Book excerpt: Born in 1905 in the center of the crumbling Austro-Hungarian Empire, Viktor Frankl was a witness to the great political, philosophical, and scientific upheavals of the twentieth century. In these stirring recollections, Frankl describes how as a young doctor of neurology in prewar Vienna his disagreements with Freud and Adler led to the development of "the third Viennese School of Psychotherapy," known as logotherapy; recounts his harrowing trials in four concentration camps during the War; and reflects on the celebrity brought by the publication of Man's Search for Meaning in 1945.

Book excerpt: "Widor's Toccata is the most famous organ piece composed in the past three hundred years-since Bach's ubiquitous Toccata in D Minor. Linked inseparably with the organ through his ten seminal organ symphonies and legendary sixty-four years as organist at Saint-Sulpice, Widor drew crowds of doting admirers from all walks of life around himself and Cavaillâe-Coll's great organ of one hundred stops. It is apparent throughout these "Autobiographical Recollections" that Widor was well-connected, moving with ease among the intelligentsia, presidents, politicians, royalty, nobility, patrons, and artists. A keen observer and a man of sophistication and extraordinary erudition, Widor was an all-embracing musician and notable historical figure who led an active life beyond his famous organ gallery. As permanent secretary of the Academy of Fine-Arts, he was the cultural ambassador of France for more than twenty years. Few musicians of any era have had a broader experience, wider sphere of influence, and greater number of significant and varied accomplishments. Preceded by a comprehensive Preface, these "Autobiographical Recollections," narrated in the last months of Widor's life, are translated into English for the first time, meticulously edited, and profusely annotated. The persons, political details, and historical events that Widor spoke of with great fluency are identified in notes that give the reader a full understanding of the narrative. Several appendixes and a trove of hitherto unpublished photos illuminate the text. John R. Near is Professor Emeritus of Music, Principia College, and author of Widor: A Life beyond the Toccata and Widor on Organ Performance Practice and Technique"--

Book excerpt: Measuring Behaviour is a guide to the principles and methods of quantitative studies of behaviour, with an emphasis on techniques of direct observation, recording and analysis. Numerous textbooks describe and analyse human and animal behaviour, but none provides a comprehensive review of the principles and techniques of its measurement. Those undertaking this task for the first time are often bemused by the apparent difficulty of the job facing them - how will they accurately and systematically record all that is happening? The purpose of this book is to provide this basic knowledge in a succinct and easily understood form. This concise review of methodology includes a comprehensive annotated bibliography. Written with ,brevity and clarity, Measuring Behaviour is intended, above all, as a practical guide-book.

Book excerpt: Written toward the end of his remarkable life, Autobiography & Recollections tells the story of Bedros Der Bedrossian who lived through some of the most turbulent and tragic episodes of modern human history. He was shot at by a Turkish sniper when he was just 10 years old and by the age of 11 he had already survived two massacres. Yet the worst was still to come. The Turks wiped out an estimated 1.5 million Armenians during the first genocide of the 20th century, which commenced in April 1915. Der Bedrossian describes how he lost all but a few members of his family in the Armenian Genocide; and how he and a young niece survived only because a Danish hospital administrator to whom he owed a debt insisted they remain in hiding in her home with several others. This is a riveting and heartbreaking tale of death and destruction; yet it is also a story of love, hope, perseverance, and survival. This book is an invaluable resource to historians and genocide scholars. Perhaps more importantly, by documenting the unfairness of life as a Christians in Muslim nations, it serves as a dire warning to a world currently grappling with the rise of Islamic extremism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aggregating 46 years of research, this book proposes a fresh approach on how to conduct assessment and therapy using autobiographical memories. It offers a system to identify and deconstruct major lifetime memories and shows how clinicians can work with the content of these memories to help clients better understand past events as present events are filtered through them. Dr. Bruhn’s first book on this subject, Earliest Childhood Memories: Theory and Application to Clinical Practice (1990), illustrated what could be learned about clients’ present situation from the Early Memories Procedure (EMP), which is designed to identify and explore autobiographical memories of problematic experiences in therapy. The present book, which builds upon Dr. Bruhn’s work with incarcerated women and male parolees, shows what can be done with these key memories by working directly on them in therapy. Dr. Bruhn showcases a new insight-oriented treatment paradigm, "memories work," to help resolve the issues identified in EMP responses. Chapters offer an alternative view of processing trauma and explore each facet of using memories work to design mental health interventions with clients. Included throughout are detailed case studies and techniques to re-engineer dysfunctional perceptions. Clinicians and therapists will come away with the tools necessary to use memories work successfully with clients.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1860 edition. Excerpt: ... EXTRACTS LESLIE'S CORRESPONDENCE. When a little above seventeen Leslie landed in England, as we read in his Autobiography, in December, 1811. He kept up a regular correspondence with his family at Philadelphia, from which, however, only extracts have been placed at my disposal. It is principally from these extracts and his correspondence with Washington Irving, that the following selections have been made. Leslie was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1813 to 1859, the year of his death, with the exception of 1815, 1817, 1818, 1823, 1828, 1830, 1834, and 1853. His life was uneventful; spent in the affectionate discharge of family duties -- which no man ever fulfilled better -- and in the happy practice of his art. Its public interest lies entirely in its connection with his pictures. I have therefore enumerated, for each year, the pictures of that year, with selections from his letters which throw light on the progress of his pictures, or on the occupations, ideas, and associations of the painter. I have been fuller in my extracts from the earlier letters, as of importance in illustrating the growth of the writer's mind, both as regards art and general culture. Leslie's letters paint the man -- affectionate, social, candid, modest, and eager for instruction and improvement; always seeking the society of the best and most eminent persons to whom he could gain access, without intrusion or forwardness. -s 1812. Pictures Painted this Year. Timon Of Athens. -- Hercules. -- Portraits Of Mrs. Visscher; Miss DEGREES Smythk; Mr. Inskeep; Mr. Coate; Benjamin West, P. R. A.; Mr. West (of Salem, Massachusetts); Mr. Earle. Leslie's first year in London was a memorable one, especially to citizens of the United States residing in England. On th

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiographical memory is a major form of human memory. it is the basis of most psycotherapies, an important repository of legal, historical, and literary information, and, in some views, the source of the concept of self. When it fails, it is the focus of serious complaints in many neurological disorders. This timely book brings together and integrates the best contemporary work on the cognitive psychology of autobiographical memory. Introductory chapters place the study of autobiographical memory in its historical, methodological, and theoretical contexts; chapters reporting original research probe the recollections people have for substantial portions of their lives. Topics include the schematic and temporal organization of autobiographical memory, the temporal distribution of autobiographical memories, and the failures of autobiographical memory in various forms of amnesia. Autobiographical Memory constitutes the first tutorial in this exciting new area of research. Cognitive psychologists, clinicians, researchers in artificial intelligence, and their students - indeed, anyone interested in the processes that preserve and distort autobiography - will find it a useful resource.

Book excerpt: Patience Loader has become an icon for the disastrous winter entrapment of the Martin and Willie handcart companies, who traveled the Mormon Trail in the 1850s. Her autobiography offers an important record of those events, but also of much more. Wife of a Civil War soldier, Patience served as an army laundress in Washington DC and ran a boarding house as well. After the war, her husband died of consumption, and Patience returned to Utah alone, where she became a cook in a mining camp.
