Book excerpt: The book deals with the representation in series form of compact linear operators acting between Banach spaces, and provides an analogue of the classical Hilbert space results of this nature that have their roots in the work of D. Hilbert, F. Riesz and E. Schmidt. The representation involves a recursively obtained sequence of points on the unit sphere of the initial space and a corresponding sequence of positive numbers that correspond to the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the map in the Hilbert space case. The lack of orthogonality is partially compensated by the systematic use of polar sets. There are applications to the p-Laplacian and similar nonlinear partial differential equations. Preliminary material is presented in the first chapter, the main results being established in Chapter 2. The final chapter is devoted to the problems encountered when trying to represent non-compact maps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to the study of spear operators, that is, bounded linear operators G between Banach spaces X and Y satisfying that for every other bounded linear operator T:X → Y there exists a modulus-one scalar ω such that ǁ G+ωTǁ = 1 + ǁTǁ. This concept extends the properties of the identity operator in those Banach spaces having numerical index one. Many examples among classical spaces are provided, being one of them the Fourier transform on L1. The relationships with the Radon-Nikodým property, with Asplund spaces and with the duality, and some isometric and isomorphic consequences are provided. Finally, Lipschitz operators satisfying the Lipschitz version of the equation above are studied. The book could be of interest to young researchers and specialists in functional analysis, in particular to those interested in Banach spaces and their geometry. It is essentially self-contained and only basic knowledge of functional analysis is needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes a collection of research articles in Functional Analysis, celebrating the occasion of Manuel Valdivia's sixtieth birthday. The papers included in the volume are based on the main lectures presented during the international functional analysis meeting held in Peñíscola (Valencia, Spain) in October 1990. During his career, Valdivia has made contributions to a wide variety of areas of Functional Analysis and his work has had a profound impact. A thorough appreciation of Valdivia's work is presented in J. Horváth's article. In honor of Valdivia's achievements, this volume presents more than twenty-five papers on topics related to his research (Banach spaces, operator ideals, tensor products, Fréchet, (DF) and (LF) spaces, distribution theory, infinite holomorphy etc.). While the majority of papers are research articles, survey articles are also included. The book covers a broad spectrum of interests in today's Functional Analysis and presents new results by leading specialists in the field.

Book excerpt: Completely continuous operators on a Hilbert space or even on a Banach space have received considerable attention in the last fifty years. Their study was usually confined to special completely continuous operators or to the discovery of properties common to all of them (for instance, that every such operator admits a proper invariant subspace). On the other hand, interest in spaces of completely continuous operators is comparatively new. Some results of this type may be found implicit in the early work of E. SCHMIDT. Other results are "generally known" and cannot be found explicitly in print. One of the interesting and relatively new results states that modulo the language of BANACH (that is, up to equivalence) the space of all operators on a Hilbert space f> is the second conjugate of the space of all completely continuous operators on f>. The study of spaces of completely continuous operators on a perfectly general Banach space involves many difficulties. Some stem, for instance, from the unsolved problem whether a completely continuous operator on a perfectly general Banach space is always approximable in bound by operators of finite rank. The answer is affirmative in all the special Banach spaces considered. An affirmative answer to the above problem is the ultimate desideratum - it ~ould simplify the theory considerably. A negative answer, however, would be equally interesting (although for us not so useful), since it would settle negatively the open "basis problem".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 22 articles on topics of current interest in functional analysis, operator theory and related areas. Some of the papers have connections with complex function theory in one and several variables, probability theory and mathematical physics. Surveys of some areas of recent progress in functional analysis are given and related new results are presented. The topics covered in this volume supplement the discussion of modern functional analysis in the previous Proceedings volumes. Together with the previous volumes, the reader obtains a good impression of many aspects of present-day functional analysis and its applications. Parts of this volume can be used profitably in advanced seminars and courses in functional analysis.

Book excerpt: This volume contains proceedings of the conference on Trends in Banach Spaces and Operator Theory, which was devoted to recent advances in theories of Banach spaces and linear operators. Included in the volume are 25 papers, some of which are expository, while others present new results. The articles address the following topics: history of the famous James' theorem on reflexivity, projective tensor products, construction of noncommutative $L p$-spaces via interpolation, Banach spaces with abundance of nontrivial operators, Banach spaces with small spaces of operators, convex geometry of Coxeter-invariant polyhedra, uniqueness of unconditional bases in quasi-Banach spaces, dynamics of cohyponormal operators, and Fourier algebras for locally compact groupoids. The book is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in Banach spaces and operator theory and their applications.

Book excerpt: Written by a distinguished specialist in functional analysis, this book presents a comprehensive treatment of the history of Banach spaces and (abstract bounded) linear operators. Banach space theory is presented as a part of a broad mathematics context, using tools from such areas as set theory, topology, algebra, combinatorics, probability theory, logic, etc. Equal emphasis is given to both spaces and operators. The book may serve as a reference for researchers and as an introduction for graduate students who want to learn Banach space theory with some historical flavor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides a systematic treatment of the abstract theory of adjoint semigroups. After presenting the basic elementary results, the following topics are treated in detail: The sigma (X, X )-topology, -reflexivity, the Favard class, Hille-Yosida operators, interpolation and extrapolation, weak -continuous semigroups, the codimension of X in X , adjoint semigroups and the Radon-Nikodym property, tensor products of semigroups and duality, positive semigroups and multiplication semigroups. The major part of the material is reasonably self-contained and is accessible to anyone with basic knowledge of semi- group theory and Banach space theory. Most of the results are proved in detail. The book is addressed primarily to researchers working in semigroup theory, but in view of the "Banach space theory" flavour of many of the results, it will also be of interest to Banach space geometers and operator theorists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern local spectral theory is built on the classical spectral theorem, a fundamental result in single-operator theory and Hilbert spaces. This book provides an in-depth introduction to the natural expansion of this fascinating topic of Banach space operator theory. It gives complete coverage of the field, including the fundamental recent work by Albrecht and Eschmeier which provides the full duality theory for Banach space operators. One of its highlights are the many characterizations of decomposable operators, and of other related, important classes of operators, including identifications of distinguished parts, and results on permanence properties of spectra with respect to several types of similarity. Written in a careful and detailed style, it contains numerous examples, many simplified proofs of classical results, extensive references, and open problems, suitable for continued research.
