Environmental concerns, particularly reagarding improvement of ar quality have been important in recent years, Reduced emmissions are directly related to changes in lubricant specifications and quality, and the second edition of the Automotive Lubricants Reference Book reflects the urgency of such matters by including updated and expanded detail. This second edition also considers the recent phenomenon of increased consolidation within the oil and petroleum additive arenas, which has resulted in fewer poeple for research, devlopment, and implementation, along with fewer competing companies. After reviewing the first edition the authors have fully reviewed and updated the information to fit in with the changes in technology and markets. Chapters include, Introduction and Fundamentals Constituents of Modern Lubricants Crankcase Oil Testing Crankcase Oil Quality Levels and Formulations Practical Experiences with Lubricant Problems Performance Levels, Classification, Specification, and Approval of Engine Lubricants. Other Lubricants for Road Vehicles Other Specialized Oils of Interest Blending, Storage, Purchase, and Use Safety Health, and the Environment The Future.

Book excerpt: This Standard specifies the requirements, test methods, inspection rules, mark, packaging, transportation and storage of heavy duty gear oils for automobile (GL-5). Such gear oils are modulated by adding various additives to the base oil of refined mineral oil, synthetic oil, or the mixture of refined mineral oil and synthetic oil. This Standard is applicable to heavy duty gear oils for automobile (GL-5). This product is mainly applicable to automobile drive axle, especially hyperbolic gear that is adopted under the working condition of high-speed impact load, high-speed low torque and lowspeed high torque.

Book excerpt: The gear lubricants covered by this standard exceed American Petroleum Institute (API) Service Classification API GL-5 and are intended for hypoid type, automotive gear units, operating under conditions of high-speed/shock load and low-speed/high-torque. These lubricants may be appropriate for other gear applications where the position of the shafts relative to each other and the type of gear flank contact involve a large percentage of sliding contact. Such applications typically require extreme pressure (EP) additives to prevent the adhesion and subsequent tearing away of material from the loaded gear flanks. These lubricants are not appropriate for the lubrication of worm gears.Appendix A is a mandatory part of this standard. The information contained in Appendix A is intended for the demonstration of compliance with the requirements of this standard and for listing on the Qualified Products List (QPL) administered by the Lubricant Review Institute (LRI). Appendix A contains a summary of key qualification requirements. A complete listing of qualification requirements and procedures can be found in the Program Document (PD4000) Gear Lubricant Review Program available from the Performance Review Institute, Attn: Secretary of the LRI, 161 Thorn Hill Road, Warrendale, PA 15086, (724) 772-1616 or at www.pri-network.com. Manufacturers of commercial and military driveline components rely on this industry standard to define a minimum level of performance for use in the qualification of lubricating oils that are used in their equipment. SAE J2360 provides a consistent set of requirements for such qualification processes.
