Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey to the Centre of the Earth has been consistently praised for its style and its vision of the world. It explores the prehistory of the globe, but can also be read as a psychological quest, for the journey itself is as important as arrival or discovery. Professor Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel travel across Iceland, and then down through an extinct crater towards a sunless sea where they enter a living past and are confronted with the origins of man. A classic of nineteenth-century French literature, the novel's distinctive combination of realism and Romanticism has marked figures as diverse as Sartre and Tournier, Mark Twain and Conan Doyle. This new translation of the complete text is faithful to the lyricism, verve, and humour of the original. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

There they encounter an ancient landscape filled with prehistoric animals and natural dangers. There is some discussion as to whether Verne really believed that such things might be found in the center, or whether he shared the alternate view, expressed by another character in the novel, that it was not so. As part of our mission to publish great works of literary fiction and nonfiction, Sheba Blake Publishing Corp. is extremely dedicated to bringing to the forefront the amazing works of long dead and truly talented authors.

Book excerpt: Journey to the Center of the Earth Jules Verne Translated by Frederick Amadeus Malleson. Journey to the Center of the Earth (French: Voyage au centre de la Terre, also translated under the titles A Journey to the Center of the Earth and A Journey to the Interior of the Earth) is an 1864 science fiction novel by Jules Verne. The story involves German professor Otto Lidenbrock who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the centre of the Earth. He, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans descend into the Icelandic volcano Snaefellsjokull, encountering many adventures, including prehistoric animals and natural hazards, before eventually coming to the surface again in southern Italy, at the Stromboli volcano. The story begins in May 1863, in the Lidenbrock house in Hamburg, Germany, with Professor Lidenbrock rushing home to peruse his latest purchase, an original runic manuscript of an Icelandic saga written by Snorri Sturluson (Snorre Tarleson in some versions of the story), "Heimskringla"; the chronicle of the Norwegian kings who ruled over Iceland. While looking through the book, Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel find a coded note written in runic script along with the name of a 16th-century Icelandic alchemist, Arne Saknussemm. (This was a first indication of Verne's love for cryptography. Coded, cryptic or incomplete messages as a plot device would continue to appear in many of his works and in each case Verne would go a long way to explain not only the code used but also the mechanisms used to retrieve the original text.) Lidenbrock and Axel transliterate the runic characters into Latin letters, revealing a message written in a seemingly bizarre code. Lidenbrock attempts a decipherment, deducing the message to be a kind of transposition cipher; but his results are as meaningless as the original."

ClarkeThe adventure begins when eccentric German Professor Otto Lindenbrock and his nephew Axel decipher a coded note written in runic script by a sixteenth-century Icelandic alchemist. The message sends Lindenbrock and Axel on a journey to Snæfellsjökull, Iceland, in search of an extinct volcano and a secret crater that they believe leads to the center of the earth. With with their guide, Hans Bjelke, they make a daring dive into the crater. The three travelers encounter all kinds of dangers and strange phenomena-from an underground world populated with fossils of prehistoric mammals and gigantic mushrooms to prehistoric fish and giant marine reptiles from the age of dinosaurs. Journey to the Center of the Earth is a dazzling display of science fiction adventure writing. Includes a detailed biographical note on the author's life.Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist, playwright, and poet who is best known for his enduring tales of adventure and discovery that include Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, and Around the World in Eighty Days. Verne's books about a variety of innovations and technological advancements-including the submarine, space travel, terrestrial flight and deep-sea exploration-years before they were practical realities, laid much of the foundation of modern science fiction. One of the most prolific, famous French novelists of all time, Verne has been the second most-translated author in the world since 1979, ranking between Agatha Christie and William Shakespeare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey to the Center of the Earth (French: Voyage au centre de la Terre), also translated with the variant titles A Journey to the Centre of the Earth and A Journey to the Interior of the Earth), is a classic science fiction novel by Jules Verne. It was first published in 1864, then reissued in 1867 with a moderately revised and expanded text. Professor Otto Lidenbrock is the tale's central figure, an eccentric German scientist who believes there are volcanic tubes that reach to the very center of the Earth. He, his nephew Axel, and their Icelandic guide Hans rappel into Iceland's celebrated inactive volcano Snæfellsjökull, then contend with many dangers, including cave-ins, subpolar tornadoes, an underground ocean, and living prehistoric monsters from the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras. (The 1867 revised text inserted additional prehistoric material in Chaps. 37-39.) Eventually the three explorers are spewed back to the surface by an active volcano, Stromboli, in southern Italy. The category of subterranean fiction existed well before Verne. However, his novel's distinction lay in its well-researched Victorian science and its inventive contribution to the science-fiction subgenre of time travel-Verne's innovation was the concept of a prehistoric realm still existing in the present world. Not surpisingly, Journey inspired many later authors. For example, Edgar Rice Burroughs explicitly acknowledged Verne's influence on his own Pellucidar series.
