Book excerpt: A PASSIONATE, AFFECTIONATE RECORD OF ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURES IN THE WORLD'S HOTTEST METROPOLIS Tourists come to Bangkok for many reasons—a sex change operation, a night with two prostitutes dressed as nuns, a stay in a luxury hotel. Lawrence Osborne comes for the cheap dentistry. Broke (but no longer in pain), he finds that he can live in Bangkok on a few dollars a day. And so the restless exile stays. Osborne's is a visceral experience of Bangkok, whether he's wandering the canals that fill the old city; dining at the No Hands Restaurant, where his waitress feeds him like a baby; or launching his own notably unsuccessful career as a gigolo. A guide without inhibitions, Osborne takes us to a feverish place where a strange blend of ancient Buddhist practice and new sexual mores has created a version of modernity only superficially indebted to the West. Bangkok Days is a love letter to the city that revived Osborne's faith in adventure and the world.

Book excerpt: In Bangkok, Alec Waugh has created the most fluent, truthful and affectionate portrait not only of the city, but also of the dynasty and culture which created it. Cutting through confusion and veiled mystery, he unravels the plots, coups, wars, assassinations, invasions and counter-coups of three hundred years of history as if it were this evening's street gossip. This loving description of the genius, fascination and enduring vitality of Thailand is told with Waugh's customary delight in life and sensual appreciation. The story is brought up-to-date with an afterword by Bruce Palling, former Times correspondent in Thailand.

Book excerpt: In this exotic retelling of the fairy tale of Bluebeard, a New Age thirty-something from California is swept off her feet by an enigmatic Thai millionaire and soon finds herself in Bangkok's brave new world of shamans, shopping malls, and high society serial killers. Originally written as a cliff-hanging series for Bangkok's The Nation newspaper, The Other City of Angels is a roller-coaster roman-a-clef that leapfrogs from genre to genre and culture to culture, turning the western preconception of Bangkok as a city "of temples and prostitutes" on its ear. A darkly comic odyssey populated with wild characters, with intimate glimpses into the eccentric antics of Asia's upper classes.

Book excerpt: "Using direct observations of the surrounding landscape and the tangibel artifacts of the city, its topography, streets, temples and other stunning architectural monuments, Barry Bell carries out a progressive investigation into Bangkok's urban sensibility and its central mythologies - the more mysterious perceptual realms of allusion and illusion, arguably the real Bangkok, implicitly present within its deceptive exterior. In spite of the knowledge that, for many people, order seems alien to the city, the author searches for conceptual coherence. He strives to link the city's hectic urban sensibility to its more elusive and hidden character - the dream of Bangkok that is prompted by angelic allusions"--P. [2] of cover.

Book excerpt: Why are cities centers of power? A sociological analysis of urban politics In this brilliant, very original survey of the politics and meanings of urban landscapes, leading sociologist Göran Therborn offers a tour of the world’s major capital cities, showing how they have been shaped by national, popular, and global forces. Their stories begin with the emergence of various kinds of nation-state, each with its own special capital city problematic. In turn, radical shifts of power have impacted on these cities’ development, in popular urban reforms or movements of protest and resistance; in the rise and fall of fascism and military dictatorships; and the coming and going of Communism. Therborn also analyzes global moments of urban formation, of historical globalized nationalism, as well as the cities of current global image capitalism and their variations of skyscraping, gating, and displays of novelty. Through a global, historical lens, and with a thematic range extending from the mutations of modernist architecture to the contemporary return of urban revolutions, Therborn questions received assumptions about the source, manifestations, and reach of urban power, combining perspectives on politics, sociology, urban planning, architecture, and urban iconography. He argues that, at a time when they seem to be moving apart, there is a strong link between the city and the nation-state, and that the current globalization of cities is largely driven by the global aspirations of politicians as well as those of national and local capital. With its unique systematic overview, from Washington, D.C. and revolutionary Paris to the flamboyant twenty- first-century capital Astana in Kazakhstan, its wealth of urban observations from all the populated continents, and its sharp and multi-faceted analyses, Cities of Power forces us to rethink our urban future, as well as our historically shaped present.

