Book excerpt: Completely continuous operators on a Hilbert space or even on a Banach space have received considerable attention in the last fifty years. Their study was usually confined to special completely continuous operators or to the discovery of properties common to all of them (for instance, that every such operator admits a proper invariant subspace). On the other hand, interest in spaces of completely continuous operators is comparatively new. Some results of this type may be found implicit in the early work of E. SCHMIDT. Other results are "generally known" and cannot be found explicitly in print. One of the interesting and relatively new results states that modulo the language of BANACH (that is, up to equivalence) the space of all operators on a Hilbert space f> is the second conjugate of the space of all completely continuous operators on f>. The study of spaces of completely continuous operators on a perfectly general Banach space involves many difficulties. Some stem, for instance, from the unsolved problem whether a completely continuous operator on a perfectly general Banach space is always approximable in bound by operators of finite rank. The answer is affirmative in all the special Banach spaces considered. An affirmative answer to the above problem is the ultimate desideratum - it ~ould simplify the theory considerably. A negative answer, however, would be equally interesting (although for us not so useful), since it would settle negatively the open "basis problem".

Download or read book Tensor Norms and Operator Ideals written by A. Defant and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-11-26 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three chapters of this book are entitled Basic Concepts, Tensor Norms, and Special Topics. The first may serve as part of an introductory course in Functional Analysis since it shows the powerful use of the projective and injective tensor norms, as well as the basics of the theory of operator ideals. The second chapter is the main part of the book: it presents the theory of tensor norms as designed by Grothendieck in the Resumé and deals with the relation between tensor norms and operator ideals. The last chapter deals with special questions. Each section is accompanied by a series of exercises.

Book Synopsis Banach Algebras and the General Theory of *-Algebras: Volume 1, Algebras and Banach Algebras by : Theodore W. Palmer
Download or read book Banach Algebras and the General Theory of *-Algebras: Volume 1, Algebras and Banach Algebras written by Theodore W. Palmer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-03-25 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of a two volume set that provides a modern account of basic Banach algebra theory including all known results on general Banach *-algebras. This account emphasizes the role of *-algebraic structure and explores the algebraic results that underlie the theory of Banach algebras and *-algebras. The first volume, which contains previously unpublished results, is an independent, self-contained reference on Banach algebra theory. Each topic is treated in the maximum interesting generality within the framework of some class of complex algebras rather than topological algebras. Proofs are presented in complete detail at a level accessible to graduate students. The book contains a wealth of historical comments, background material, examples, particularly in noncommutative harmonic analysis, and an extensive bibliography. Volume II is forthcoming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Operator Theory conferences, organized by the Department of Mathematics of INCREST and the University of Timi~oara, are conceived as a means to promote cooperation and exchange of information between specialists in all areas of operator theory. This volume consists of a careful selec£ion of papers contributed by the participants of the 1986 Conference. They reflect most of the topics dealt with by the modern operator theory, including recent advances in dual operator algebras and the fnvariant subspace problem, operators in indefinite metric spaces, hyponormal, quasi triangular and decomposable operators, various problems in C*- and W*-algebras and so on. The research contracts of the Department of Mathematics of INCREST with the National Council for Science and Technology of Romania provided the means for developing the research activity in mathematics; they represent the generous framework of these meetings, too. It is our pleasure to acknowledge the financial support of UNESCO which also contributed to the success of this meeting. We are indebted to Professor Israel Gohberg for including these Proceedings in the OT Series and for valuable advice in the editing process. Birkhiiuser Verlag was very cooperative in publishing this volume. Camelia Minculescu, Iren Nemethi and Rodica Stoenescu dealt with the dif ficult task of typing the whOle manuscript using a Rank Xerox 860 word processor; we thank them for the excellent job they did.
