Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For the span of one hundred years, Peter, Theodore, and J. Fred. Wolle formed an American musical dynasty. While each musician was rooted in the Moravian musical tradition, particularly through the innovations of The Bach Choir of Bethlehem, their influence extended beyond the Moravian Church and became a major force in Bach performance in America. The early characterization of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania as the American Bayreuth remains an apt one to this day." "The musical tradition that shaped these musicians was centered in Nazareth (1740) and Bethlehem (1742), the first Moravian communities founded in Pennsylvania. In addition to schools for young children, the Moravians established academies for young men in Nazareth and for young women in Bethlehem. These academies became well known for their excellence. Music was central in both schools, and each had faculties of fine musicians trained in Europe who transplanted European musical excellence to American soil. As a result, during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, each academy provided a music education unsurpassed in America. In addition, each institution was closely attached to the vital music-making that pervaded all Moravian communities. Thus, this deep reverence for music in Nazareth and Bethlehem nourished and trained many fine musicians. For generations members of the same families sang, played musical instruments, and composed sacred music together." "This book is also about Moravian cultural patterns that produced so many musically productive men, women, and children who still shape life in the city of Bethlehem."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Demonstrates the existence of public space catalysts, as well as the need for their presence for an expectant or indifferent place to be activated. This work -- which understands that the city, now and always, has had and must have public spaces of intensity -- proposes urban catalysts as agents that are capable of activating a place that was previously indifferent. The comparative work of historical and recent cases, developed by research and drawings, has allowed us to discover that the vivid public spaces of identity and reference have been formed due to the urban effect caused by these agents that we call "catalysts." Manuel Bailo's work includes a wide range of projects, ranging from urban scale to interiorism. It has been widely published and presented with awards. Co-published with University of Virginia: School of Architecture.

Book excerpt: An extensively revised and updated edition of a bestselling classic on modern architecture and its origins by Kenneth Frampton. Kenneth Frampton’s highly acclaimed survey of modern architecture and its origins has been a classic since it first appeared in 1980. Starting with the cultural developments since 1750 that drove the modern movement, moving through the creation of modern architecture, and exploring the effects of globalization and the phenomenon of international celebrity architects, this book is the definitive history of modern architecture. For this extensively revised and updated fifth edition of Modern Architecture, Frampton added new chapters exploring the ongoing modernist tradition in architecture while also examining the varied responses to the urgent need to build more sustainably and create structures that will withstand changing climates. This new edition features completely redesigned interiors and an updated and expanded bibliography, making this volume more indispensable than ever.

Gausa, M. Cervello and M. Pla. Introduction by Mihail Moldoveanu. Text by Kenneth Frampton. Barcelona is among the world's most architecturally important cities, and this book is clear evidence why. Documenting the period from 1860 to the present, this study covers the famous works of Gaudi, of Jujol, and of Mies van der Rohe's Barcellona Pavillion proposal. Rationalist works from the fifties, large housing developments from the 1970s, the buildings from the Olympics: all of Barcelona's triumphs are covered here in detail.
