Book excerpt: "The Bank of Credit and Commerce International remains today, 30 years after its founding, a byword for corruption, influence peddling, bribery, crony capitalism, phony audits, money laundering, and worse. It managed to stave off crises with "too big to fail" arguments and friends in high places. Here, in full documentary splendor, we see the genesis of the term "bankster" and the stunning failure of the same roster of government agencies caught napping before the panic of 2008. This December 1992 document is the final draft of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee report. It was released by Congress but co-author Sen. Hank Brown, reportedly acting at the behest of Henry Kissinger, pressed for the deletion of a few passages, particularly re: Kissinger Associates. As a result, the final hardcopy version of the report, as published originally by the Government Printing Office, is less complete than the version you now hold in your hands. Long out of print and available only electronically, this report is here presented in a new edition designed for readability and easy reference." -- Page [4] of cover.

Book excerpt: "[The author] has meticulously documented a twin threat to Pakistan's very existence in his excellent study on the drug trap and interrelated debt trap. His clearly stated intention and obligation as an advocate of a strong civil society is to alert his fellow countrymen against Pakistan's journey from "Kingdom of Heroin" to "Bankrupt-nuclear State." Dr. Ikramul Haq's concern, however, is not only confined to his home country Pakistan. On the one hand, he thoroughly analyses how military and civilian leaders have led their country into a crippling debt trap and which the role "narco-money" has played in this power game. On the other hand, he painstakingly reveals the external factors which have facilitated and accelerated Pakistan's fall into the debt trap. He rightly argues that Pakistan's ill-fated situation illustrates the deep problems of poor countries in general. Everyone will agree with his strong appeal that in the "global village" it is the obligation of the rich countries to support the poorest ones in getting out of their debt trap"--P. x.

Book excerpt: The collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, the unification of Germany, the withdrawal of Soviet troops, the possible disintegration of the Soviet Union, disengagement of the United States and creation of a federal Europe - all this has changed the security context in Europe and stimulated a Europe-wide debate about the future. Deep questions about the nature of security itself have been raised. This book will add fuel to the debate.

This book was released on 1991-10-01 with total page 1070 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the "Inter-American Yearbook on Human Rights," like the volumes that precede it, includes information concerning the activities of the Organization of American States in the promotion and protection of human rights. It begins with the composition of the Commission and Court, including the biographies of the members, 1988 activities of each body, reproductions of resolutions and reports by the Commission and historic correspondences and decisions by the Court. Also included is an update on the status of the American Convention on Human Rights, which reports the relation of each country to that instrument, followed by resolutions adopted in 1988 by the OAS General Assembly. The year 1988 distinguished itself particularly because the Inter-American Court of Human Rights made its first decision on a contentious case, the "Velasquez Rodriguez" case (Honduras). This historic decision is reproduced in Part Three of this volume. Another important 1988 development in the Inter-American system was the Protocol of San Salvador, or Additional Protocol to the American Convention on Human Rights for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, reproduced in Part Four. Also included, in its entirety, is a report on the human rights situation in Haiti, a report requested by the Organization of American States Permanent Council in Resolution 502. The "Inter-American Yearbook on Human Rights" is completely bilingual (English and Spanish).

Book excerpt: For some, Tahiti, New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna are idyllic tropical islands with a French flavour, while for others they represent continuing French colonialism, thwarted independence movements and nuclear-testing. This book looks at the realities of the French territories in Oceania, and the former Franco-British condominium of the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu), as well as changing French policy in the region. This study is based on published sources as well as archival material and interviews, and is a sequel to the highly praised The French Presence in the South Pacific, 1842-1940.
