Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides an overview of how the Bangladeshi leather value chain is organised and governed. It analyses how the leather processing and leather goods/footwear subsectors are integrated into the global market and to what extent informal arrangements including illicit practices are conducive to global market entry. Power relations are dissected along the value chain, in order to analyse how local producers adapt to upholding competitiveness. The results of the work show the need to devise upgrading strategies which pay heed to the reality of informal dynamics in a global value chain (GVC) to improve the local producers’ competitiveness. The GVC perspective was combined with considerations on upgrading, subcontracting, middlemen and informality to adequately analyse the complexity of the transactions in the chain. The data of this study are drawn from empirical field studies in Dhaka, Bangladesh and other sections of the international leather value chain during the time period of 2010 to 2014. A qualitative research approach was complemented with quantitative methods.

Book excerpt: Leather is a unique commodity that links grassroots villages with high societies and traditional practices with emerging technologies. For many developing countries, leather and leather manufacturers constitute an indispensable and dependable source for export trade and foreign exchange earnings. For Bangladesh, leather is a high priority industrial sector and footwear exports, an extreme focus area. Bangladesh has, just few decades since Independence, made significant gains from the leather trade, progressing from the status of an exporter of 90% plus raw hides and skins to that of an exporter and predominantly leather product manufacturer. However, there is little systematic research into this sector. This study is trying to address the research gap by seeking to understand the current status, problems and prospect of leather industry in Bangladesh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly globalized world with different stages of an industrial value chain being geographically dispersed, there is usually nothing wrong for a nation to feel satisfied with the manufacture and export of intermediate goods instead of ruing the missed opportunity of being the producer and exporter of higher value added final goods. The underlying assumption behind this logic can be interpreted by applying the seminal concept of Ricardo (1817) to the current industrial scenario under globalization: a country should specialize in those activities in the value chain in which it has a 'comparative advantage'. While this static view of comparative advantage based on natural endowments like raw materials and labour can be the starting point for an industry, the insight from the value chain literature -- “some activities add more value and are more lucrative than others” (Schmitz, 2005) -- prompts an assessment of the upgrading potential of the sector. From these perspectives, the growth of the Bangladeshi leather sector predominantly as an exporter of intermediate products like crust and finished leather seems to have the following implication: while the growth of the leather processing industry is a positive development for a country having abundant domestic supply of raw hide and skin (RHS), the leather sector of Bangladesh is actually losing huge value addition opportunity by exporting 50% of its leather in the form of semi-finished and finished leather while converting only the remaining 50% into footwear and leather products for low-end market (Bangladesh INSPIRED, 2013). A number of studies (Ahmed and Bakht, 2010; Bangladesh U.S. Business Council, 1990; Huq and Ahmed, 1990) have also recognized the scope of maximizing the potentials of the sector through better management of the sourcing channels of raw hide and skin and graduation from an exporter of intermediate goods to a manufacturer of final ones. Against this backdrop, this paper undertakes a secondary research and aims to unlock the upgrading potential of the Bangladeshi leather sector through a critical analysis of the key opportunities and bottlenecks along the value chain.

The country has a rich history, with ancient kingdoms and empires dating back to 1000 BCE. Modern Bangladesh was born in 1971, when it declared its independence from Pakistan following a bloody war. The country is characterized by its unique geography, with the Ganges Delta dominating its landscape. The delta is a vast network of interconnected rivers, canals, and marshes, and is the largest river delta in the world. Bangladesh is also one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with an average of over 1100 people per square kilometer. Despite being one of the poorest and most populous countries in the world, Bangladesh has made impressive progress in recent years. The country has a rapidly growing economy, fueled by the garment industry, which is worth over 30 billion USD annually. The government has also made significant strides in improving economic and social conditions for its citizens, with investments in education and healthcare, and initiatives to reduce poverty and increase employment. However, Bangladesh continues to face significant challenges, including political instability, corruption, and environmental degradation.

Book excerpt: Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal share many characteristics, including a common language, fertile land, abundant rainfall, year-round warmth, and a dense population. This book examines the progress made in crucial economic sectors that have paved the way for the development of Bangladesh and West Bengal. The book begins by describing how Bangladesh is moving toward achieving the status of a middle-income nation, and how West Bengal seems to have fallen into the trap of developmental experiments with different political ideologies over time. The book then compares the trajectory of development in various economic sectors of the two economies. In doing so, it covers social development, education, health care, food habits, cinema and theatre, and the entrepreneurship of both entities. The chapters take an empirical and descriptive approach to address various issues, analyse results, draw conclusions, and make policy suggestions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangladesh has transformed its economy over the last 2 decades, graduating to middle-income status as average annual growth remained strong at 5%–6%. The country’s goal to become an upper-middle-income country by 2021 will require even stronger annual growth of 7.5%–8%. This study finds that the most critical constraints to growth are (i) insufficient reliable energy supply, (ii) policies that indirectly stunt development of economic activities unrelated to ready-made garment exports, and (iii) insufficient security about property and land rights due in part to inadequate registry systems. If policies are designed to urgently tackle these constraints, Bangladesh will be free to harness its potential for inclusive and sustainable growth.