Book Synopsis Matrix and Operator Equations and Applications by : Mohammad Sal Moslehian
Download or read book Matrix and Operator Equations and Applications written by Mohammad Sal Moslehian and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-29 with total page 763 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns matrix and operator equations that are widely applied in various disciplines of science to formulate challenging problems and solve them in a faithful way. The main aim of this contributed book is to study several important matrix and operator equalities and equations in a systematic and self-contained fashion. Some powerful methods have been used to investigate some significant equations in functional analysis, operator theory, matrix analysis, and numerous subjects in the last decades. The book is divided into two parts: (I) Matrix Equations and (II) Operator Equations. In the first part, the state-of-the-art of systems of matrix equations is given and generalized inverses are used to find their solutions. The semi-tensor product of matrices is used to solve quaternion matrix equations. The contents of some chapters are related to the relationship between matrix inequalities, matrix means, numerical range, and matrix equations. In addition, quaternion algebras and their applications are employed in solving some famous matrix equations like Sylvester, Stein, and Lyapunov equations. A chapter devoted to studying Hermitian polynomial matrix equations, which frequently arise from linear-quadratic control problems. Moreover, some classical and recently discovered inequalities for matrix exponentials are reviewed. In the second part, the latest developments in solving several equations appearing in modern operator theory are demonstrated. These are of interest to a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians. For example, the Daugavet equation in the linear and nonlinear setting, iterative processes and Volterra-Fredholm integral equations, semicircular elements induced by connected finite graphs, free probability, singular integral operators with shifts, and operator differential equations closely related to the properties of the coefficient operators in some equations are discussed. The chapters give a comprehensive account of their subjects. The exhibited chapters are written in a reader-friendly style and can be read independently. Each chapter contains a rich bibliography. This book is intended for use by both researchers and graduate students of mathematics, physics, and engineering.
Book Synopsis Complete Normed Algebras by : Frank F. Bonsall
Download or read book Complete Normed Algebras written by Frank F. Bonsall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The axioms of a complex Banach algebra were very happily chosen. They are simple enough to allow wide ranging fields of application, notably in harmonic analysis, operator theory and function algebras. At the same time they are tight enough to allow the development of a rich collection of results, mainly through the interplay of the elementary parts of the theories of analytic functions, rings, and Banach spaces. Many of the theorems are things of great beauty, simple in statement, surprising in content, and elegant in proof. We believe that some of them deserve to be known by every mathematician. The aim of this book is to give an account of the principal methods and results in the theory of Banach algebras, both commutative and non commutative. It has been necessary to apply certain exclusion principles in order to keep our task within bounds. Certain classes of concrete Banach algebras have a very rich literature, namely C*-algebras, function algebras, and group algebras. We have regarded these highly developed theories as falling outside our scope. We have not entirely avoided them, but have been concerned with their place in the general theory, and have stopped short of developing their special properties. For reasons of space and time we have omitted certain other topics which would quite naturally have been included, in particular the theories of multipliers and of extensions of Banach algebras, and the implications for Banach algebras of some of the standard algebraic conditions on rings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approach your problems from the right end It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is and begin with the answers. Then one day, that they can't see the problem. perhaps you will find the final question. G. K. Chesterton. The Scandal of Father 'The Hermit Oad in Crane Feathers' in R. Brown 'The point of a Pin'. van Gulik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics.
Book Synopsis Operator Theory in Function Spaces by : Kehe Zhu
Download or read book Operator Theory in Function Spaces written by Kehe Zhu and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers Toeplitz operators, Hankel operators, and composition operators on both the Bergman space and the Hardy space. The setting is the unit disk and the main emphasis is on size estimates of these operators: boundedness, compactness, and membership in the Schatten classes. Most results concern the relationship between operator-theoretic properties of these operators and function-theoretic properties of the inducing symbols. Thus a good portion of the book is devoted to the study of analytic function spaces such as the Bloch space, Besov spaces, and BMOA, whose elements are to be used as symbols to induce the operators we study. The book is intended for both research mathematicians and graduate students in complex analysis and operator theory. The prerequisites are minimal; a graduate course in each of real analysis, complex analysis, and functional analysis should sufficiently prepare the reader for the book. Exercises and bibliographical notes are provided at the end of each chapter. These notes will point the reader to additional results and problems. Kehe Zhu is a professor of mathematics at the State University of New York at Albany. His previous books include Theory of Bergman Spaces (Springer, 2000, with H. Hedenmalm and B. Korenblum) and Spaces of Holomorphic Functions in the Unit Ball (Springer, 2005). His current research interests are holomorphic function spaces and operators acting on them.
