In ancient times, they led soldiers on a suicide mission against an unstoppable Persian army and continued to work their magic on the battlefields of Rome. Now, in present times, the Marid Djinns turn their focus to other pressing concernslike young Banter Styles, for instance. Banter grows up detesting his super rich father and extravagant life of privilege. When he is attacked one day, he realizes the necessity for protection and studies weapons and self-defense instead of the family business. He is haunted by strange dreams that a wise woman helps him solve. Eventually, his true purpose is revealed as he faces the three mythological Marid Djinns, rediscovering who he is and his potential. With their help, Banter can put his enemies underground, but the Marid Djinns wield great power with zero conscience. Book Synopsis The Pragmatics of Irony and Banter by : Manuel Jobert
Download or read book The Pragmatics of Irony and Banter written by Manuel Jobert and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pragmatics of Irony and Banter is the first book-length study analysing irony and banter together. This approach, inherited from Geoffrey Leech’s research, implies that the two notions are intrinsically related. In this thought-provoking volume, the various contributors (linguists, stylisticians, discourse analysts and literary scholars), while not necessarily agreeing on every aspect of this theoretical premise, discuss and develop the idea. In turn, they consider the workings of these two discursive practices in various corpora (face-to-face or digitally-mediated interactions, novels, comedy shows, etc.) thus providing a wealth of examples and case studies. This well-balanced positioning helps the reader to develop a better understanding of these complex discursive practices that play a crucial part in everyday interaction. Steering a course between traditional perspectives and new theoretical approaches, this innovative and exciting way of looking at irony and banter will no doubt open new avenues for research.

Book Synopsis Boys Love Media in Thailand by : Thomas Baudinette
Download or read book Boys Love Media in Thailand written by Thomas Baudinette and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years, the Thai popular culture landscape has radically transformed due to the emergence of Boys Love (BL) soap operas which celebrate the love between handsome young men. Boys Love Media in Thailand: Celebrity, Fans, and Transnational Asian Queer Popular Culture is the first book length study of this increasingly significant transnational pop culture phenomenon. Drawing upon six years of ethnographic research, the book reveals BL's impacts on depictions of same-sex desire in Thai media culture and the resultant mainstreaming of queer romance through new forms of celebrity and participatory fandom. The author explores how the rise of BL has transformed contemporary Thai consumer culture, leading to heterosexual female fans of male celebrities who perform homoeroticism becoming the main audience to whom Thai pop culture is geared. Through the case study of BL, this book thus also investigates how Thai media is responding to broader regional trends across Asia where the economic potentials of female and queer fans are becoming increasingly important. Baudinette ultimately argues that the center of queer cultural production in Asia has shifted from Japan to Thailand, investigating both the growing international fandom of Thailand's BL series as well as the influence of international investment into the development of these media. The book particularly focuses on specific case studies of the fandom for Thai BL celebrity couples in Thailand, China, the Philippines, and Japan to explore how BL series have transformed each of these national contexts' queer consumer cultures.
Book Synopsis Merchants of the Right by : Jennifer Carlson
Download or read book Merchants of the Right written by Jennifer Carlson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2025-02-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eye-opening portrait of the gun sellers who navigated the social turmoil leading up to the January 6 Capitol attack Gun sellers sell more than just guns. They also sell politics. Merchants of the Right sheds light on the unparalleled surge in gun purchasing during one of the most dire moments in American history, revealing how conservative political culture was galvanized amid a once-in-a-century pandemic, racial unrest, and a U.S. presidential election that rocked the foundations of American democracy. Drawing on a wealth of in-depth interviews with gun sellers across the United States, Jennifer Carlson takes readers to the front lines of the culture war over gun rights. Even though the majority of gun owners are conservative, new gun buyers are more likely to be liberal than existing gun owners. This posed a dilemma to gun sellers in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election: embrace these liberal customers as part of a new, perhaps post-partisan chapter in the American gun saga or double down on gun politics as conservative terrain. Carlson describes how gun sellers mobilized mainstays of modern conservative culture—armed individualism, conspiracism, and partisanship—as they navigated the uncertainty and chaos unfolding around them, asserting gun politics as conservative politics and reworking and even rejecting liberal democracy in the process. Merchants of the Right offers crucial lessons about the dilemmas confronting us today, arguing that we must reckon with the everyday politics that divide us if we ever hope to restore American democracy to health.
