Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Australia and New Zealand Law and History Society (ANZLHS) Prize for 2023 Maritime workers occupy a central place in global labour history. This new and compelling account from Australia, shows seafaring and waterside unions engaged in a shared history of activism for legally regulated wages and safe liveable conditions for all who go to sea. Maritime Men of the Asia-Pacific provides a corrective to studies which overlook this region’s significance as a provider of the world’s maritime labour force and where unions have a rich history of reaching across their differences to forge connections in solidarity. From the ‘militant young Australian’ Harry Bridges whose progressive unionism transformed the San Francisco waterfront, to Australia’s successful implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, this is a story of vision and leadership on the international stage. Unionists who saw themselves as internationalists were also operating within a national and imperial framework where conflicting interests and differences of race and ideology had to be overcome. Union activists in India, China and Japan struggled against indentured labour and ‘coolie’ standards. They linked with their fellow-unionists in pursuing an ideal of international labour rights against the power of shipowners and anti-union governments. This is a complex story of endurance, cooperation and conflict and its empowering legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 2001 and 2002 the Maritime Institute of the Universiteit Gent and the Centre for International Law of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel joined efforts and hosted Emeritus Professor Dermott Devine as holder of the International Francqui Chair, around the central themes of fisheries and coastal state jurisdiction with respect to marine pollution. As Emeritus Director of the Institute of Marine and Environmental Law, Professor Devine was available for discussion and participation in the scientific life of the different Belgian universities having similar fields of interest. Within this context six classes of excellence were organized with the participation of interested Belgian colleagues across the board, belonging to universities adhering to different basic philosophies and even forming part of different linguistic communities. These classes culminated in a final symposium where Professor Devine gave a birds-eye view of the general theme, overarching and synthesizing the different subjects covered during the previous classes of excellence. This book offers a reworked compilation of all the contributions of the key-note speakers to the classes of excellence.

Book excerpt: It is appropriate that the second edition of this established textbook sold in over 150 countries and regarded by many as the standard work on the subject -should be published at a time of great change in the international shipping industry. This edition reflects such change. It also places considerable emphasis on the need for a professional approach in all areas of shipping practice and management in order to provide the high quality service required to sustain and expand international trade, and will help to establish that professionalism. The book is ideal not only for students preparing for shipping examinations but also for persons employed in shipping companies, ashore and afloat. In short it is an aide-memo ire to those engaged in the industry throughout the world and is regarded by many as the shipping executive's handbook. Readers who wish to know more about the basic elements of the subject should also study the com panion volume Elements of Shipping (fifth edition). In addition, the sea port operator or executive should study my recently published book Elements of Port Operation and Management. The opportunity has been taken to widen the scope of the book. New chapters have been included on the economics of container ization, computerization, roll on/roll off (Ro/Ro) vessels and their features, and counter-trade. In addition, a number of existing chapters have been expanded in the areas of marketing, budgets, political factors, ship finance, BIFFEX, ICHCA, IMO, GCBS, and shipping company mergers and acquisitions.

Book excerpt: Australian National Line (ANL), the trading name for the Australian Coastal Shipping Commission, began operations on 1 January 1957, when it took over the fleet and personnel of the Australian Shipping Board. This new Commonwealth Government enterprise operated the largest fleet in coastal trade, ran passenger ships such as Princess of Tasmania and Empress of Australia that became household names, and from 1969 carried the Australian flag into international liner and bulk cargo trades to East Asia, UK/Europe, North America and New Zealand. ANL was at the forefront of innovation in bulk shipping, RoRo vessels and containerisation, also in the redesign of ports and terminals. Many of its 110 ships were built in Australia. Its impressive record of achievement eventually became overshadowed by financial woes, poor industrial relations and a difficult relationship with government that culminated in the sale of its container business to French owners in December 1998. This fleet history, written and informed by the knowledge, experience and insight of those who sailed on and worked with the ships, weaves the stories of a complex forty-year transition from conventional shipping to modern bulk-handling and containers along with the nation-building role of the ANL, whose flag still flies proudly across the region as a subsidiary of French CMA CGM. Background chapters on the formation, development and demise of ANL are complemented by 44 chapters that detail the design, operation, incidents and post-ANL careers of every class of ship owned and/or operated by ANL up to 1999. The book is lavishly illustrated with over 300 images, most in colour, and will become an essential source on Australia's 20th century maritime history. Hardcover, ix + 349pp, 325 images, bibly, index.
