Book excerpt: This new and timely book deals with the magnitude and the intensity of the poverty in Latin America, Mexico and the state of Nuevo Leon. The enormous and chronic social problems of poverty in 1970 struck approximately 40 per cent of the families of Latin America or 119 million people. In 1990, of 423,913,043 habitants of Latin America, 46 per cent were living in poverty, that is to say, 195 million people were suffering this calamity (CEPAL). According to the same CEPAL, in 2002 44 per cent of the population of Latin America was poor, whereas 19.40 per cent were living in extreme poverty, indigence or misery. Seen in another way, the poverty in Latin America increased in that period of 20 years, from 1970 to 1990, 38.97 per cent. At the moment, in Latin America there are 225 million poor people. This book is an essential reference to a problem which the world must, if for no other reason than necessity, deal with in a vigorous and just manner.

With Non-literary Fiction, Esther Gabara examines how contemporary art produced across the Americas has reacted to the rising tide of neoliberal regimes, focusing on the crucial role of fiction in daily politics. Gabara argues that these fictions depart from familiar literary narrative structures and emerge in the new mediums and practices that have revolutionized contemporary art. Each chapter details how fiction is created through visual art forms—in performance and body art, posters, mail art, found objects, and installations. For Gabara, these fictions comprise a type of art that asks viewers to collaborate in the creation of the work and helps them to withstand the brutal restrictions imposed by dominant neoliberal regimes. During repressive regimes of the 1960s and 1970s and free trade agreements of the 1990s, artists and critics consistently said no to economic privatization, political deregulation, and reactionary social logic as they rejected inherited notions of visual, literary, and political representation. Through close analyses of artworks and writings by leading figures of these two generations, including Indigenous thinkers, Gabara shows how negation allows for the creation of fiction outside textual forms of literature.

Book excerpt: La idea central del libro proviene de tomar la letra de una de las canciones del disco "Autoconstrucción", que escribió Cruzvillegas y grabó con músicos de Glasgow en 2008. Las canciones aluden al lugar donde creció, la colonia Ajusco al sur de la Ciudad de México, a su entorno y a sus diferentes problemas sociales y políticos. "Razia", título de la canción que eligieron, habla de un desalojo violento y de la comunidad que se une para ayudar a una familia que se encuentra en problemas. Cada letra de las palabras que componen la canción fue impresa en la Imprenta Móvil de Nuria Montiel, que retoma la naturaleza contestataria de la gráfica y la palabra impresa. Así pues, cada letra impresa de Razia fue fotocopiada para formar -línea por línea- la canción completa. Luego las fotocopias fueron colocadas temporalmente en las fachadas de algunas de las casas de la colonia, operando en la vía pública como memoria y huella de las historias que se pueden contar allá. Ramiro Chaves registró con su cámara digital la acción, mostrando así el resultado del trabajo en conjunto de los tres artistas. // The central idea of the book comes from taking the lyrics from the songs on the "Autoconstrucción" record that allude to the place where Cruzvillegas grew up, the Ajusco neighborhood in the south of Mexico City, its surroundings and various social and political problems. "Razia", the title of the song they selected, speaks of an eviction and of the community pulling together to help a family in trouble. Every letter of every word in the song was printed on the Imprenta Móvil (Mobile Press), Nuria Montiel's project. Thereby, the printed lyrics of Razia were photocopied to form—line by line—the complete song. Then the photocopies were temporarily placed on the façades of some of the houses of the neighborhood, serving as reminder and testimony of the many stories that can be told. Ramiro Chaves recorded the result of the action with his digital camera.

Book excerpt: AutoconstrucciÃ[3]n accompanies Cruzvillegas' exhibition at CCA Glasgow, the result of a six month joint residency at CCA and Cove Park by the Mexican artist. In the exhibition, the artist charts the evolution of his family's house and finds, in its making, the roots of his current sculptural practice. Cruzvillegas was brought up in an area of Mexico City called Ajusco. Driven by necessity the community was built through collaboration which bred a system of social and political solidarity. It was a culture of hybridity and the model of construction became intertwined with the model for living. For Abraham Cruzvillegas that context provided a metaphor for the self-conscious process of creating an identity and methodology for the construction of his artistic practice. In AutoconstrucciÃ[3]n he draws together a diverse series of elements including an exhibition, a series of musical performances, a ride across a city and a book, and through all of this work, it is the concept of sharing that is a key element, framed by a makeshift DIY aesthetic.
