeping finance should be understood to succeed in building and growing any beekeeping operation. Many bee businesses fail due to poor financial controls and planning. Successful bee keeping first requires a basic knowledge of bee biology and physiology. Once acquired, specific management and financial techniques may be applied. In other words, the beekeeper's management must support the bees' natural biology. If the beekeeper does not do this, he will lose his bees, and everything else will be for naught. Once a bee keeper understands the bees' biology, the current management techniques should be examined for financial efficiency. Optimizing your beekeeping finance is critical for operating a profitable honey bee operation. We are competing not only with domestic United States beekeepers, but also overseas beekeepers. The competition scene is different for honey production than pollination. Honey production has much more overseas competition, whereas pollination is more domestic. There are many small honey producers that compete with local honey that is in demand. Likewise, much pollination is local also, with smaller acreages.

Book excerpt: “The most lucid call to action ever written about land-based beekeeping” from the author of The Backyard Beekeeper (Tammy Horn, author of Bees in America and Beeconomy). Backyard beekeepers everywhere agree: a successful colony is a thing of beauty. Thousands of beekeepers have started beekeeping thanks to Kim Flottum’s first book, The Backyard Beekeeper, and they have added to their repertoire of skills with The Backyard Beekeeper’s Honey Handbook. Now, Better Beekeeping answers the question, “What do I do now that I’m a beekeeper?” This book takes serious beekeepers past the beginning stages and learning curves and offers solutions and rewards for keeping bees a better way. Better queens, better winters, better food, and better bees await any beekeeper willing to take on the challenge of having the right number of bees, of the right age, in the right place, in the right condition, at the right time. “There are numerous beekeeping books on the shelves that instruct on ‘how to,’ but Better Beekeeping is a book that explores ‘why to,’ which is essential for this ever-changing world of beekeeping today.” —Jennifer Berry, research coordinator at the University of Georgia’s Honey Bee Research Lab, commercial queen, and columnist for Bee Culture magazine
