Book excerpt: You have a story to tell, don't you? Or maybe you simply want to try your hand at fiction writing. Perhaps you've given it your best effort, but simply didn't have enough tools in your tool box to finish that first draft. Wherever you're at with this novel-writing thing, popular bloggers Stephanie Morrill, Jill Williamson, and Shannon Dittemore totally understand. They know it's hard to finish a first draft. To stay motivated until the end. To feel like a "real" writer. They know because they've been there too. In Go Teen Writers: Write Your Novel, you'll learn: There is no such thing as one right way to write a novel. How to take an idea and give it a beginning, middle, and end. What story structure means and how it strengthens a book. Different approaches to plotting a novel. How to develop characters worth reading about. Strategies for creating memorable storyworlds and settings. What theme is and how to use it to enrich your story. What to do when your first draft is finished. There's no doubt about it. Learning to write a novel from beginning to end is a challenge. But with this book as your guide, you'll see that when you're in possession of the right tools, you're capable of finishing what you start. You'll be empowered and encouraged-as if you had a writing coach (or three!) sitting alongside you.
Download or read book Ballads written by Richard Owens and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published by eth co-editor David Hadbawnik's habenicht press in 2012, Ballads uses the lyric form to explore the effects of global Capitalism from a sharp Marxist perspective. Recognizing the congruence between folk song circulation and the circulation of money, the "currency" of the ballad alongside supply-side economics, Owens hails Wordworth's Lyric Ballads experiment (undertaken at the dawn of England's Industrial Age) as one touchstone. But he also understands the built-in obsolescence of the form, its tendency to hearken back to imaginary origins. "[E]veryone has an idea they know what a ballad is," Owens writes in his "Working Notes." "It's this degraded thing shot through with a sense of pastness, cultural infancy and a charming but sometimes dangerous rusticity that needs to be carefully framed and reined." Thus Owens' Ballads playfully engage with language, figures, and forms from medieval and early modern England, with nods to the caesura-based, alliterative line, and Barbara Allan, Thomas the Rhymer, and Piers Plowman making appearances in the book's brief lyrics.

Book Synopsis Mexican Ballads, Chicano Poems by : José E. Limón
Download or read book Mexican Ballads, Chicano Poems written by José E. Limón and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1992-07-24 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexican Ballads, Chicano Poems combines literary theory with the personal engagement of a prominent Chicano scholar. Recalling his experiences as a student in Texas, José Limón examines the politically motivated Chicano poetry of the 60s and 70s. He bases his analyses on Harold Bloom's theories of literary influence but takes Bloom into the socio-political realm. Limón shows how Chicano poetry is nourished by the oral tradition of the Mexican corrido, or master ballad, which was a vital part of artistic and political life along the Mexican-U.S. border from 1890 to 1930. Limón's use of Bloom, as well as of Marxist critics Raymond Williams and Fredric Jameson, brings Chicano literature into the arena of contemporary literary theory. By focusing on an important but little-studied poetic tradition, his book challenges our ideas of the American canon and extends the reach of Hispanists and folklorists as well.

Book Synopsis The Ballad and Oral Literature by : Joseph Harris
Download or read book The Ballad and Oral Literature written by Joseph Harris and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis James Child, compiler and editor of English and Scottish Popular Ballads, established the scholarly study of folk ballads in the English-speaking world. His successors at Harvard University, notably George Lyman Kittredge, Milman Parry, and Albert B. Lord, discovered new ways of relating ideas about sung narrative to the study of epic poetry and what has come to be called - oral literature. In this volume, 16 scholars from Europe and the United States offer original essays in the spirit of these pioneers. The topics of their studies include well-known Child ballads in their British and American forms; aspects of the oral literatures of France, Ireland, Scandinavia, medieval England, ancient Greece, and modern Egypt; and recent literary ballads and popular songs. Many of the essays evince a concern with the theoretical underpinnings of the study of folklore and literature, orality and literacy; and as a whole the volume re-establishes the European ballad in the wider context of oral literature. Among the contributors are Albert B. Lord, Bengt R. Jonsson, Gregory Nagy, David Buchan, Vesteinn Olason, and Karl Reichl.
