This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the time of Columbus, explorers dreamed of a water passage across the North American continent. President Thomas Jefferson shared this dream. He conceived the Corps of Discovery to travel up the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains and westward along possible river routes to the Pacific Ocean. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led this expedition of 1804?6. Along the way they filled hundreds of notebook pages with observations of the geography, Indian tribes, and natural history of the trans-Mississippi West. This volume covers the last leg of the party's route from the Cascades of the Columbia River to the Pacific Coast, and their stay at Fort Clatsop, near the river's mouth, until the spring of 1806. Travel and exploration were hampered by miserable weather. While in winter quarters, Lewis wrote detailed reports on natural phenomena and Indian life. These descriptions were accompanied by sketches of plants and animals as well as of Indians and their canoes, tools, and clothing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beach of Heaven is a history of the earliest settled areas in Washington. Birthplace of the state's canned salmon industry and cooperative extension movement, Wahkiakum County has a historic significance extending beyond its borders. Today it stands at the cusp of change as the rural occupations of fishing, farming, and logging, upon which the county has depended, suffer from outside influences and demographic shifts.
Book Synopsis The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition: November 2, 1805-March 22, 1806 by : Gary E. Moulton

This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first five volumes of the new edition of the Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition have been widely heralded as a lasting achievement in the study of western exploration. The sixth volume begins on November 2, 1805, in the second year of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark’s epic journey. It covers the last leg of the party’s route from the Cascades of the Columbia River to the Pacific Coast and their stay at Fort Clatsop, near the river’s mouth, until the spring of 1806. Travel and exploration, described in the early part, were hampered by miserable weather, and the enforced idleness in winter quarters permitted detailed record keeping. The journals portray the party’s interaction with the Indians of the lower Columbia River and the coast, particularly the Chinooks, Clatsops, Wahkiakums, Cathlamets, and Tillamooks. No other volume in this edition has such a wealth of ethnographic and natural history materials, most of it apparently written by Lewis and copied by Clark, and accompanied by sketches of plants, animals, and Indians and their canoes, implements, and clothing. Incorporating a wide range of new scholarship dealing with all aspects of the expedition, from Indian languages to plants and animals to geographical and historical contexts, this new edition expands and updates the annotation of the last edition, published early in the twentieth century.

These volumes give them 6 practice tests, of half an hour each progressing in difficulty through the book. Children then mark their own tests from the answers, to find out their Level of performance. Compared with the competition from Letts, these have less marking advice to the parents, and hence more practice material for the children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Test excavations were conducted at prehistoric site 45WT134, Whitman County, Washington, by Archaeological and Historical Services, Eastern Washington University. The site is located along the Snake River on lands administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District. Excavation focused on the determination of site extent, content, and research potential pursuant to eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Results of testing indicate a Tucannon phase occupation. There is evidence for intact living surfaces, which suggests that activity area analyses might be applicable in future, more extensive, excavations. While there is some evidence for housepits at 45WT134, testing did not incontrovertably demonstrate them to be present. Because the Tucannon phase has not been extensively documented and because the site seems to be amenable to several forms of analysis, 45WT134 is recommended as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. It is further recommended that the site be monitored for on-going erosion and that data recovery or river bank stabilization be implemented if necessary.
