Our focus is on estimating the shape, pose, and part motion of an articulated object during human-object manipulation. The task is challenging as the object is dynamically changing and 3D reconstruction from 2D is inherently ambiguous. To enable research in this direction, we first create D3D-HOI: a dataset of monocular videos with ground truth annotations of 3D object shape, pose and part motion from human-object interaction videos. Our dataset consists of several common categories of articulated objects in diverse real-world scenes, observed from a variety of fixed camera view points. Each manipulated object (e.g., microwave) is represented using a 3D parametric model that best fits the captured data. We then annotate the size, pose, and part articulation values at every frame. A novel optimization-based method is proposed based on differentiable renderer and human-object interaction terms, which leverage the human pose for better inferring of the object spatial layout and dynamics. We evaluate this new approach on our dataset, demonstrating that human-object relations can significantly reduce the pose and motion errors on real-world articulated objects. Despite much progress in single-view 3D reconstruction, it is still challenging to infer an articulated 3D object model from an RGB video showing a person manipulating the object. We canonicalize the task of articulated 3D human-object interaction reconstruction from RGB video, and carry out a systematic benchmark of five families of methods for this task: 3D plane estimation, 3D cuboid estimation, CAD model fitting, implicit field fitting, and free-form mesh fitting. Our experiments show that all methods struggle to obtain high accuracy results even when provided ground truth information about the observed objects. At the same time, we also found that highly constrained object shape representations (e.g. CAD models) work much better than unconstrained representations (e.g. free-form meshes). We also identify key factors which make the task challenging and suggest directions for future work on this challenging 3D computer vision task.

Structure from motion is defined as the problem of recovering information about the 3D structure of scenes imaged by a camera in a video sequence. Our study aims at the challenging problem of non-rigid shapes (e.g. a beating heart or a smiling face). Non-rigid structures appear constantly in our everyday life, think of a bicep curling, a torso twisting or a smiling face. Our research seeks a general method to perform 3D shape recovery purely from data, without having to rely on a pre-computed model or training data. Open problems in the field are the difficulty of the non-linear estimation, the lack of a real-time system, large amounts of missing data in real-world video sequences, measurement noise and strong deformations. Solving these problems would take us far beyond the current state of the art in non-rigid structure from motion. This dissertation presents our contributions in the field of non-rigid structure from motion, detailing a novel algorithm that enforces the exact metric structure of the problem at each step of the minimisation by projecting the motion matrices onto the correct deformable or articulated metric motion manifolds respectively. An important advantage of this new algorithm is its ability to handle missing data which becomes crucial when dealing with real video sequences. We present a generic bilinear estimation framework, which improves convergence and makes use of the manifold constraints. Finally, we demonstrate a sequential, frame-by-frame estimation algorithm, which provides a 3D model and camera parameters for each video frame, while simultaneously building a model of object deformations.
