Book excerpt: "Literacy and numeracy are described in the Australian Core Skills Framework - as the core skills of learning, reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy. These skills are needed to communicate at work, at home and in the community and are recognised as being critically important for individuals to continue to learn across their lifetime. The ACSF provides a reference point and consistent language for describing and discussing performance within the five core skill areas. It is used for a variety of purposes by government, training providers and industry audiences. ... This guide shows you how the ACSF can be used to: document workplace core skill requirements; review your internal systems and processes for their core skill demands; communicate with your workforce about core skills and their importance, and; outline your core skill needs to trainers and training providers."--Introducing the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF)

Training Package developers can use the ACSF to ensure that the core skills associated with competency standards are articulated clearly and adequately addressed as part of unit design and descriptions. This makes it easier for teachers/trainers to address core skills development as an integral part of training. - p.3.

Book excerpt: This is the final report of a project commissioned in 2020 by the then Department of Education, Skills and Employment to review the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) and Digital Literacy Skills Framework (DLSF) and tools available to support assessment using these frameworks. The review explored the development and history of the ACSF and DLSF, their use and application in the Australian context and examined features of selected international adult skills frameworks and curriculum. Through this desktop research and range of consultation activities with stakeholders, the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) has investigated current use of the ACSF and DLSF and identified issues that indicate a need for framework reform or change. This report documents the findings from the review and proposes recommendations that will better position the frameworks to support agile responses to swiftly changing skill needs. The first main recommendation is to consider the Digital Capability Framework (when available) as a replacement for the DLSF. The second is to continue to maintain the ACSF as the pre-eminent Australian framework for language, literacy and numeracy (LLN). [Abstract, ed]

Book excerpt: Digital literacy refers to the skills and competencies needed to use digital technologies to achieve personal goals, enhance employability skills and support education and training. This Digital Literacy Skills Framework sits alongside the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF), and the ACSF Pre Level 1. Digital literacy has been added as the sixth core skill to this framework to reinforce the concept that digital literacy is part of an integral suite of core skills that are fundamental for individuals to be able to participate in society and work. The ACSF, including the Digital Literacy Skills Framework, facilitates a consistent national approach to the identification and development of the core skills in diverse personal, community, work and education and training contexts. It is important to note that the ACSF (including the Digital Literacy Skills Framework) reflects contemporary use of English in Australia. [Publisher summary, ed]

Book excerpt: "The project examined current use of the ACSF in literacy and numeracy programs in Tasmania, in particular the Employer Pledge Program (now known as the 26TEN Grants Program - Employer Stream). The core of the project was to explore options and make recommendations on how to report progress at finer gradations of the ACSF rather than measuring by whole levels alone. The report concluded that there was enough evidence and support to consider reporting progress at finer gradations within an ACSF level rather than just between levels. The report recommends that Skills Tasmania discusses the options outlined in Table 1 on page 15 with a range of experienced and relevant personnel and consider trialling some or all of the options. Extending the focus of the trial beyond Tasmania to the national arena is also recommended."--Overview of the scope and purpose of the Project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender, Masculinities and Lifelong Learning reflects on current debates and discourses around gender and education, in which some academics, practitioners and policy-makers have referred to a crisis of masculinity. This book explores questions such as: Are men under-represented in education? Are women outstripping men in terms of achievement? What evidence supports the view that men are becoming educationally disadvantaged? Drawing on research from a number of countries, including the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, the contributors' discuss a range of issues which intersect with gender to impact on education, including structural factors such as class, ethnicity and age as well as colonisation and migration. The book provides evidence and argument to illuminate contemporary debates about the involvement of men and women in education, including: The impact of colonisation on the gendering of education and lifelong learning International surveys on men, women and educational participation Gender, masculinities and migrants’ learning experiences Boys-only classes as a response to ‘the problem of underachieving boys’ Men’s perspectives on learning to become parents Community learning, gender and public policy Older men’s perspectives on (re-)entering post-compulsory education The book goes on to suggest the implications for practice, research and policy. Importantly, it critically addresses some of the taken-for-granted beliefs about men and their engagement in lifelong learning, presenting new evidence to demonstrate the complexity of gender and education today. With these complexities in mind, the authors provide a framework for developing further understanding of the issues involved with gender and lifelong learning. Gender, Masculinities and Lifelong Learning will be of interest to any practitioner open to fresh ideas and approaches in teaching and programming connected with gender and education.

Book excerpt: This edited volume brings together diverse perspectives on Australian literacy education for Indigenous peoples, highlighting numerous educational approaches, ideologies and aspirations. The Australian Indigenous context presents unique challenges for educators working across the continent in settings ranging from urban to remote, and with various social and language groups. Accordingly, one of the book’s main goals is to foster dialogue between researchers and practitioners working in these contexts, and who have vastly different theoretical and ideological perspectives. It offers a valuable resource for academics and teachers of Indigenous students who are interested in literacy-focused research, and complements scholarship on literacy education in comparable Indigenous settings internationally.

Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, an increasingly economistic discourse has dominated discussions about adult literacy and numeracy. This book provides critiques of, and alternative narratives to the dominant discourse. Authors provide tools and methodologies of critique, including ways of seeing how policies in the countries of focus come to be captured almost completely by the interests of business and industry, as well as how to critically interpret the data that policy makers use to justify their priorities. But adult literacy and numeracy practitioners and learners find spaces and places to pursue learning that matters for the lived experiences of adults and their communities. Beyond Economic Interests presents the struggles and achievements of practitioners and learners that lead the readers of the book to critically appreciate that a counter narrative to the purely economistic discourse of adult literacy and numeracy is much needed, and possible.
