Recovering this overlooked story within the West's long history of borrowing from the Islamic world, Darke sheds new light on Europe's buildings and offers rich insights into the possibilities of cultural exchange.

Book excerpt: The legal relationship between architects and clients suffers from two basic tensions that have been debated in several European countries. First, the market for design of buildings is not the exclusive domain of architects anymore. Other disciplines have gradually encroached on the architect's core activities. Many new forms of contract have been developed in the construction industry. These market models no longer fit the traditional design contract, departing from the idea that an architect designs a structure that is fit for its purpose and subsequently supervises the realization of the design by the building contractor. Second, designing buildings is a low yield/high risk endeavor. If the obligations of architects under the design contract are not performed well, they are exposed to severe liabilities which may cause serious financial problems. Detailed comparative research on design contracts shows that rule makers have difficulties in dealing with these two tensions. In Europe, considerable differences exist regarding the national rules that apply to the contractual relationship between architects and clients. Therefore, in this study, four regulation issues have been investigated that deal with establishing rules to govern the two tensions: market entry regulation, architect liability, limitation of architect liability, and professional liability insurance. In order to evaluate these regulation issues, a law and economics perspective is applied. The book will help to establish which combination of regulation options is likely to lead to more efficient outcomes. It provides insights in what is the best way to deal with the two tensions in the relationship between architects and clients, and it contributes to establishing a new design for European architect law.

European Women in Architecture and Design. 1918-2018”, and outdoor exhibition “Women’s Tale. A Reportage on Women Designers”. Exhibition catalogue 100 Works in 100 Years. European Women in Architecture and Design. 1918-2018 brings together a selection of some of the most significant and representative examples of European architecture and design created by 100 women from the end of the First World War up until today. The number of works is symbolic, as ‘one hundred’ could also mean ‘countless’ as in the Latin word centium. While, the number of authors –each work has a different author– derives from MoMoWo’s choice to represent many different creators, consequently popularising lesser known figures, too. It includes biographies of women architects, civil engineers, furniture and industrial designers, urban planners, interior and landscape designers. It represents the main trends and major ‘schools’ of architecture and design all over Europe. The biographical data covers education and training, professional histories, networks women have operated in, including informal societies, memberships in trade bodies and associations, their profile as international, national, local and regional designers, as well as looking at how women have promoted their work i.e. in exhibitions, publications, competition entries, etc. The catalogue entries are followed by thirteen thematic essays on women architects and designers and by the outdoor exhibition catalogue “Women’s Tale. A Reportage on Women Designers”, where photographs by ten finalists of the MoMoWo Photo competition are presented. Book excerpt: While European eclecticism is examined as a critical and experimental moment in western art history, little research has been conducted to provide an intellectual depth of field to the historicist pursuits of late Ottoman architects as they maneuvered through the nineteenth century?s vast inventory of available styles and embarked on a revivalist/Orientalist program they identified as the ?Ottoman Renaissance.? Ahmet A. Ersoy?s book examines the complex historicist discourse underlying this belated ?renaissance? through a close reading of a text conceived as the movement?s canonizing manifesto: the Usul-i Mi?mari-i ?Osmani [The Fundamentals of Ottoman Architecture] (Istanbul, 1873). In its translocal, cross-disciplinary scope, Ersoy?s work explores the creative ways in which the Ottoman authors straddled the art-historical mainstream and their new, self-orientalizing aesthetics of locality. The study reveals how Orientalism was embraced by its very objects, the self-styled ?Orientals? of the modern world, as a marker of authenticity, and a strategically located aesthetic tool to project universally recognizable images of cultural difference. Rejecting the lesser, subsidiary status ascribed to non-western Orientalisms, Ersoy?s work contributes to recent, post-Saidian directions in the study of cultural representation that resituate the field of Orientalism beyond its polaristic core, recognizing its cross-cultural potential as a polyvalent discourse.
