Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a collection of thoroughly reviewed revised full papers on automated deduction in classical, modal, and many-valued logics, with an emphasis on first-order theories. Five invited papers by prominent researchers give a consolidated view of the recent developments in first-order theorem proving. The 14 research papers presented went through a twofold selection process and were first presented at the International Workshop on First-Order Theorem Proving, FTP'98, held in Vienna, Austria, in November 1998. The contributed papers reflect the current status in research in the area; most of the results presented rely on resolution or tableaux methods, with a few exceptions choosing the equational paradigm.

Some have philosophers as their intended audience, some mathematicians, some computer scientists. Although there is a common core to all such books they will be very dif ferent in emphasis, methods, and even appearance. This book is intended for computer scientists. But even this is not precise. Within computer sci ence formal logic turns up in a number of areas, from program verification to logic programming to artificial intelligence. This book is intended for computer scientists interested in automated theorem proving in classical logic. To be more precise yet, it is essentially a theoretical treatment, not a how-to book, although how-to issues are not neglected. This does not mean, of course, that the book will be of no interest to philosophers or mathematicians. It does contain a thorough presentation of formal logic and many proof techniques, and as such it contains all the material one would expect to find in a course in formal logic covering completeness but not incompleteness issues. The first item to be addressed is, what are we talking about and why are we interested in it. We are primarily talking about truth as used in mathematical discourse, and our interest in it is, or should be, self-evident. Truth is a semantic concept, so we begin with models and their properties. These are used to define our subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing an in-depth introduction to fundamental classical and non-classical logics, this textbook offers a comprehensive survey of logics for computer scientists. Logics for Computer Science contains intuitive introductory chapters explaining the need for logical investigations, motivations for different types of logics and some of their history. They are followed by strict formal approach chapters. All chapters contain many detailed examples explaining each of the introduced notions and definitions, well chosen sets of exercises with carefully written solutions, and sets of homework. While many logic books are available, they were written by logicians for logicians, not for computer scientists. They usually choose one particular way of presenting the material and use a specialized language. Logics for Computer Science discusses Gentzen as well as Hilbert formalizations, first order theories, the Hilbert Program, Godel's first and second incompleteness theorems and their proofs. It also introduces and discusses some many valued logics, modal logics and introduces algebraic models for classical, intuitionistic, and modal S4 and S5 logics. The theory of computation is based on concepts defined by logicians and mathematicians. Logic plays a fundamental role in computer science, and this book explains the basic theorems, as well as different techniques of proving them in classical and some non-classical logics. Important applications derived from concepts of logic for computer technology include Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering. In addition to Computer Science, this book may also find an audience in mathematics and philosophy courses, and some of the chapters are also useful for a course in Artificial Intelligence.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of contributions honouring Arnon Avron’s seminal work on the semantics and proof theory of non-classical logics. It includes presentations of advanced work by some of the most esteemed scholars working on semantic and proof-theoretical aspects of computer science logic. Topics in this book include frameworks for paraconsistent reasoning, foundations of relevance logics, analysis and characterizations of modal logics and fuzzy logics, hypersequent calculi and their properties, non-deterministic semantics, algebraic structures for many-valued logics, and representations of the mechanization of mathematics. Avron’s foundational and pioneering contributions have been widely acknowledged and adopted by the scientific community. His research interests are very broad, spanning over proof theory, automated reasoning, non-classical logics, foundations of mathematics, and applications of logic in computer science and artificial intelligence. This is clearly reflected by the diversity of topics discussed in the chapters included in this book, all of which directly relate to Avron’s past and present works. This book is of interest to computer scientists and scholars of formal logic.

Book excerpt: This monograph on classical logic presents fundamental concepts and results in a rigorous mathematical style. Applications to automated theorem proving are considered and usable programs in Prolog are provided. This material can be used both as a first text in formal logic and as an introduction to automation issues, and is intended for those interested in computer science and mathematics at the beginning graduate level. The book begins with propositional logic, then treats first-order logic, and finally, first-order logic with equality. In each case the initial presentation is semantic: Boolean valuations for propositional logic, models for first-order logic, and normal models when equality is added. This defines the intended subjects independently of a particular choice of proof mechanism. Then many kinds of proof procedures are introduced: tableau, resolution, natural deduction, Gentzen sequent and axiom systems. Completeness issues are centered in a model existence theorem, which permits the coverage of a variety of proof procedures without repetition of detail. In addition, results such as compactness, interpolation, and the Beth definability theorem are easily established.Implementations of tableau theorem provers are given in Prolog, and resolution is left as a project for the student.

Book excerpt: Interest in computer applications has led to a new attitude to applied logic in which researchers tailor a logic in the same way they define a computer language. In response to this attitude, this text for undergraduate and graduate students discusses major algorithmic methodologies, and tableaux and resolution methods. The authors focus on first-order logic, the use of proof theory, and the computer application of automated searches for proofs of mathematical propositions. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed exposition of one of the most practical and popular methods of proving theorems in logic, called Natural Deduction. It is presented both historically and systematically. Also some combinations with other known proof methods are explored. The initial part of the book deals with Classical Logic, whereas the rest is concerned with systems for several forms of Modal Logics, one of the most important branches of modern logic, which has wide applicability.
