Book Synopsis The Aramaic and Egyptian Legal Traditions at Elephantine by : Alejandro F. Botta
Download or read book The Aramaic and Egyptian Legal Traditions at Elephantine written by Alejandro F. Botta and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the interrelationships between the formulary traditions of the legal documents of the Jewish colony of Elephantine and the legal formulary traditions of their Egyptian counterparts. The legal documents of Elephantine have been approached in three different ways thus far: first, comparing them to the later Aramaic legal tradition; second, as part of a self-contained system, and more recently from the point of view of the Assyriological legal tradition. However, there is still a fourth possible approach, which has long been neglected by scholars in this field, and that is to study the Elephantine legal documents from an Egyptological perspective. In seeking the Egyptian parallels and antecedents to the Aramaic formulary, Botta hopes to balance the current scholarly perspective, based mostly upon Aramaic and Assyriological comparative studies.

Book Synopsis The Conception of Punishment in Early Indian Literature by : Terence Day
Download or read book The Conception of Punishment in Early Indian Literature written by Terence Day and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early textual source of the vast body of Dharmasastra literature of India on religion, law, and morality contain numerous statements that present or imply an undefined conception of punishment. Yet nowhere is this conception formally defined, as if knowledge of its nature and structure were generally known. In this “first-ever” attempt to provide a definition of the conception and to recover its ideational infrastructure, the author has drawn on these sources to reconstruct the theoretical backgrounds of its distinctive metaphysical, religious, juridical, social, and moral components. He shows that the conception is “the totality of correction principles, powers, agents, processes, and operations through which acts contrary to the Universal Order are counteracted and compensated.” The volume contains extensive documentation, a glossary of Sanskrit terms, a selected bibliography, and an index.
Book Synopsis Theory and Method in Biblical and Cuneiform Law by : Bernard M. Levinson
Download or read book Theory and Method in Biblical and Cuneiform Law written by Bernard M. Levinson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1994-09-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume focus on two crucial topics that have been given short shrift in the contemporary debate on the composition and formation of the Pentateuch: (1) biblical law, and the development of Israelite legal institutions; (2) the significance of ancient Near Eastern law for developing a proper model for the composition and editorial history of the Pentateuch. To correct the imbalance, the focus of this volume is on whether the biblical and cuneiform legal corpora underwent a process of literary revision and interpolation that reflects legal, social, and theological development. If so, what is the nature of this development and the evidence for it? If not, how are the textual phenomena otherwise to be explained? The contributors are Raymond Westbrook, Bernard M. Levinson, Samuel Greengus, Martin Buss, Sophie Lafont, Victor H. Matthews, William Morrow, Dale Patrick, and Eckart Otto. The volume will be of interest to students and specialists in biblical law, pentateuchal studies, and comparative legal history.

Book Synopsis Politics and Culture in International History by : Adda B. Bozeman
Download or read book Politics and Culture in International History written by Adda B. Bozeman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current political conflicts in Somalia and Russia make the reappearance of this book as relevant as ever. Politics and Culture in International History illumines world politics by identifying the causes of conflict and war and assessing the validity of schemes for peace and unity. Bozeman maintains that political systems are grounded in cultures; thus, international relations are by definition hitercultural relations. She deals exclusively with the thought patterns of the world's literate civilizations and societies between the fourth millenium B.C. and the fifteenth century A.D. In a substantial new introduction, Bozeman analyzes world politics over the last half century, showing how the interplay of politics and culture has intensified. She notes that the world's assembly of states is no longer held together by substantive accords on norms, purposes, and values, but by loose agreements on the use offorms, techniques, and words. The causes and effects of these changes between the 1950s and 1990s are assayed by Bozeman.
