Book excerpt: Here together for the first time in a convenient ebook bundle, the first three books in New York Times bestselling author Lisa Kleypas' beloved series featuring the Travis family: Blue-Eyed Devil Hardy Cates is a self-made millionaire who comes from the wrong side of the tracks. He's made enemies in the rough-and-tumble ride to the top of Houston's oil industry. He's got hot blood in his veins. And vengeance on his mind. Haven Travis refuses to set out on the path her wealthy family has chosen for her. But when Haven marries a man her family disapproves of, her life is set on a new and dangerous course. Two years later, Haven comes home, determined to guard her heart. And Hardy Cates, a family enemy, is the last person she needs darkening her door or setting her soul on fire. Smooth Talking Stranger Jack Travis leads the uncomplicated life of a millionaire Texas playboy. But no one has ever truly touched his heart or soul. Until one day, a woman appears on his doorstep with fury on her face and a baby in her arms. It seems Jack is the father and this woman is the baby's aunt. The real mother has abandoned the child to her more responsible sister. And now, Jack is being called upon to take responsibility for the first time in his life. Sugar Daddy Liberty Jones has dreams and determination that will take her far away from Welcome, Texas. Hardy Cates' ambitions are bigger than Welcome, and Liberty Jones is a complication he doesn't need. But something magical and potent draws them to each other, in a dangerous attraction that is stronger than both of them. Hardy leaves town to pursue his plans and soon Liberty finds herself under the spell of a billionaire tycoon. But the relationship goes deeper than people think, and Liberty begins to discover secrets about her own family's past. Two men. One woman. A choice that can make her or break her. A woman you'll root for every step of the way. A love story you'll never forget.

Book Synopsis Signs of Cherokee Culture by : Margaret Bender
Download or read book Signs of Cherokee Culture written by Margaret Bender and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive fieldwork in the community of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in western North Carolina, this book uses a semiotic approach to investigate the historic and contemporary role of the Sequoyan syllabary--the written system for representing the sounds of the Cherokee language--in Eastern Cherokee life. The Cherokee syllabary was invented in the 1820s by the respected Cherokee Sequoyah. The syllabary quickly replaced alternative writing systems for Cherokee and was reportedly in widespread use by the mid-nineteenth century. After that, literacy in Cherokee declined, except in specialized religious contexts. But as Bender shows, recent interest in cultural revitalization among the Cherokees has increased the use of the syllabary in education, publications, and even signage. Bender also explores the role played by the syllabary within the ever more important context of tourism. (The Eastern Cherokee Band hosts millions of visitors each year in the Great Smoky Mountains.) English is the predominant language used in the Cherokee community, but Bender shows how the syllabary is used in special and subtle ways that help to shape a shared cultural and linguistic identity among the Cherokees. Signs of Cherokee Culture thus makes an important contribution to the ethnographic literature on culturally specific literacies.

Be empowered to have faith, set goals, and take action . . . to stay the course and enjoy many more decades of a joyful, blessed, and healthy life. With so many “experts” touting different approaches to raising thriving children, how do you know which is the best one? Dr. Rhonda Spencer-Hwang, professor of public health at Loma Linda University and mom of three, had the same question. As a member of a community known worldwide for its health and longevity, often referred to as a Blue Zone, she decided to study the area’s many centenarians to find out what they—or their parents—did right in childhood to make them so resilient to stress, disease, and the adversities of life. In Raising Resilient Kids, Dr. Spencer-Hwang reveals the intriguing findings from her research and offers eight principles for raising happier, healthier children who are equipped to flourish despite life’s inevitable adversities. Readers of Raising Resilient Kids will learn how to: Empower children with determination, motivation, and empathy Win over picky eaters and others who resist new routines Reduce negative stress and boost happiness Instill the values that motivate children to serve and help others Enhance academic performance through healthy habits Help kids begin to explore their passions and purpose.
