Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the rapid developments in the UV-B measurement techniques and the rapidly growing research in the field in the late 80's and early 90's, we organized a large gathering of distinguished experts in a NATO Advanced Study Institute, held in Halkidiki, Greece on October, 2-11. 1995. The Institute was organized so as to include state of the art lectures on most aspects of solar ultraviolet radiation and its effects. This was achieved by extended lectures and discussions given in five sessions by 27 lecturers and a demonstration of filed measurements and calibration techniques at the end of the Institute. The ASI began with the sun and fundamentals on solar radiative emissions and their variability in time and continued with the interaction of solar Ultraviolet with the atmosphere through the complex scattering processes and photochemical reactions involved. Particular emphasis was given to changes in atmospheric composition imposed by different manifestations of the solar activity cycle. as well as on the modelling of radiative transfer through the atmosphere and the ocean under variable environmental conditions. Overviews on the ozone issue. its monitoring and variability were extensively discussed with emphasis on the observed acceleration of ozone decline in the early 90's. This acceleration had as a consequence, significant increases in UV-B radiation observed at a few world-wide distributed stations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the use of the ultraviolet for remote sensing of the Earth's atmosphere. It covers the Earth's UV radiative environment, experimental techniques, and current applications. it is my intention to provide the information needed to "make a first approximation" concerning the use of the ultraviolet and to provide access through the literature for a more thorough study. * Contains recent UV applications not previously available in book form such as ozone, auroral images, and ionospheric sensing * Features broad coverage of fundamentals of atmospheric geophysics with values for fluxes, cross-sections, and radiances * Covers techniques that illustrate principles of measurements with typical values * Contains numerous references to original literature

Book excerpt: The nature's amazing beauties are largely driven by the day-to-day activity of the sun and today the most concerned issue is undoubtedly based on incoming solar radiation and ultraviolet part of solar radiation at the earth's surface. This monograph considers the basic physical properties of different atmospheric phenomena like climate classification, formation of the rainbow, atmospheric gases, troposcatter propagation and attenuation, water vapor absorption, scattering by rain drops etc. in a very systematic and lucid way. It further includes solar and terrestrial radiations, highlighting UV protection for pedestrian using tree canopies and ends with the Rayleigh scattering of light. This book supplements information with a view to attract and generate further thoughts to the scientists and advanced level students who are dedicated in research in the concerned area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solar transition region, which spans the temperature range from about 20,000 to 1,000,000 K, separates the chromosphere from the corona. All the energy that heats the corona and powers the solar wind must pass through this part of the solar atmosphere. This book summarizes recent ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet observations of the transition region, the empirical models derived from them, and the physical models that try to explain both the observations and the empirical models. The observational focus is on quiet solar transition region observations made with Skylab and subsequent rocket and satellite experiments. The book also presents a unified discussion of the analysis of ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet spectroscopic data, including the determination of the emission measure and density and temperature diagnostics. This will be useful to astrophysicists who are confronting high-resolution ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet data from astrophysical plasmas for the first time.
