Book excerpt: Plainchant is the oldest substantial body of music that has been preserved in any shape or form. It was first written down in Western Europe in the eighth to ninth centuries. Many thousands of chants have been sung at different times or places in a multitude of forms and styles, responding to the differing needs of the church through the ages. This book provides a clear and concise introduction, designed both for those to whom the subject is new and those who require a reference work for advanced study. It begins with an explanation of the liturgies that plainchant was designed to serve. It describes all the chief genres of chant, different types of liturgical book, and plainchant notations. After an exposition of early medieval theoretical writing on plainchant, Hiley provides a historical survey that traces the constantly changing nature of the repertory. He also discusses important musicians and centers of composition. Copiously illustrated with over 200 musical examples, this book highlights the diversity of practice and richness of the chant repertory in the Middle Ages. It will be an indispensable introduction and reference source on this important music for many years to come.

Book excerpt: "This book provides an in-depth guide to the Maynooth medieval manuscripts (some sixteen of them, plus fragments) with illustrations. The descriptions of the manuscripts include complete palaeographical and codicological details and full information on the contents of the manuscripts and their history as far as it is known. Some of the manuscripts are of particular importance, either for their texts or for their illustrations, which are of good quality, or in one case because of the particular circumstances in which it was made. This material has lain mostly unknown for up to two hundred years, and in most cases the works contained in the manuscripts have not hitherto been identified. For the first time, consideration is also given to the collection as a whole, and how its make-up may reflect the history and character of the institution where it was built up. In the absence of any one major donor whose interests might have dominated, the collection grew over decades mainly in the nineteenth century. It therefore reflects the tastes of a succession of senior members of the college plus a few donors"--Publisher description.

Book excerpt: This is the first of a four-volume collection of British heraldic arms, arranged alphabetically according to their designs and covering the period before 1530. Listed in this volume are entries from Anchor to Bend. This book will help readers to identify the arms that were widely displayed in the Middle Ages and which can now be found not only on tombs, monuments and seals, but also on textiles, manuscripts, metalwork, glass, wall paintings, and other medieval artefacts. The index allows even those without any specialist knowledge of the subject to discover the blazons of arms recorded for particular surnames in the medieval period. Produced specifically to enable readers to identify individual coats of arms, it is an invaluable reference for historians, antiquaries, archaeologists, genealogists and those dealing in and collecting medieval objects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a completely revised edition of the second volume of the New Oxford History of Music. In the last three decades there has been intense interest in the music of the Middle Ages and great advances in research have been made in facts as well as interpretation. Drawing on the work of leading British and American scholars, this volume presents an informed, up-to-date picture of a broadspectrum of music from the fourth century AD to 1300. Beginning with Christian chant in the Mediterranean, it continues through Latin (`Gregorian') chant, liturgical drama, medieval song, instrumental music, and early polyphony down to the monumental organa composed at the cathedral of Notre Dame inParis in the twelfth century. Over 200 musical examples help to illustrate the discussion of 1,000 years of rich and complex musical development. Contributors: John Stevens, Milos Velimirovic, Kenneth Levy, Richard Crocker, Susan Rankin, Christopher Page, Sarah Fuller, and Janet Knapp.

Our treasures are different in the sense that they are not only part and parcel of our heritage but also part of a living tradition, items from the past yet living objects of present scholarship." Thomas Kabdebo, Librarian, St. Patrick's College The library treasures of Saint Patrick's College, Maynooth, are a powerful cultural magnet, drawing visitors and scholars from Europe and further afield to its unique collections. Here the theology of past centuries is illuminated by the many collections acquired by the library, including those of the Hibernian Bible Society and Bishop Thomas Furlong. Its Special collections section focuses on books 'rich, rare and curious', including an 1876 Moose Cree New Testament and a 13th century manuscript of St. Augustine's De Pastoribus. The rich breadth and diversity of the library's collections covers early Gaelic manuscripts, 19th century pamphlets, architectural plans and drawings, and the famous Salamanca Archives, comprising a stunning 50,000 documents gathered by Irish colleges in Spain over 400 years. Lavishly illustrated throughout in colour and black-and-white, Maynooth Library Treasures celebrates this famous library through a series of fascinating and revealing essays, allowing the reader to discover and appreciate its many wonders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is unexpected in any era to find a woman writing a book on the art of warfare, but in the fifteenth century it was unbelievable. Not surprisingly, therefore, Christine de Pizan's The Book of Deeds of Arms and of Chivalry, written around 1410, has often been regarded with disdain. Many have assumed that Christine was simply copying or pilfering earlier military manuals. But, as Sumner Willard and Charity Cannon Willard show in this faithful English translation, The Book of Deeds of Arms and of Chivalry contains much that is original to Christine. As a military manual it tells us a great deal about the strategy, tactics, and technology of medieval warfare and is one of our most important sources for early gunpowder weapon technology. It also includes a fascinating discussion of Just War. Since the end of the fifteenth century, The Book of Deeds of Arms and of Chivalry has been available primarily through Antoine Vérard's imprint of 1488 or William Caxton's 1489 translation, The Book of the Order of Chivalry. Vérard even suggested that the work was his own translation of the Roman writer Vegetius, making no mention of Christine 's name. Caxton attributed the work to Christine, but it is impossible to identify the manuscript he used for his translation. Moreoever, both translations are inaccurate. The Willards correct these inaccuracies in a clear and easy-to-read translation, which they supplement with notes and an introduction that will greatly benefit students, scholars, and enthusiasts alike. Publication of this work should change our perception both of medieval warfare and of Christine de Pizan.
