Book excerpt: The Jules Verne Collection includes five novels; Around the World in 80 Days, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, From the Earth to the Moon, and Around the Moon. This set is limited to 1,000 copies. In Around the World in 80 Days, Jules Verne helped make the world seem a little smaller, and accessible to young adventurers, spurring many to attempt a voyage around the world. In 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the description of Nemo's ship, called the Nautilus, was considered ahead of its time, as it accurately describes features on submarines, which at the time were very primitive vessels. In Journey to the Center of the Earth, readers were brought face to face with prehistoric creatures deep within the bowels of the Earth. In From the Earth to the Moon, many of Verne's calculations in launching a projectile into space were surprisingly accurate, and his placement of a launch site in Florida predated the Kennedy Space Center's construction in Florida by almost 100 years. In Around the Moon, Verne describes how the gravitational force of a large asteroid can change the course of a space ship, and encouraged readers to dream about the wonders of the Moon's surface.

Book excerpt: Around the World in Eighty Days (French: Le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours) is a classic adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, published in 1873. In the story, Phileas Fogg of London and his newly employed French valet Passepartout attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days on a £20,000 wager (roughly £1.6 million today) set by his friends at the Reform Club. It is one of Verne's most acclaimed works. The story starts in London on Tuesday, October 1, 1872. Fogg is a rich English gentleman living in solitude. Despite his wealth, Fogg lives a modest life with habits carried out with mathematical precision. Very little can be said about his social life other than that he is a member of the Reform Club. Having dismissed his former valet, James Foster, for bringing him shaving water at 84 °F (29 °C) instead of 86 °F (30 °C), Fogg hires a Frenchman by the name of Jean Passepartout as a replacement. At the Reform Club, Fogg gets involved in an argument over an article in The Daily Telegraph stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. He accepts a wager for £20,000 (equal to about £1.6 million today) from his fellow club members, which he will receive if he makes it around the world in 80 days. Accompanied by Passepartout, he leaves London by train at 8:45 P.M. on Wednesday, October 2, 1872, and is due back at the Reform Club at the same time 80 days later, Saturday, December 21, 1872.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth is a classic tale of adventure, discovery, and scientific curiosity. Written in 1864, the story takes readers on an unforgettable journey through mysterious caverns, subterranean lakes, and prehistoric landscapes as Professor Lidenbrock, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans descend into the Earth's depths, guided only by an ancient manuscript. Jules Verne, often regarded as the "father of science fiction," was a visionary French author whose works have inspired generations of writers and explorers. His ability to blend scientific facts with imaginative storytelling set a precedent for the genre, making his novels not only thrilling adventures but also thought-provoking reflections on human progress and the unknown. Alongside his more famous works such as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days, Journey to the Center of the Earth remains one of his most beloved novels. This translation aims to bring Verne’s timeless story to modern audiences by preserving the essence of the original text while using clear, accessible English. While many older translations adhered to a more formal style that can feel distant to today’s readers, this version strives to maintain the excitement and vivid descriptions that make Verne’s work so compelling, without the archaic language. It invites both new readers and longtime fans to experience the thrilling journey with a fresh perspective, making it easier to immerse in the adventure and wonder that lie at the heart of Verne’s masterpiece.

Book excerpt: Around the World in Eighty Days, French Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours, travel adventure novel by French author Jules Verne, published serially in 1872 in Le Temps and in book form in 1873. The work tells the story of the unflappable Phileas Fogg's trip around the world, accompanied by his emotional valet, Passepartout, to win a bet. It was the most popular of Verne's Voyages extraordinaires series of novels. Phileas Fogg, a Londongentleman of meticulousand unchanging habits, hires as his valet Jean Passepartout, a Frenchman who has had a variety of jobs, including circusperformer, but now seeks a tranquil life. After reading in The Daily Telegraphthat a new railroad in India has made it theoretically possible to travel around the world in 80 days, Fogg bets his fellow members at the Reform Club that he will make that journey in 80 days or less; the wager is for the princely sum of £20,000 (half his fortune). Leaving that night, Fogg and a nonplussed Passepartout board a train bound for Dover and Calais to begin their journey. Shortly before Fogg's departure, someone resembling him had robbed a bank, and Fogg's sudden exit leads Scotland Yardto believe that he was the bank robber. Accordingly, a detective, Mr. Fix, is sent to Suez, in British-ruled Egypt, to await the steamer Mongolia, on which Fogg and Passepartout are traveling. Fix befriends Passpartout, and, after learning that they will take the steamer to Bombay, he buys a ticket and joins them. The Mongoliareaches Bombay before the arrival of an arrest warrant, however. During the few hours before their planned departure for Calcutta on the Great India Peninsula Railway, Passepartout visits a Hindutemple on Malabar Hill, unaware that Christians are forbidden to enter and that shoes are not to be worn inside. He is beaten by enraged priests and barely makes it to the train station on time.
