Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urartu is still less well known than it should be, despite the best efforts of many of the contributors to the current work. This edited collection of 21 chapters (all but one in English) written by a mixture of established and younger scholars, mainly from Turkey and Armenia but also from Western Europe and North America, offers a very broad coverage of Urartu and its principal sites. It may still leave unclear whether the Urartian state was centralised or decentralised, both (over time) or neither - probably there are as many opinions as contributors. There is not an over-arching narrative. Two chapters consider the state of Urartian studies, one examines Eastern Anatolia before Urartu; others look at Urartian history, economy, architecture, temples and sanctuaries, funerary architecture, pottery, iconography, and metalwork. 'International relations' and Urartian expansion, north, south and west, are the focus of the next three chapters. The final seven consider major Urartian sites: Erzincan/Altintepe Castle, the fortress of Ayanis, Bastam, Sardurihinili-Cavustepe, Erebuni/Arinberd, Karmir-Blur and Tushpa/Van Citadel. The aim has been to produce an in-depth introduction to most matters Urartian.

Book excerpt: This overview of current research on the Iron-Age kingdom of Urartu offers studies by thirty scholars who met at an international symposium at Munich University in October 2007. Biainili, as this polity was known to its inhabitants, dominated the mountainous region of what is now eastern Turkey, north-western Iran, and southern Armenia from the ninth to the seventh centuries BC and is distinguished by its unique language and material culture. It was a rival to the Neo-Assyrian Empire, which provides much of the evidence for its history as well as the name by which is best known, Urartu (Biblical Ararat). An introductory chapter giving a general account of the history and culture of the kingdom is followed by more focused contributions on numerous aspects of Urartian culture based on textual records and archaeological sources both from Urartu itself and from neighbouring regions. As the most substantial treatment of the subject to appear in the 21st century, this book brings to light recent research in all areas of the kingdom, considers revisions to traditional chronology from several viewpoints, and provides an extensive bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Socio-economic Organisation of the Urartian Kingdom, Ali Çifçi presents a detailed study of the life of the highland communities of eastern Anatolia, Armenia and north-west Iran between the 9th and 6th centuries BC. In doing so, the author uses archaeological excavations, surveys, and textual evidence from both Urartian and Assyrian sources, as well as original ethnographic observations, within the context of the geographical setting of the Urartu Kingdom. This book investigates various aspects of the Urartian Kingdom from its economic resources and the movement of commodities (agriculture, animal husbandry, metallurgy, trade, etc.) to the management of those resources and the administrative organisation of the state. This includes the Urartian concept of kingship and the king’s role in administration, construction, the division of the kingdom, as well as the income generated by warfare. "There are several key philological and archaeological works that propel the field of Urartian studies and provide dialogue partners for Urartologists and historians of Anatolia and the ancient Near East...Ali Çifçi’s The Socio-Economic Organisation of the Urartian Kingdom can be included as a partner in dialogue when researching Urartu and Iron Age Anatolian archaeology..." Selim Ferruh Adalı, Social Sciences University of Ankara, in Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2018.07.22.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urartians recorded the volumes of jugs, jars and storerooms, using a variety of symbols and words. In this book mathematical and statistical models, both geometric and digital, are examined for evaluating the ratio of the different measures of volume to each other and for finding absolute values for these measures. The presence of full mathematical calculations allows for controls to be made and removes the faith element from this branch of Urartian studies. In doing so, it also provides quantitative techniques that can be used in related archaeological ventures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of twenty-eight essays presents an up-to-date survey of pre-Islamic Iran, from the earliest dynasty of Illam to the end of Sasanian empire, encompassing a rich diversity of peoples and cultures. Historically, Iran served as a bridge between the earlier Near Eastern cultures and the later classical world of the Mediterranean, and had a profound influence on political, military, economic, and cultural aspects of the ancient world. Written by international scholars and drawing mainly on the field of practical archaeology, which traditionally has shared little in the way of theories and methods, the book provides crucial pieces to the puzzle of the national identity of Iranian cultures from a historical perspective. Revealing the wealth and splendor of ancient Iranian society – its rich archaeological data and sophisticated artistic craftsmanship – most of which has never before been presented outside of Iran, this beautifully illustrated book presents a range of studies addressing specific aspects of Iranian archaeology to show why the artistic masterpieces of ancient Iranians rank among the finest ever produced. Together, the authors analyze how archaeology can inform us about our cultural past, and what remains to still be discovered in this important region.

Book excerpt: With contributions spanning from the Neolithic Age to the Iron Age, this book offers important insights into the religions and ritual practices in ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern communities through the lenses of their material remains. The book begins with a theoretical introduction to the concept of material religion and features editor introductions to each of its six parts, which tackle the following themes: the human body; religious architecture; the written word; sacred images; the spirituality of animals; and the sacred role of the landscape. Illustrated with over 100 images, chapters provide insight into every element of religion and materiality, from the largest building to the smallest amulet. This is a benchmark work for further studies on material religion in the ancient Near East and Egypt.

Book excerpt: First mentioned in Assyrian documents of the 13th century, the Urartians commanded a large kingdom stretching from the Euphrates in the west to Transcaucasia in the north and the Taurus mountains in the south. This book accompanies an exhibition held in 2003 and 2004 at Yapi Kredi Vedat Nedim Tor Museum, covering the history, art, architecture and religion of Urartian culture. Eight dual-language essays in Turkish and English discuss Urartian language and writing, the history of the kingdom, its topography, the capital of Tuspha and its architectural legacy, through to the apparent violent destruction of many sites around the 7th century. These are followed by a large catalogue of objects from the exhibition including those relating to daily life, jewellery and ornaments, the army and warfare, religion and belief.
