That fact is not being lost on leaders of industries that might profit from understanding this wider range of beauty, as well as playing to it. In this book, medical anthropologist Eric Bailey introduces and explains the self-acceptance and body image satisfaction of African Americans, and traces how that has spurred changes in industry. His book fills the void of scientific evidence to enhance the understanding of African Americans' perceptions related to body image and beauty—and is the first to document these issues from the perspective of an African American male. This is because overweight, like beauty, can be in the eye of the beholder. Most research studies investigating attitudes about body image and body type among African Americans have shown they are more satisfied with their bodies than are their white counterparts. Most black women, for example, are of course concerned with how they look, but do not judge themselves in terms of their weight and do not believe they are valued mostly on the basis of their bodies. Black teen girls most often say being thick and curvaceous with large hips and ample thighs is seen as the most desirable body shape. Thus, there appears to be a wider range of acceptable body shapes and weights, and a more flexible standard of attractiveness, among black Americans as compared to whites. That fact is not lost on leaders of industries that might profit from understanding this wider range of beauty, as well as playing to it. Voluptuous supermodel Tyra Banks is just one African American who's broken the mold in that industry. The effects have been seen right down to department and local clothes stores, where lines of larger and plus-size fashions are expanding, becoming more colorful and more ornate. In the fitness industry, health gurus Madonna Grimes and Billy Blanks have been revolutionizing how people get fit and how fitness needs to be redeveloped for the African American population. Advertising has taken a similar turn, not the least manifestation of which were the major campaigns Dove and Nike ran in 2005 with plus-sized actresses (who continue to appear in promotions for both companies). In movies and on television shows, the African American beautiful body image has followed suit. Specifically, this study examined how Black women define beauty by means of variables such as body shape, skin complexion, and hair texture; whether African American women ages 18-30 compared themselves to media images; and if so, did comparison to these media images impact African American women's body satisfaction. In addition, this study explored if African American women felt pressure to adopt beauty standards attributed to the dominant culture, as well as the role of racial identity in forming beauty standards and social comparison behavior. Twelve African American women were interviewed and findings of this exploratory research illustrated that the Black community has different standards than the traditional beauty standards of the U.S. Even though interviewees articulated standards of beauty for women in the Black community, there was a lack of uniformity in how these women felt about their own attractiveness: some identified with the Black beauty standards, while others did not. In addition, opinions varied regarding Black women's engagement in social comparison behavior and whether it was related to racial identity or body satisfaction. Limitations of study included: how Black women define social comparison behavior and racial identity, self-identification of participants, and the lack of Caucasian women included in this study. However, this research still provided rich data exploring Black women's perceptions of beauty among other issues within the Black community. Future research is required to better understand influences shaping standards of beauty within this subculture of the United States and recommendations are provided in the last chapter.

Book excerpt: Self-esteem and body image disturbances prominently figure into many physical and psychological health disorders such as depression, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and chemical dependency. In Euro-American culture, media images of femininity and physical attractiveness reinforce generally held perceptions of the idealized female beauty as tall, white, slender, and often blond and blue eyed. The physical morphology of African-American women does not genetically "fit" this westernized standard of beauty with implications for their mental health. The socialization of African-American women in a culture that embraces a different ethnic standard of beauty influences their perceptions of how physically attractive they see themselves. This may affect their self-esteem and produce body image disturbances that put them at risk for mental health problems. Many of these women seek emotional healing and a sense of empowerment from the mental health care system. Mental health professionals must consider that gender and racial influences, embedded in a Eurocentric aesthetic, play a significant role in providing culturally competent mental health care. Dimensional analysis was used in this grounded theory study to produce theoretical understandings of these societal and psychological issues. The Psychological Integration of the Afrocentric-Self is the central dimension that creates an understanding of how many African-American women resist a Eurocentric aesthetic and develop their own perceptions of physical attractiveness. Linked dimensions included the legacies of slavery and resistance that influenced the roles of the family, society and the media on the self-esteem and body images of African-American women. Conducting this research from a Black feminist perspective provided an avenue for these participants to share their experiences of racism, sexism, and classism in this society and to surface how they resist this oppression. The self-defined standpoint shared by each participant was deemed valid knowledge because it was "her truth" and a true expression of her experiences in the context of her life. A complex, multi-dimensional way of knowing was generated through the voices of these participants. The application of this new understanding to clinical practice in mental health settings is beneficial to the researcher, African-American women, the mental health community, and society.

In its extreme sense, those who are the “best looking” are provided opportunities to exploit their features, in careers like acting and modeling. But what is the extent of how much attractiveness can affect everyday life? Studies suggest it can bias the way we are treated in the workplace, in school, in court, and in our personal lives like how much a person is paid attention to in their social circle, and the way they are treated in romantic relationships. The questions I would like to answer are broad and may be different depending on the sources. To break down my research, I will first attempt to study how physical attractiveness is measured. From my readings so far, many have studied facial symmetry, length of the nose, height, and in women especially, their body mass index and hip-to-waist ratio. Age, race and gender also seem to affect who someone thinks is attractive. For example, a male's perception of female attractiveness sometimes differs from a female's, and an ideal body shape and weight is different between African Americans and Caucasians. Next I will investigate some of the most important aspects of our lives that are affected because of our looks. Studies have suggested more attractive people not only more likely to find employment, but they also earn higher incomes and may move up the career ladder more easily. It is also theorized that attractive people are simply thought of as being more intellectually competent. Disparities in compensation have been studied closely, with one study examining the influence of gender and attractiveness in ultimatum games. Starting in school, a teacher forms expectations based on how attractive a child is and in turn the child's behavior will be shaped. In a study where young children rated popularity among their peers, the unattractive kids were less popular. In a group of friends, an attractive person will have more influence on and respect from the others, and this pattern may be more apparent in female groups; In one study, an opinion made by an attractive female was more likely to be agreed upon than when made by a female less attractive. When making marriage choices, attractiveness and education play important roles, but the degree of their importance are different between genders. The question of how physical features will influence human behavior, interaction and attitude is intriguing and important. The answers can play a significant role in explaining inequality and discrimination in every society, but especially why inequality is so prevalent in America.
