Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a kid, David used to always look up to drug dealers, pimps, and players because he thought that they had everything—money, cars, and whores. Even though he wanted to be a lawyer, he wanted to live like them, but his mother was not having that kind of life for him and his big brother, Mike. She raised them like middle class even though they were poor. Growing up, David never saw drugs, pimps, or players. It was not until David turned eighteen that he started to see drugs and prostitution after some guy had left David for dead because they were jealous of him for going to school and working and even trying to get a scholarship to college to play basketball. But his so-called best friend put a stop to that, and David’s whole life had changed. He became that person that he looked up to when he was a kid. He became one of the biggest drug dealers in Detroit and the state of Michigan. He kept the bad-ass killers, the biggest drug dealers and the most scandalous thieves around him. He felt that if they can’t get past him, nobody could. David got married even though he was married to the game and lived that kind of lifestyle. His wife didn’t really know David was in the game until after the wedding. They had the house he bought, the cars they drove, and the jewelry they wore. That’s when David started noticing her stealing money and depositing it into her own private credit union. He thought that she was putting it away for a rainy day, so he never said anything. It seemed like everybody was trying to steal from him—his family, his best friend, everybody except for his mother and father. But this was David’s way of keeping up with the game. It was David’s way of practicing for the people that were not family or friends. The people that were close to David wanted to bring him down and take over his little cartel. And his cousin did bring him down, sending David to federal prison. This story details the life of David Dean.

Book excerpt: Dismantled is an accessible, critical look at the devolution of local power in the Detroit public school system. The author examines the rise of charter schools and other private enterprises, the eclipse of control from local actors to new players and influences, and the invaluable lessons the experience holds for urban school systems nationwide. Kang provides a compelling narrative of this shift in power beginning in the 1980s and leading to the breakup of Detroit Public Schools in 2016, and concludes with a discussion on the implications and dilemmas of regime change. The text looks at such questions as: What happens when local actors no longer have a voice in what happens to their schools? What are the consequences when teachers and administrators cede control to private interests and cease to participate in decisionmaking? What are some ways to redirect public schooling towards democracy in the aftermath of dismantling the Progressive Era system? Book Features: Examines how a series of policies dismantled the Detroit Public Schools, resulting in new educational characteristics such as the marketization and privatization of schooling. Offers an historical perspective on market-based reform, including why and how race and politics serve as barriers to reform. Explains the role and influence of Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos in the Detroit events. Provides a framework from which to envision the next steps for public education in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: Preceding the end of a previous relationship gone sour with Ex Terrell Marshall, Jeremiah Johnson throws his dating hat back into the dating game arena. His desire to not give-up on love in the same-gender loving community was considered special by some, and yet rare for many. Still, nothing could fizzle out Jeremiah's desire at obtaining an emotional healthy relationship again as he once had with Terrell and his Ex-girlfriend, and now best friend Kelly Owen. Yes, Jeremiah once dated Kelly until the day she discovered the facts concerning Jeremiah's sexuality. But as time moved forward, so did the healing process for Jeremiah and Kelly. Forgiveness was a given. However, at the zenith of his career, Jeremiah meets the Man of his dreams; so at least he thought. Now, for the third time in recent years Jeremiah is at a crossroads, as dirty little secrets comes to surface. Shall he stay the course and wish for a better tomorrow? Will he bail like a slave running for freedom and refuge?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you remember the Kardiac Kids … the Dawgs … the old Stadium … Bernie and Marty and Ozzie … this book is for you! Like a Classic throwback jersey, it recalls favorite players and exciting moments from Cleveland Browns teams of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and more. They played it old-school. Doug Dieken set the NFL record for consecutive starts by a left tackle despite three knee surgeries, broken hands and thumbs, torn tendons, a broken arm and “a concussion or two. Maybe four or six. Hard to know.” Ozzie Newsome never expected to play tight end when he was drafted, then practically reinvented the position on his way to the Hall of Fame. Bernie Kosar carried a massive weight on his young shoulders as a hometown hero leading the Browns during years when the team offered a ray of hope to a downtrodden city. Earnest Byner and Kevin Mack together formed one powerhouse backfield and separately dealt admirably with adversity. Phil Dawson discovered that despite popularity and longevity, “Every kick could be your last.” Also includes Gregg Pruitt, Brian Sipe, Marty Schottenheimer, Reggie Langhorne, Brian Brennan, Bill Belichick, Tim Couch, Phil Dawson, and others. These insightful short profiles will entertain Browns fans of any vintage!