Book excerpt: Discussions on the global economy focus on the hyper-mobility of capital, the possibility of instantaneous transmission of information and money around the globe, the centrality of information outputs to our economic systems and emphasise the neutralisation of geography and of places. What is ignored, however, is that even the most advanced information industries need a material infrastructure of buildings and work processes, and considerable agglomeration, in order to operate in global markets. Further, the globalisation of economic activity has brought with it not only a vast dispersal of offices and factories, but also a growing importance of central functions to manage and coordinate such worldwide networks of activities. The development of global urban projects is one manifestation of this move towards centrality in urban situations. These large-scale urban projects are the result of governments' seeking competitive advantage in the global economy. They are critical components of a nation's global infrastructure. In the booming economies of the Asia Pacific Rim prior to the Asian Economic Crisis these urban developments were seen as key components of national economic policies. In their making they require a conscious effort to arrange material infrastructure and reinforce that there is a role for urban design in this making. Emerging Urbanity is an exploration of this role in nine global urban projects in the Asia Pacific Rim.

This book was released on 2002-10-07 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Sawasdee Khrap welcome to the kingdom of Thailand. A number of valid characterizations such as The Land of Smiles , The Land of Temples and Pagodas and Tropical Vacation Paradise describe Thailand at its best. In addition to these picturesque synonyms, the kingdom gained international recognition through its growing travel and hospitality industry. In 2001 Thailand once again booked the top spot as most preferred tourist destination in South East Asia as well as runner-up position in all of Asia, second only to China. When Muslim extremists hijacked four domestic U.S. flights and cowardly carried out the terrorist attack of 9-11 on the U.S.A., the global travel sector felt the direct impact of the terrorist attacks like no other industry. From one day to the other tourists decided to stay at or close to home and hotel rooms were left vacant. As major employer and source for foreign exchange earnings, Thailand s tourism industry was no exception to the threat. As the brutality and human tragedy of this incident will always be remembered, the following report will focus solely on the implications for the tourism and hospitality industry. In specific, the text will take an in-depth look at the development of the first class hotel market in Bangkok following the September attacks. The report looks at 14 top hotels of Bangkok and their performance from January 2000 to March 2002. Special attention lies on the seven months following the U.S.A. attacks in September 2001, whereas a full year comparison of 2000 and 2001 will also provide valid information. The tourism and hospitality industry is a major economic driving factor not only for Thailand, but also for many other Asian nations. Therefore, the beginning of this report deals with the regional development after the terrorist attacks. This way the reader will get an understanding of the current situation in Asia and the general impact of 9-11. After a general overview of Thailand, the first class hotel market of Bangkok will be analyzed by its occupancy, ADR and RevPar development. These performance related information create the backbone of this report and support further assumptions and findings. For validity reasons, the results are then compared to two independent surveys. The fourth section is made up of the changes in travel patterns, tourism demand and strategies, followed by a comparison of the two best performing individual hotels and their advantages over [...]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangkok Inside Out is unlike any other book on the Thai capital. It is an honest, humorous, contemporary snapshot of a 21st-Century Southeast Asian city bursting at the scams but plugging along nonetheless; of ordinary people in their urban landscape; of culture and pop culture. And it is hardly a typical 'portrait', because it tells the day-to-day truth about Bangkok--the proverbial Good, Bad, and Ugly. It provides insights into the chaotic reality of everyday life in the city rather than discussing floating markets or Patpong bars. Bangkok Inside Out quite literally turns Bangkok 'inside out', exposing the city piece by piece to the reader in a quirky, intelligent and accessible manner. It covers subjects like soi dogs, gem scams, karaoke bars, student cafes, motorcycle taxis, Seven-Eleven, urban elephants, sky train, luuk kreung (Eurasians), Chinatown, mobile phones, gambling, energy drinks, and lottery--the whole slew of topics that make Bangkok that it is. Like Bangkok itself, the book is packed with idiosyncrasies, inside scoops and quirky anecdotes. And it is illustrated with striking full color photos that visually present the Thai capital as never seen before. Bangkok Inside Out represents a new way of looking at contemporary Bangkok and Thailand. Existing books on Thailand tend to focus on traditional culture, history and landscapes, or on tired cliches and seedy accounts of the city's notorious nightlife. Bangkok Inside Out breaks new ground by addressing contemporary urban Thai culture at street level and offering entertaining insights into the colorful, complex reality of modern Bangkok life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first “urban century” in history has arrived: a majority of the world's population now resides in cities and their surrounding suburbs. Urban expansion marches on, and the planning and design of future cities requires attention to such diverse issues as human migration, public health, economic restructuring, water supply, climate and sea-level change, and much more. This important book draws on two decades of pioneering social and ecological studies in Baltimore to propose a new way to think about cities and their social, political, and ecological complexity. Readers will gain fresh perspectives on how to study, build, and manage cities in innovative and sustainable ways.
