Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the task of computation from the standpoint of asymptotic analysis and multiple scales that may be inherent in the system dynamics being studied. This is in contrast to the usual methods of numerical analysis and computation. The technical literature is replete with numerical methods such as Runge-Kutta approach and its variations, finite element methods, and so on. However, not much attention has been given to asymptotic methods for computation, although such approaches have been widely applied with great success in the analysis of dynamic systems. The presence of different scales in a dynamic phenomenon enable us to make judicious use of them in developing computational approaches which are highly efficient. Many such applications have been developed in such areas as astrodynamics, fluid mechanics and so on. This book presents a novel approach to make use of the different time constants inherent in the system to develop rapid computational methods. First, the fundamental notions of asymptotic analysis are presented with classical examples. Next, the novel systematic and rigorous approaches of system decomposition and reduced order models are presented. Next, the technique of multiple scales is discussed. Finally application to rapid computation of several aerospace systems is discussed, demonstrating the high efficiency of such methods.

Book excerpt: This book presents a new method of asymptotic analysis of boundary-layer problems, the Successive Complementary Expansion Method (SCEM). The first part is devoted to a general presentation of the tools of asymptotic analysis. It gives the keys to understand a boundary-layer problem and explains the methods to construct an approximation. The second part is devoted to SCEM and its applications in fluid mechanics, including external and internal flows.

Proper application of these tools is significantly enhanced by a thorough understanding of the underlying theoretical and computation

This book was released on with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reproduces the doctoral thesis written by a remarkable mathematician, Sergei V. Kerov. His untimely death at age 54 left the mathematical community with an extensive body of work and this one-of-a-kind monograph. Here, he gives a clear and lucid account of results and methods of asymptotic representation theory. The book is a unique source of information on an important topic of current research. Asymptotic representation theory of symmetric groups deals with problems of two types: asymptotic properties of representations of symmetric groups of large order and representations of the limiting object, i.e., the infinite symmetric group. The author contributed significantly in the development of both directions. His book presents an account of these contributions, as well as those of other researchers. Among the problems of the first type, the author discusses the properties of the distribution of the normalized cycle length in a random permutation and the limiting shape of a random (with respect to the Plancherel measure) Young diagram. He also studies stochastic properties of the deviations of random diagrams from the limiting curve. Among the problems of the second type, Kerov studies an important problem of computing irreducible characters of the infinite symmetric group. This leads to the study of a continuous analog of the notion of Young diagram, and in particular, to a continuous analogue of the hook walk algorithm, which is well known in the combinatorics of finite Young diagrams. In turn, this construction provides a completely new description of the relation between the classical moment problems of Hausdorff and Markov. The book is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in representation theory and combinatorics.

Book excerpt: Computational Analysis of Structured Media presents a systematical approach to analytical formulae for the effective properties of deterministic and random composites. Schwarz’s method and functional equations yield for use in symbolic-numeric computations relevant to the effective properties. The work is primarily concerned with constructive topics of boundary value problems, complex analysis, and their applications to composites. Symbolic-numerical computations are widely used to deduce new formulae interesting for applied mathematicians and engineers. The main line of presentation is the investigation of two-phase 2D composites with non-overlapping inclusions randomly embedded in matrices. Computational methodology for main classes of problems in structured media Theory of Representative Volume Element Combines exact results, Monte-Carlo simulations and Resummation techniques under one umbrella Contains new analytical formulae obtained in the last ten years and it combines different asymptotic methods with the corresponding computer implementations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asymptotics and Special Functions provides a comprehensive introduction to two important topics in classical analysis: asymptotics and special functions. The integrals of a real variable and contour integrals are discussed, along with the Liouville-Green approximation and connection formulas for solutions of differential equations. Differential equations with regular singularities are also considered, with emphasis on hypergeometric and Legendre functions. Comprised of 14 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the basic concepts and definitions of asymptotic analysis and special functions, followed by a discussion on asymptotic theories of definite integrals containing a parameter. Contour integrals as well as integrals of a real variable are described. Subsequent chapters deal with the analytic theory of ordinary differential equations; differential equations with regular and irregular singularities; sums and sequences; and connection formulas for solutions of differential equations. The book concludes with an evaluation of methods used in estimating (as opposed to bounding) errors in asymptotic approximations and expansions. This monograph is intended for graduate mathematicians, physicists, and engineers.

It seek to explore the role of algorithmic ideas in computer science generally, and relate these ideas to the range of precisely formulated problems for which we can design and analyze algorithm.

Mixed effects models, including linear mixed models, generalized linear mixed models, non-linear mixed effects models, and non-parametric mixed effects models are complex models, yet, these models are extensively used in practice. This monograph provides a comprehensive account of asymptotic analysis of mixed effects models. The monograph is suitable for researchers and graduate students who wish to learn about asymptotic tools and research problems in mixed effects models. It may also be used as a reference book for a graduate-level course on mixed effects models, or asymptotic analysis.

Book excerpt: These notes originate from a one semester course which forms part of the "Math Methods" cycle at Brown. In the hope that these notes might prove useful for reference purposes several additional sections have been included and also a table of contents and index. Although asymptotic analysis is now enjoying a period of great vitality, these notes do not reflect a research oriented course. The course is aimed toward people in applied mathematics, physics, engineering, etc., who have a need for asymptotic analysis in their work. The choice of subjects has been largely dictated by the likelihood of application. Also abstraction and generality have not been pursued. Technique and computation are given equal prominence with theory. Both rigorous and formal theory is presented --very often in tandem. In practice, the means for a rigorous analysis are not always available. For this reason a goal has been the cultivation of mature formal reasoning. Therefore, during the course of lectures formal presentations gradually eclipse rigorous presentations. When this occurs, rigorous proofs are given as exercises or in the case of lengthy proofs, reference is made to the Reading List at the end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study continuous time oligopolies in which a small number of firms producing similar goods compete with one another by setting prices or quantities. We study a deterministic version of the problem using an asymptotic expansion of the relevant HJB partial differential equations. We find in this setting that for firms with highly differentiated goods, the type of competition matters little. For less differentiated goods, we find that the Cournot type market produces a greater value to the firms than the Bertrand type market. We then study a stochastic version of the two games using numerical techniques. This allows us to compare firms with a greater degree of product differentiation. The value is still greater to firms in most scenarios in a Cournot market, but in some situations the classical Bertrand-Cournot dichotomy is reversed.