Book excerpt: “The life of a neurosurgeon isn’t an easy one, and Ben has been required to go above and beyond the call of duty almost constantly. The life of a neurosurgeon’s wife isn’t much easier. But it’s all been worth it. Together, we’ve been through poverty, tragedy, wealth, and joy, and we’ve had each other’s backs. I love that guy!” —CANDY CARSON Like most Americans, you might think of Ben Carson as a trailblazing brain surgeon and, in the last few years, as an outspoken commentator on national issues. But his wife of more than forty years knows him as so much more: a loving husband, a devoted father, a devout Christian, a committed philanthropist, and a fierce patriot. Now Candy Carson introduces us to the private side of a very public figure as she shares the inspiring story of their marriage and their family. Like her husband, Candy grew up in Detroit, one of five children of a teacher and a factory worker. Also like Ben, she overcame her humble background through determination, hard work, and perseverance, earning a scholarship to attend Yale University. In that strange new world she focused on her studies, her music, and her deepening spiritual life. She attended church with a handsome older student who liked to tease her, but never assumed he would be anything more than a friend to her. But Ben and Candy quickly became inseparable, and they married soon after she graduated, with Ben still in medical school, preparing for his career as a soon-to-be world-famous pediatric neurosurgeon. In A Doctor in the House, Candy reveals many stories that have never been told before, despite the media spotlight on Dr. Carson in recent years. She shows us what it was like when they moved to Baltimore to join the community centered around Johns Hopkins Hospital. She describes how their family evolved with the births of their three sons and the tragic miscarriage of their twins. She talks about the challenges of Ben’s twelve- to twenty-hour workdays, saving thousands of lives every year while Candy ran the household. She also addresses the prejudice they sometimes faced as African Americans, and how Ben’s calm, levelheaded approach made him a great problem solver at home and in their travels, just as he was in the operating room. Above all, she reveals her husband’s consistency as a believer: in God, in family, and in America. Having lived the American Dream, Ben believes every child from every background is capable of achieving it. That’s why he and Candy have been committed to educating and inspiring young people and over the past twenty years have awarded more than 6,700 students with scholarships through their Carson Scholars Fund. A Doctor in the House is a classic American love story—and that story is far from over. As Candy writes, “We don’t know what God has for us next, but we’re ready to follow. . . . As we head forward into the un-known once more, I thank God for putting us together."

Chicken Soup for the Father and Son Soul takes a peak into the lives of fathers and sons, sharing the important male milestones from birth through childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, the senior years, and every step in between. This is a celebration of how fathers and sons carry each other along life's journey. Share the story of one man who didn't think much of becoming a father until the day he laid eyes on his son, and how in a matter of moments his perspective on life and being a dad had profoundly changed forever, and the touching story of a young boy who finds the father he always longed for in a special stepdad, as well as the story of the love and respect between a father-in-law and son-in-law that appears when least expected. Readers will be inspired by the stories of sons looking up to their fathers and learning by example, and fathers recollecting their own childhoods and relationships with their own dads. These insightful stories show men and boys working through the ups and downs of life, learning as they go and becoming better because of their relationship with each other. These powerful and poignant stories are written from every point of view—fathers, sons, grandfathers, mothers, and wives—everyone who has been deeply touched by the father and son relationship.

Book excerpt: By reducing mathematical detail and focusing on real-world applications, this book provides engineers with an easy-to-understand overview of stochastic modeling. An entire chapter is included on how to set up the problem, and then another complete chapter presents examples of applications before doing any math. A previously unpublished computational method for solving equations related to Markov processes is added. The book shows how to add costs or revenues to the basic probability structures without much additional effort. In addition, numerous examples are included that show how the theory can be used. Engineers will also find explanations on how to formulate word problems into the models that the math worked on.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join local food aficionado Bill Loomis on a look back at the appetites, tastes, kitchens, parties, holidays and everyday meals that defined eating in Detroit, from the earliest days as a French village to the start of the twentieth century. Whether it's at a frontier farmers' market, a Victorian twelve-course children's birthday party replete with tongue sandwiches or a five-cent-lunch diner, food is a main ingredient in a community's identity and history. While showcasing favorite fare of the day, this book also explores historic foodways--how locals fished the Detroit River, banished flies from kitchens without screens and harvested frog legs with miniscule shotguns. Wedding feasts, pioneer grub, cooking classes and the thriftless '20s are all on the menu, too.
